JAHS Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 Did Jesus Visit Russia After His Resurrection? An interesting story on an ancient Russian folk tale about how Jesus came to visit the Russian people after his resurrection. The painting was “inspired by an ancient folk tale that said after Christ’s death he visited the Slavic people, ancestors of the Russians, to bring his gospel. The people who listened to Christ were the humble and lowly in the farms and countryside. They took upon themselves his name which when written phonetically in our characters rather than Cyrillic is Kristiany. The word for peasant in Russian is Kristiany. Those who believed in Him took upon themselves His name.” 1
thesometimesaint Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 We don't have any scriptures on it yet. But I have no problems with it, and kinda like the idea.
Calm Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 When we were in Russia, a woman told us that not only had Christ visited, but those he visited left records much like the BoM. She knew Mormons so it could have been a total scam. She said it was in a mountainous area that wasn't well traveled. Felt a bit like Shangri La. Have no clue if she was repeating credible (not enough detail to feel that way though), repeating a story (seemed likely) or was conning. If I remember I will have to ask my husband if he remembers or my sister-in-law who might have heard that same thing as she was there on the same boat trip.
Calm Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 (edited) Never mind. I just opened up the article to read and found out the author is my brother in law, I could never remember if he was trying to find that picture or already had it (that he had just been shown it or given it). Should have known it was going to be him. Hope this means he's gotten more info than last we talked about it. Will have to go see if he has. IIRC, we were out there in June or July of 92 though it might have been 93 so just after he got this picture. Edited January 9, 2016 by Calm
Calm Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 Okay, so what he says in the article is what he told us before though my recall wasn't perfect. The woman coming up to me and speaking of the same thing seems to confirm the story was present in Russia...at least around Mormons. A lot of them wanted to be our friends for sure....and some of those wanted to sell us stuff or curry favour. The comments seem to indicate that the picture isn't necessarily what he was told. I tend to be more cynical than Mark on this. I hope he has it all documented though I can testify that this was the same story he was telling about it from day one to us.

Funny thing is, I saw it on my FB feed and was going to start a new topic on it. Small world that it comes from your brother.
Calm Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 I would love to find out more about it, but don't read Russian.
theplains Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 On 08/01/2016 at 0:50 PM, Deborah said: Why not. He said he had other sheep. According to 3 Nephi 16:1-3, Jesus would personally visit the other tribes. 2 Nephi 29:11-14 speaks of other scriptures which would be similar to the Book of Mormon and the Bible. The latter has yet to be proven. Thanks, Jim
Zakuska Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 I wonder if Jesus ever ate any Zakuska with his wine. 1
Avatar4321 Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 He was the first to truly do a world tour. 1
volgadon Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 Cal, no offense, but your brother-in-law's claim is wildly inaccurate and even when he has conceded that the three figures behind Christ are not the apostles and that Nesterov included the three (Sts George, Nicholas, and Sergiy of Radonezh) for a reason, he still sticks to the original claim.
Calm Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 (edited) I was hoping you would speak up. This is good to know. I am not surprised, given there were occasions it was obvious we were being told things people thought we would like to hear, sometimes for money, but other times because I think they just wanted to make us happy. Worldwide problem, after all. I am wondering if you told me this before and that was one of the reasons I was so skeptical and I had forgotten, my memory being full of holes these days. Shangri La is right. Nicholas Roerich - a favourite artist of mine - saw the Altai mountain as the (or a) spiritual cradle of mankind, and was constantly combining ancient Slavic and other lore with ancient Indian and Tibetan stuff. He was one of the populisers of the Aquarian Gospel, or the Jesus in India claims. 1
Calm Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 So the picture is not that, but the comments talk about some traditions that Christ visted certain areas. Have you heard of these?

Have you heard of these? Here is a representative selection of the kinds of folklore told of Christ. https://books.google.com/books?id=elI_AQAAMAAJ&printsec=frontcover&dq=Christ+Russian+folktales&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjkgsX-65rKAhUX52MKHVbNDLQ4ChDoAQgaMAM#v=onepage&q=Christ&f=false As far as legends about Christ visiting specific places, there is one about lake Baikal, for example, but it must be noted that Baikal was never Rus. The legend is about him blessing the lake's environs, not appearing to people like in 3 Nephi. I can also plausibly explain the creation of the legend.

Krest'yane is the older Russian term for Christian. It meant any people who were baptised, regardless of social status. The first use of it to mean peasants was in the 14th century when Khristiane came into vogue, a form closer to Greek.
Meadowchik Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 A sister in our ward from Peru says that among Peruvians, even non-LDS, it is widely believed that Christ visited them in ancient times.
Alan Posted March 3, 2016 Posted March 3, 2016 The Slavs are not Israelites. He didn't minister directly to Gentiles.

thesometimesaint Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 Jesus told his Apostles to go unto all the world. Are you saying Jesus told them to do things he refused to do? The Israelites were scattered all over the earth if the Scriptures are to be believed.
Storm Rider Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 Though I believe that Jesus did visit other people this is one legend that I hope is true. I have found such a deep vein of mystic spirituality among the Russian people that I can only conclude that the Spirit has worked deeply with them. Thanks for sharing and I will continue hoping.
