Annoying and a waste of time, but polite.  I just think there are much more important issues to focus on, we only have a finite amount of time each day.  To even focus on this issue with all the other problems we have in this world is an unfortunate misappropriation from my perspective.

A two minute email in an attempt to promote the Church as commanded by the Lord hardly seems like a waste of time.

especially since you've spent more time arguing against it than just doing it

Only it makes us come across as pricks if massive amounts of people are correcting and judging others over something so trivial.  Why not spend our efforts doing good in the community and building positively.  If we want to me known for our fruits I think we shouldn't be worried about how other people refer to us, instead lets focus our efforts on actually doing good in this world.

Except it's not trivial. Not in the least

Ha, well, that makes sense coming from the sarcasm king.

But in all seriousness, Jesus just did good, he wasn't concerned with getting accolades or credit for the good he did.  Thats what the gospel is all about, its about serving and loving without getting the credit for it.

Jesus specifically commanded us to put our light on a hill

In the last hour, Rush Limbaugh mentioned the Mormon church praising us for our family history work and facilities.

i wrote him an email asking him if he would be willing to correct the name of the Church. I wanted to encourage others to do likewise.

I think an email thanking him for the positive he said about the church would be better to do (just my opinion).  You could use the correct name of the church in the email and it wouldn't come off as you being critical.

But no, I wouldn't do what you are suggesting and my impression of Rush Limbaugh is that it would backfire (he doesn't appear to be one who likes to be corrected :) )

this isn’t meant to get political. If it’s does please close the thread

I'm confused.  Are we trying to get people to not like us now?  Is it like reverse psychology or something?

And then you criticized him or corrected him.  Do as you wish.....but I personally don't agree with this approach and believe most won't react positively to it.

Wow, maybe an unintended consequence of President Nelson's efforts is that the language police personality types in the church are now emboldened to go forth and fight the good fight.  I just can't see how this is an important priority for the gospel message.

I watched another Conference address many years ago. This has long been a pet project of then Elder Nelson, so now President Nelson who can finally make it seem as if it were a revelation from heaven ( although he made no claim of it being a "Revelation"). But the revelation from heaven came (I believe) in 1836, to the Prophet Joseph Smith, changing the name of the Church to the longer form, to "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints". As stated before by him and by others, the name is not, nor has it ever been called the "Mormon Church", despite the many every single President (or Prophet) referring to it as so, from time to time, and saying otherwise using the name Mormon, in books, movies and other media for almost 200 years. He is the President, he may do what he likes, but most things are administrative, and not revelatory.

No. I asked him if he would be willing to use the full name of the Church

He made it pretty clear this was not his pet project but that it is the will of God. He didn’t exactly goosestep around with his instructions.

How about taking time and energy to express your annoyance and scold people about it on a message board?  Isn’t that a misappropriation in and of itself?

I tried to submit the following:

Hi Rush,
Thank you for your recent complimentary comments about the efforts of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. You probably do not know that the Church recently has commented on its common nickname. Over the course of its history Protestants began to refer to the Church as Mormons. Over time this has caused us to become known as the Mormon Church. We feel this offensive to our Savior who wishes the Church to be called in His name. We realize that this will take time to percolate through the various aspects of the media and social media, but in an effort to effectuate this change, we appreciate the efforts of everyone in the media to refer to the Church as The Church of Jesus Christ. The Church will appreciate your individual efforts in this regard.
Sincerely,
BC, Member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints

When I hit submit, nothing seemed to happen. I hit it numerous times... If it did send, he is going to get inundated...

feel free to comment on the appropriateness or inappropriateness of my comments. To some extent I feel  a bit strange making this request  in an unofficial capacity.

I sent one as well:

Hi Rush,

I admittedly despise you and everything you stand for but I appreciate your recent compliment towards the Mormon Church. However, it is not the Mormon church. We are rebranding as The Church of Cheese and Rice of Rattle-Day Snakes. We hope this change in emphasis towards the real object of our worship will be honored by you and other dishonorable members of the media everywhere.

Hugs and Kisses,

The Nehor

P.S. The Danites are completely real and will be dispatched to deal with any concerns you express about this request at the first sign of defiance. Have a pleasant day.

Yes, I heard him say it, but he spoken on this issues more than once in the past. I love they guy, I will "follow the Prophet", to coin a phrase. But he has over the years spoke of this, almost to a quote. What are we suppose to, that every other President and Prophet have been in error, via books, songs, movies, and the like using the name "Mormon", were "not" following God's will. As I said, the revelation given for the name the Church bares, was given to Joseph Smith, this is nothing new. All that is new now the speed at which changes are made, will little to no warning to the rank and file of the Church, including Stake Presidents and Bishops.

That is what we mean by not garnishing the sepulchres of dead prophets. This is a new step forward. What was right in the past is not right now. It is not a condemnation of past prophets. We have continuing revelation. The current leadership should not be constrained by what past leadership has said. God wants something else now.

If you are going to insist on correctness, especially in communicating with media professionals, you probably should take pains to write the name of the in the correct style. Note the hyphen and lower case d in “Latter-day” to wit: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Furthermore, in the interest of transparency, I think you need to make it claearer that you are writing in an unofficial capacity.

Wow, is it just me, or are you just not as kind as you once were? Prophets, "present" stand on the scriptures and the shoulders of Prophets past, in fact the very keys under which they operate were passed down by those Prophets and Apostles of the past. No one is talking about constraining President Nelson, just trying to give context to his current comments. Even Jesus Christ, along with Apostles quoted the Prophets of old, as do all of ours. Thankfully "they" are not as dismissive of their predecessors as your comment suggested. So, again, "is it me" that brings this out in you?

I did not say they were dismissive. I am sure they took into account the past statements on the subject. They made the decision via revelation to make the change.

So,e are resisting the change by pitting the words of past prophets against the current one. We have been warned repeatedly not to do that. If pointing out that people are doing it anyway is mean then I guess I am mean.

I am not resisting, and I don't usually refer to myself as a "Mormon", unless every other avenue fails. I have been doing this for decades, as Phrophets have been giving this same counsel. The odd thing is while doing so, they were not following their own advice, via the examples I already used. Not too long ago the movie, "Meet the Mormons", made it's way across the Nation (again), people were thrilled, many were, very, very close friends, who now talking "how it is about time to stop using the word Mormon". I was not suggesting you are mean by saying it, just some comments in our last thread, and in this one seem harsh. After 12 years on this site, as of late you and I seem to be at odds. I can disagree (most of the time) without being disagreeable. However, I have experienced some very sad losses over the last week, so maybe my skin is very thin. Anyway, Love ya Brother.
