juliann Posted February 24, 2016 Posted February 24, 2016 Beyond Biography: Sources in Context for Mormon Women's History is a free symposium, Mar. 3-4 held at the BYU Conference Center on Thursday and the LDS Conference Center on Friday. No registration is required. There is a mix of speakers from Julie Beck to our best professional historians. I live in Davis County, I guess I should take the Frontrunner to Provo, but do I hop on another train to get to BYU? I've never ridden TRAX or FrontRunner. For the return trip, catch the 830 on the other side of the street to go back to the Provo Frontrunner station. Be aware that only one day of the conference is at BYU. The other day is in Salt Lake City, at the Conference Center Theater. In Salt Lake, you can get off FrontRunner at the North Temple station. From there, it is a bit of a walk up to the Conference Center, but not bad, just a few blocks. Or, you can get get on TRAX at the Arena Station and ride for free just one stop up to the Temple Square Station and walk from there to the Conference Center. 3

I will decide on both or one of them. I think the last session on Friday looks pretty good. But may try both.

The talks are submitted for review and some are selected for inclusion in a bound volume published by BYU Religious Studied Center and sold at LDS book outlets. My contact didn't know how long that would take, but typically the book appears within a year. 1

It wasn't packed or anything, but scholarly conferences rarely are.

I got to attend the last two sessions of the conference today. I was amazed at the crowd and the thoughtful questions afterwards. I even got to see Scott Lloyd, at least I think it was him, down at the front taking lots of photos. I was sitting toward the back. At first felt dumb going alone, but saw several women sitting by themselves. I hope one day to see a lot of what was written in the book The First 50 Years of Relief Society: Key Documents in Latter-day Saint Women’s History that was highlighted at the end, integrated in RS and PH class curriculum. It was compared to the JS Papers Project. But in the book they had to cram 50 years of women's stories and RS history. They discussed that women even had quorums like the men do now. Or were called quorums also. Enjoyed the talk about the women who have a calling with no name...mission president's wives. I guess the leaders are still out on that subject. One lady raised her hand and thought they should be called mission president's wives and that is all, because it's good that we reiterate that he's married and has a wife in today's deteriorating desires for marriage. At least I think that's where she was going with that proposal. I heard maybe they could be called presidents. Or as the presenter mentioned a presidentess, something like that. All in all a great symposium, glad it was free parking and didn't have to pay the $10 bucks for parking at the conference center. That was nice! I sat with some very intelligent women and men, that's for sure. 1

I like Mission President and Mission Director...he presides over what the missionaries do in their role as missionaries, she directs the care and feeding the mission itself, making sure the missionaries fulfill their role of taking care of themselves and others.. 1
