"Sometimes incredible stories are actually true, and in this case, experts agree that a small onyx stone, claimed to be given to a Knight Templar over 1,000 years ago and handed down through one family from generation to generation, is actually what the present owner claims: a gem from the breastplate of the High Priest in Jerusalem."

I think its not allowed to post links without some sort of discussion topic. So I'll add that even though I'm highly skeptical about this discovery and Dr. James Strange's (nice name bro) assessment, I do find it interesting that several commenters mention Joseph Smith and his seerstones.

Breakingisraelnews.com ?

Color me skeptical. I admit I find it funny how the most credulous news sites always try to make it sound like they are skeptical and then amazed.

Not that its much better, but the Daily Mail has also run the story.

I know Dr Strange, and believe him to be a fully credible and reliable source.

Perhaps I should call him and get his take on this story, although I thought he was long retired. He's got to be in his eighties now if he is still alive, which appears to be the case.

BTW the story related to him, which is somewhat dubious is that the stone was from the Breast plate of Aaron. I don't believe any rabbi in Israel at that time would have had the priceless gold breast plate of Aaron - much less rip it apart for some crusader. Even if so, tho those stones in the breastplate were not the Urim and Thummim.

15 ¶And thou shalt make the breastplate of judgment with cunning work; after the work of the ephod thou shalt make it; of gold, of blue, and of purple, and of scarlet, and offine twined linen, shalt thou make it.

16 Foursquare it shall be being doubled; a span shall be the length thereof, and a span shall be the breadth thereof.

17 And thou shalt set in it settings of stones, even four rows of stones:

***

21 And the stones shall be with the names of the children of Israel, twelve, according to their names, like the engravings of a signet; every one with his name shall they be according to the twelve tribes.

***

29 And Aaron shall bear the names of the children of Israel in the breastplate of judgment upon his heart, when he goeth in unto the holy place, for a memorial before theLord continually.

30 ¶And thou shalt put in the breastplate of judgment theUrim and the Thummim; and they shall be upon Aaron’s heart, when he goeth in before the Lord: and Aaron shall bear the judgment of the children of Israel upon his heart before the Lord continually.

So if that stone is real the bet letter in is would reflect the name of one of the tribes, rather than being from the Urim and Thummim itself, which is probably where they got this:

In her notarized report, she observed next to the letter bet “what can be perceived as the image of a wolf.” She noted that the wolf corresponded to the blessing Jacob gave Benjamin.

Binyamin is a wolf that raveneth; in the morning he devoureth the prey, and at even he divideth the spoil. Genesis 49:27

That's Doctor Strange.  I didn't spend six years in Strange Medical School to be called "mister", thank you very much!*

*This joke never made sense to me, because you're not named after the name of your medical school.  But oh well, it still came to mind.

"The stones of the choshen mishpat,  the High Priest’s breastplate, were referred to in the Bible as the urim v’tummim, a phrase that defies translation."

It is okay in the In the News forum if it is a news item like this, I believe...or I have been breaking the rules for many years.

Yes, several yokels were unable to distinguish between (1) Joseph's seerstone(s), (2) the Nephite interpreters, and (3) the Jewish Urim & Thummim, which are all completely different objects.

Prof James Strange is a very prominent archeologist (Univ of So Florida), and has great credibility among his fellow scholars.  See the following video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dy5ttMZr3JQ .

................................................

Actually, the breastplate featured 12 stones representing the 12 tribes of Israel, whereas the Urim & Thummim are two separate stones used by the HP to decide issues in question.

A rabbi would not likely have anything to do with priestly artifacts in any case.  However, we may have part of the treasure seized by the Knights Templar back in those days -- if there were such a treasure at that late date.

The funniest comment was the girl that was convinced this 'discovery' of an authentic urim and thummim was proof that the Mormon seerstones being held in the SLC Temple are fake!

I've read up a bit on James Strange. Fascinating guy. His name jumped out at me because I first read it as James Strang.

If this is an authentic artifact, this explanation seems more likely to me.
It seems more likely the courageous knight would have thanked himself, by helping himself to whatever he could find of value.

I would be more comfortable if there was something credible linking this article to James Strange. I have my doubts about the claim that he is involved.

You doubt because you don't want to believe.

Well if you don't buy this story, I've also got a urim and thummim that was given to a distant relative by a templar knight.
I'll let you have it for $215 million.
