The Liahona Network

Got an email today that said "To align with direction regarding the correct use of the name of the Church, the wireless
network in meetinghouses and other Church facilities will be changing from “LDSAccess” to "Liahona" and the password is Alma3738.

Alma 37:38
"And now, my son, I have somewhat to say concerning the thing which our fathers call a ball, or director—or our fathers called it Liahona, which is, being interpreted, a compass; and the Lord prepared it."

Goes to illustrate that it’s not enough just to stop using “Mormon” as a nickname for the Church. We shouldn’t be using abbreviations either, as in “LDS Church,” or, as I’ve seen on here from time to time,

“COJCOLDS.”

In short, anything that supplants the name of Christ in the name of His Church — be it a nickname or an abbreviation — is inappropriate.

So many online sites and businesses that use LDS or Mormon in their name (like mine).  How should they handle that when any other possible names have been taken?

If it is not referring to the Church, you don't need to change it or so we were told at FairMormon.

I think the password is "alma3738" with no capital "A".

I am going to be popular this Sunday as everyone complains their phones and tablets are not working. ;)

Would it be wrong to say we cannot tell them until after Sacrament Meeting? :vader:

Here's the letter. You won't be too popular yet. It says we have till April 15 to make the change and you are right it is "alma3738".

Pity it isn't the first of April.  It would have been so perfect especially if Sunday was the first.

Yeh, but does this now mean that members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints can be called "Liahonas" for short, instead of that now hated name which shall not be used, and which we should shudder to utter?

The "Liahona connection," kind of like the Rainbow connection:

It's funny--and telling--that they use the liahona symbology in connection with the internet, since I would say the liahona is pretty much a 'device'.

Anybody try out the new connection today? I did just before sacrament meeting. It works.

The old LDS Access will still be functional for a few weeks, but best to get your devices changed over now.

The password is case sensitive, so don’t capitalize “alma” in the password.

In keeping with the Church’s move to discontinue the “LDS” abbreviation, I expect LDS Business College will change its name eventually. Anyone know of anything happening in that respect?

Being purely speculative here, but they could change the name to BYU-Salt Lake City as they did when Ricks College became BYU-Idaho and Church College of Hawaii became BYU-Hawaii. The current BYU Salt Lake Center could simultaneously be merged with the business college. They already operate out of the same building, the Triad Center in downtown Salt Lake.

Another possibility: LDS Business College could be enfolded into the BYU-I Pathways International.

I hooked up today too. How about BYU Business college? I think the name needs to somehow be associated with the Church.

The really important aspect of this wireless network change is that it requires that users accept the terms of use each day that they wish to access the network.  This will prevent members' devices from automatically joining the network everytime they walk into a building thereby lowering the bandwidth for all.

Our Bishop and Clerk offices are just across the hall from the chapel.  When another ward is in the chapel (we have four wards in our building), we have to use our mobile phones as hotspots for our laptops and tablets and even the desktop computer in the clerk's office.  I think this change will help alleviate that problem.

I thought of that too, but I’m afraid it would be too confusing. Don’t the existing BYU campuses have their own business departments, MBA programs, etc.?

Yeah.

I’m an assistant ward clerk. Last year we had frequent problems with being dumped off line or not being able to access the Church website on Sundays after the meeting block to perform essential functions such as expense reimbursements, printing out tithing settlement statements, etc. We guessed that this was due to the single-adult ward meeting in our building at the same time and all those free-wheeling singles accessing the internet with their phones and tablets, thereby using up the band width.

This year, the single-adult ward has been moved to another building, and we haven’t had the problem so much.

It never occurred to us to use a mobile phone hot spot. But ward officers shouldn’t be having to do that anyway.

We put the new information in our bulletin, so I guess we'll see who actually reads the announcements here in the near future.

It also worked for me in Nebraska. The technological implementation of remote management for literally 10,000's of devices getting the setting pushed remotely is, to me, a pretty impressive technical feat (even if conceptually/in theory it wouldn't be that difficult to do).

Yep... based on the reports here, it seems to have been a glitch-free roll out.  Pretty impressive!

I'm curious if this change also applied to facilities outside of North America.  I have no idea if they have/had the same "LDSAccess" wifi that we all had here.
