My grandfather was told as a child that he was part of a chosen generation and must prepare for the Second Coming. So were my parents. The Second Coming grows ever closer but I do not know if it will be in the next decade or in the days of my great great grandchildren.

Your grandpa was clearly mistaken - our's is the chosen generation. When we are in the next estate conversing with others born throughout all of time, we will curiously ask one another which prophet we lived under. As you humbly disclose you lived under Pres Monson, a hush will fall over the crowd and all will kneel in your presence. You Nehor, are one of the great ones saved for these latter days.

President Packer's announcement that that quote was incorrect came out when I was on my mission. It was announced at a Zone Conference right after a Zone meeting in which a Zone Leader shared that quote to make us feel special. His face was a little red.
