The two prophetic founders of the Knights of the Crystal Blade, John Coltharp and Samuel Shaffer (both about age 35), have been sentenced to 25/26 years to life in State prison for child rape and sodomy (girls aged 8 and 9). These guys are insane. If and when they are released in their 60s, I believe that they will immediately reoffend. 1

However, they probably really belong in the Utah State Mental Hospital up at the end of Center St in Provo. The state hospital isn't really set up for long term prisoners. It's security isn't great either. If you remember Cody Judy who held up some of us at the Marriott Center with a purported bomb managed to escape from there. The vast majority are part of the regular hospital, which means they’re there on a more long-term basis (than a typical psychiatric hospital), due to needing longer care than other facilities provide. A smaller component is the actual forensic unit where, mostly, people are sent there by the courts because they are deemed not competent to proceed, and are there to be restored to competency. This could be for many non-violent crimes, and just that they are not deemed competent to have the law applied yet.

Other parts of the facility are very low security, and they even allow patients to go on "liberty" into downtown Provo. Mental health runs the gamut there.

The security doesn't look terribly strong. And, as I said, Cody Judy managed to escape.

If those 2 ' gentlemen ' were to get shived during incarceration , would there be a part of us that would shrug and think..." Oh dear, how sad... next problem..." ? If society thinks those guys deserve death or at least a good lashing, it ought to demand it of the legal system.
