It's a documentary that follows the Navarro college cheer squad as they prepare for nationals in Daytona.  It's very good.  Not only is it interesting but it's incredibly touching.  And despite being rated MA, I only heard one F that I noticed, over the course of 6 episodes.  I highly recommend it. :)

My daughter was head cheerleader in high school and later in college, and I know how hard they worked. It made me mad at one high school game once when the crowd barely cheered for cheerleaders' halftime performance but were over the top for the drill team. I'll check it out for sure!

I'm still trying.  I've only made it to the second episode.  My biggest struggle is that I don't really like political thriller type shows, and so far that's the biggest vibe I've gotten from this show.  Does it start to focus more on the religious side of things soon?

Understandable. I happen to LOVE political thrillers so it's right up my alley.

The interactions of the messianic figure and other characters are sprinkled throughout the series. There really isn't much by way of preaching of theology or anything like that. In a very real sense the religious and non-religious characters are all political in their own ways ;)

Don't force yourself to like it. It's not for everybody. Different tastes and all of that.

But I think that's part of what is fascinating. This messiah's emergence doesn't really fit the Mormon version, or the evangelical version, or the Jewish version, or the muslim version of what would be expected of a Messiah. So everyone has to grapple with how he doesn't quite meet their expectations. I suspect it was similar in Jesus' day.

Your take on "Messiah" is well articulated, I agree that the show was very well done.....My wife and I continue to discuss different aspects of the wonder, awe and human reactions to the "Messiah character".  I do think that most of the story would fit in the category of "biblical".....the end of Matthew talks about false Messiahs and deceivers.

22 “If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened. 23 At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah!’ or, ‘There he is!’ do not believe it. 24 For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. 25 See, I have told you ahead of time.

Yeah. Good point.

Do you (or anyone) know if there are similar warnings in the Torah that Jewish leaders in Jesus' time would have used to dissuade people from following Jesus?

I'll have to watch it.  Hubby and I started watching some sitcom from the late 1990s that takes place in Scotland and is about two old widowers.  It's hilarious but the funniest part is that I can't understand 3/4 of what they say, even though they are speaking English!

A few months ago there were two repairmen in our flat at the same time. They began chatting with each other and both quickly switched to a heavy Scottish dialect. I just sat on the couch and enjoyed listening to them! :D

I finished it last night. They did manage to work one silly love scene into the series, but it was brief.

No Spoilers: but it ends with many unanswered questions and great possibilities for a 2nd season.

I watched it, too, found it interesting, especially the interpersonal impact on individual characters as they try to figure out what he means to them.

Not a Jewish article, but the author is an excellent historian in my view and covers some of what Jews were expecting and why:

I had to give up on the Expanse for this new season.  I'm tired of the random F words and sex scenes that come out of no where.

Me too.

I admittedly did not read all the posts (I only have so much time to goof off at work) but I do like the series. I'm about halfway through. Like others have said this is one of those shows I have to pay attention to, no multitasking. That's partly because of the subtitles when people are speaking Arabic, Hebrew or some other language but also partly because it's easy to miss little details. FWIW, while it never explicitly states (at least not so far) what religion al-Masih is, it is implied or assumed he is Muslim. In the episode where he is sort of asked, he doesn't say - very Jesus like.

The end of Matthew points to the end times prophecies, Zecharia chapter 14, and the 70th week of Daniel are OT places to look for the end-times prophecies...... as well as the NT book of Revelation.

Yet the more we learn about his background, we see he has many types of close ties to Israel and also to North America.

Found the show interesting, there's evidence for and against him being the actual Messiah (though totally not scripturally speaking, but if someone wasn't knowledgable of the scriptures, or a surface understanding, it might be compelling).
He might be more of an "anti-christ" figure if they start going the Evanglical understanding of a latter-day false messiah.

I'm curious where they go with it.  Good entertainment either way.
