Apparently some are reading the scriptures the wrong way

For the 5th Sunday of the month we had a woman speaker who goes around speaking on scripture study. Every week this month sacrament talks have been on reading scriptures. Well anyway the woman said a GA said that Satan gets us in our scripture study and wants us to read the scriptures through from start to finish in order. I found that odd since I've always read the scriptures from start to finish, but she said thats what Satan wants us to do with our scriptures and what we should be doing is looking up a topic in the topical guide and going through the scriptures until we find something that calls to our spirit. I guess I've been reading scriptures the way Satan wants this whole time.

She goes everywhere to speak. Goes to California, Utah. Her last name is Alan. Not from the ward or stake. And only and always speaks on scripture study.

Is this her?

"The only thing Satan

Quote

hates and fears more than the Book of Mormon itself, is Latter-day Saints learning why and how to use it."  --President Sommerfeldt

Formatting screwed up, but she posts a Lord's way of studying.  Haven't read it all yet, but I can see how it might be confusing.

We were recently instructed as a ward to read I Nephi in 9 days. Why? Because the mission president said he did a study of all the converts from the past year, and those that were baptized and still active had read I Nephi in 9 days. I guess that's possible.

Since I screwed up formatting, new post rather than edit.

You likely misheard her given she says this:

"Reading sequentially in the scriptures is great! We should read the Book of Mormon through from time to time. From reading sequentially we learn the stories and the lessons. However, when we read individual scriptures by topic we can put our name right into the scriptures and they speak specifically to us. Then we are no longer reading the promises and promptings the Lord gave to Lehi or Nephi, we are reading the promises and blessing He is giving to us as individuals."

Just as I suspected...

I suspect this woman is slightly off her rocker.

I do not think the LDS Church should be impugned with every off-hand teaching of every Tom, **** and Harriet.

But I do think the LDS Church should be accountable for the teachings of its leaders.

I would like to add that having the toilet paper feed from the bottom is also Satan's way.

Seriously though, one thing I've been meaning to try is reading the NT in the order of composition. Seems like a great way to follow the development of early Christian theology.

I've read the scripture front to back, back to front, topically, and randomly--in that I created a random number generator that had each number tied to a book and chapter.  Each method is boring enough.  I'd say spend more time reading and studying topically outside of the scriptures.  There is as much and in many cases more to be gained from sources outside the scriptures.  To pretend our scriptures are the only source from which inspiration from the Divine will come is preposterous (there now maybe my rep point for Volgadon has some explanation).

If the Spirit ismwith you, then how can it not be profitable?

Didn't say it wasn't profitable.  I said it was LESS profitable, because it often is.
The scriptures aren't novels.

Strange that in Seminary, books of scripture are read start to finish.  Looks like we've been training a lot of little Satanists all this time.

Satan is pleased with early morning seminary making teenagers wake up at 5am. Ugh.

I taught early morning seminary for years.  I would get home from work about 9 pm, get something to eat,  prepare for an hour, then go to bed.  I would wake up at 4:30, prepare for another hour, teach class, go to work, then start the cycle all over again.  I still get feedback and comments (positive ones) from many of those students, most of them having graduated 8 or 9 years ago.  One girl had her car broken into a couple of years after she graduated.  Her purse as well as everything else she had in the car was stolen.  Her scriptures were in there, too.  Her parents told me the only thing that she was upset about losing were her scriptures, which she had filled with notes during her years in seminary.

It wasn't easy for them or for me, but the rewards are undeniable.

Ya I'm not knocking early morning seminary, just for me it was hard because in high school I worked late at a retail job and then did homework and then tried to go to bed and be up at 5am every morning. I like to sleep in a little. Only thing that got me through early morning seminary as a senior was that I was set apart as the Seminary President.

I see absolutely nothing satanic about studying the scriptures from beginning to end rather than by princples. I suspect if it was Satan's influence we wouldn't study it that way in Sunday School. (Which btw was an awesome lesson. I never realized Nephi's bow could be so instructional)

What did you learn about nephi's bow

We had quite a discussion on it.

How it's interesting that he made an arrow with the bow, which is a detail that indicates that the person writing it was familiar with crafting and using bows. (Did Joseph have any experience using or crafting bows?) Apparently with a new bow its likely that the arrows compatible with the steel bow would not have been as useful with a new wood bow.

How laman and Lemuel were always complaining about Nephi stealing their right to rule, but when Nephi's bow breaks they don't do a thing to show any leadership. They get angry at Nephi. Yet their bows were useless too. Somehow that's Nephi's fault and they end up relying on Him to fix the problem.

There were lots of little things like that

I like the 2013 new era article called nephi's bows it talked about it breaking many because of humidity or something also the teacher said it also broke because nephi got distracted and was not paying attention so it broke not nephi's fault he had a good excuse he was a newly wed

it also makes you wonder why the Lord inspired Nephi to include that account. I mean thousands of things probably happened to them on that trip and yet breaking the bow is the one the Lord wants us to have thousands of years later.

we had another incredibly awesome sunday school lesson. We didn't get out of 2 Nephi 1. Alot of our discussion took place about the promises made for us who dwell here and the need to wake up. The Spirit was extremely strong. It's been like that two weeks straight. I have to say I really like that.

I see it more as expecting to hunt animals with a bow and arrows you made yourself out of wood growing in the desert being an unrealistic expectation, and who knows what they used for string it. Roughly equivalent to having your hunting rifle break and then trying to down a deer with a zip gun. The deeper issue, like in the equivalent stories of the children of Israel murmuring about food in the desert, is a lack of faith in divine providence.

I've only read it beginning to end my whole life because I like things to go in as much order as possible.

I'll be candid, that while I find it is strong wording to say it is Satanic, (I'm guessing you misunderstood) I also think you, yourself, make a good argument for her claim that it is not as productive means of study as others. Where you freely acknowledge that is all you have ever done is read straight through it is also evident by the nature of most of the threads that you start that you are not getting spiritual answers to what in many cases are very simplistic questions.  Again please take this in the spirit it is given and do not be offended, however, as opposed to writing her and reporting back to us if she agrees with your summation of her comments, try it.

Try her suggestion of letting the spirit guide you to finding a topic that the Lord indicates is the most important for you to study.  Then in a Word Document, start gathering every scripture you can find on the subject and just put them all together in one location.  Then read each verse and beneath each rewrite the verse in your own words and let thoughts and impressions be documented as well. For a first time effort this should be sufficient.  When you have completed that process of genuinely working through a subject from top to bottom, from east to west, up down and sideways all the while seeking the spirit to guide and asking the Lord to open your mind and your heart in prayer concerning your subject  then report back to us what you have learned.

A test of her words will go much further to educate you to the truth of diligent, sincere scripture study than creating one more superficial approach to learning by asking the opinions of forum members.

If you go to LDS.or you don't even need a word program to do this. Sign in with your username and you can create a "notebook" for it. If you have the phone app you can access the notebook from wherever you take your phone and add references there as well.
