My own Mormon experience prepared me for Aleister Crowley, and it was a very smooth transition. And I'm not by any measure the only one. O.T.O. membership is disproportionately Mormon raised, and we deserve a place on that threat Power Point. Crowley was a venal man who tried to make his venality more sophisticated by dressing it up in a caricature of hermetic magic and pseudosophistication. 1 hour ago, Tsuzuki said: We are growing.

But regardless, Thelema is less about Crowley than Mormonism is about Smith. I dabbled in occultism and satanism and hermetic magic when I was younger and sought the mysteries of the universe and raw power. There is nothing there. No pure joy, no enlightenment, and not even raw power. I found a lot of mumble-jumbo designed to sound profound to someone under the effects of mind-altering substances. The one time I am convinced I did commune with some kind of spirit or demon and saw what should have been called a miracle or magic or whatever was strange. I do not even believe anything supernatural physically happened. It was more like an illusion and my mind was dulled and dumbed under the influence of what I was doing that it was banal and just felt like a bad dream. The modern versions of magic and occultism that insist that a true magician never uses or needs magic are particularly contemptible. Why study something in order not to use it? It is almost as if they throw the term magic around to make themselves sound mystical without actually having to do anything. If magic worked or occultism offered knowledge I would be all over it. I would be a deranged crank (well, more of a deranged crank) about it. It sadly doesn't. An average prayer thrills me with spiritual power and gives me the recharge I need during the day while days poring over dry books and pseudomystical pseudophilosophy never gave me anything....except maybe the false thrill of pretending to be Gandalf.

I have no idea how much modern occultism is about Mr. Crowley (and, frankly, I couldn't care less), but I'm pretty sure that if Mormonism were more about Joseph Smith, then those who killed him would have been successful in their attempts to kill the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints along with him. I know what I naturally project on it but I recognize I may not be correct. Is there anything you can share based on how individuals in your orders view it. Is the traditional view of Lutheranism accurate or do you feel misrepresented?

Did cinepro name the thread this to be cheeky or is this the actual title of the powerpoint? I came up with the title when I was happily surprised to find that there were actually 17 bubbles. 1
