Haha! How is Texas doing Darren?

Thank you for asking. Back to normal pretty much. I’m sure though there are many homes still needing repairs.

Go Astros! :)

(Right Happy Jack Wagon?!  Come on!  I know that's why you started the thread!  Just admit it! Huh, huh, huh!  I'm right, aren't I?!  Huh, huh, huh! :aggressive: )

:)

BTW - Is there a back story to all of this? I have not been able to read and post here for a while.

What, you mean that posting here takes a distant back seat to making sure that half of the population of Texas doesn't drown?!  What's up with that?!  You need to reorient your priorities, Son! ;):D  (Seriously, I hope you and yours are doing as well as can be expected, given the circumstances.  I do wish you well.)  As for the back story illuminating why I have posted what I have on this thread, see here: http://www.mormondialogue.org/topic/69719-the-next-time-a-critic-gripes-re-churchs-business-interests-quote-quinn/?page=6&tab=comments#comment-1209767397.

Thank you for the well wishes. Actually, not being able to come here is due to working two jobs, not recoviering from the flooding. To that latter end, things are pretty much back to normal except that the Astros last night won 13-12 at the bottom of the 10th! I’m excited and I don’t even follow professional sports but I do provide rides to people to and from the games.

Thanks for the back story and sorry for tour pet maggot. ;)

Is Erik or Five solas? They both seem to want ot antagonize the LDS faithful.

P.S.: No comment, Jappy Hack Wagon?  Cat got yer tongue? :P

Why would this thread be about you? You are either feeling guilty about something or are just generally overconfident about the time you spend in other people's heads ;)

Sorry, but I had a weekend free of the internet.

No, what you really want is for people to agree with your assessment of me.  The judgment you've got your britches in a bunch about has been made after years interacting with that poster and of watching him interact with others on the board.  I know that, to quote M*A*S*H's Radar O'Reilly, gives you hyperacididity.  Try this.  You're welcome.  Hope it helps.

I honestly have no clue why you seem to think this is about you. I have no gripe with you but you are starting to come off as a little self-important ;)

Ahh, so I'm just crazy,  and the impression that previous dialogue in which I was involved had something to do with the starting of this thread is all in my head, is it?  Oh.  OK. :unsure: (I'll add that kind of dismissal to the seemingly ever-growing list of ways in which you disrespect your interlocutors with whom you disagree.)  Since you're utterly bewildered what I'm talking about, see my reply to Darren10, and the link therein to an earlier thread.

Didn't you participate quite extensively in the thread awhile back (I think it was started by Johnnie Cake) about how, allegedly, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and its leaders gaslight members?  Why do I have the sneaking suspicion that someone's trying to gaslight me here?  Gaslighting is wrong for the Church of Jesus Christ (accepting solely for the sake of argument that it even engages in it) but it's A-OK for you?  I can't help it if one of us has a longer memory than you do the other of us does.

Ah...I'd say thanks (for the thread reference), except you're priggish responses don't deserve the gratitude. I had forgotten. My memory is terrible, just ask my kids ;)

While the rudeness I must have noticed on that thread likely played a subliminal role in starting this thread, it certainly wasn't the impetus. I think I made a couple of comments on that entire thread (my last comment being over a week ago) so it wasn't really top of mind.

In any case, I will say that rudeness like you're exhibiting now, is a bad fruit IMO. I never said you were crazy so don't put words into my mouth. Were you one of the many who were offended by use of the term "gaslighting"? I personally think the term fits in many circumstances (this isn't one of them), but I find it interesting that someone who finds it offensive would use it. I suppose it's just another example of intentional rudeness. I don't find intentional rudeness to be a very good fruit.

Of course not!  Why should I expect anything better than that from you?  (Call out other members for their alleged "rudeness," but let them suggest that perhaps you might want to look in the mirror, and they're "priggish."  Gotcha.  I'll be wary of attempting anything approaching good-faith dialogue with you henceforth.)

Of course not!  Why bother stating something outright when insinuation and innuendo will work just as well, and you can simply throw out one of these ( ) as the heads turn someone points a finger and attempts to call you out on it.

Have a great day, Jappy Hack Wagon.

IF this dialogue is your best attempt at a "good-faith dialogue" then you are probably right to abandon that effort.

I noticed that one of the tags you put on this thread was "Judgmentalism." Was that a reference to your motivation, or to a problem you appear to perceive only in others?

You seem to have a penchant for insinuation, kiwi57.  Those with whom you disagree must be hypocrites.  I don't know that there are enough data points to declare a pattern--but readers might keep it in mind going forward.

You're welcome.

It's a problem I perceive, but NOT only in others.

Must they? I hadn't noticed.

IOW, you want to plant your insinuation - based upon a bit of tendentious cherry-picking - in the minds of readers so that they will treat anything I post with suspicion.

I believe this is called "poisoning the well."

The fruits of the gospel are good.  No doubt about it.  It is difficult to always see this in individuals.  But consider the fact that studies have shown that active members of the church live longer than the average person in the society at large.  For women- it is a 5 year difference.  For men, it is almost a 10 year difference.   That is pretty impressive.

http://www.belnapfamily.org/brentjbelnap/institute/Preventive_Medicine_2008_Lifestyle_and_Mormon_Mortality_Enstrom.pdf

Then you have the U PENN study showing that members of the church give more time and money to charity.  Maybe that is the best fruit.

I'd say it falls in the tasteless range.  Some good, some bad.  I find that typical among members generally too.  In most wards I've been in the talk has been that they feel they are above most of the world (a distinct we're in the world but not of it mentality), but on average I'd say members are no better or worse than most others.  I think the fruits of this board bear that out.

I'd say it's all good.  "All things work together for good" kind of good.  I'd say the people in the Church, for the most part, as the people on this board are sincere good hearted people.  We are all learning how to communicate with kindness.  Sometimes we do okay, sometimes not so much.  But we are learning and getting better I think.  I learn something from everybody here, even when I'm on a different wavelength than they are.  I say things I regret.  I get a like every now and then, which is encouraging.  If this board weren't a good place to be, I doubt I doubt HappyJack, Bernard Gui, Calm, Stemelbow, Kenngo or the rest of you cool people would stick around.  I don't think I would either.  But there does seem to be a very sweet sociality here over all.  That's my opinion.  Hey, has anyone heard how Bill "Papa" Lee is doing?  He needs our prayers, last I heard.

If one were to experiment on the word and judge the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints based on the fruits it bears as evidenced on this message board, what results do you feel that experiment would yield? Would the fruit seem good, evil, or tasteless?

The answer would depend on whether you (assuming you are exalted) or Heavenly Father (a man who is believed to
have become a God and Heavenly Father of Earth) believe that accepting worship from your own spirit children is evil.

Er, Jim?

What's that got to do with the OP?

If we judge by the fruits of the people on this board I would say it is quite the mixed fruit salad

Some reliable crisp red apples
Some sour grapes
Some rotten bananas
A few nuts. Are they a fruit?
Tomatos. Try to fit in as a fruit but can't be accepted as such
Nectarines - Sweet and delicious on the inside, but hard as a rock on the outside.
Pineapples - Looks intimidating and dangerous, but is actually really sweet.
Pumpkins - Makes a big impression but pretty much empty on the inside
Which fruit are you?

I am definitely a tomato.  I don't fit in no matter how hard I try.

Though the tomato is the least of the fruits, pretending to be more a vegetable, I am guessing that many see me as the biggest fruit on the board.  Oh the irony.
