Share personal experiences. Share how the Book of Mormon has changed you etc.this thread is welcome to anyone believer or non believer as long as it's meant to uplift. 1
Garden Girl Posted May 25, 2015 Posted May 25, 2015 Of course, there are many, many scriptures that touch me from the BoM... but I have my favorites... my most favorite is found in 3rd Nephi and the account of Christ visiting the Nephites.... in particular Chapter 17 where one can see his love and tenderness for the people... as he looked upon the multitude he was moved with compassion... and concern... 3rd Ne 17:6... And he said unto them: Behold, my bowels are filled with compassion towards you. And then he asks if there are any sick among them... and to bring them to him and he would heal them for he was filled with compassion and mercy...And those who had been healed and those who were whole did come forward and worshipped him, and did kiss his feet, and bathed is feet with their tears.Then Christ said that their little children should be brought to him... and the people did so and set them down upon the ground and Jesus stood in their midst... and he commanded that the multitude should kneel down upon the ground.V. 14... And it came to pass that when they had knelt upon the ground, Jesus groaned within himself and said: Father, I am troubled because of the wickedness of the people of the house of Israel.V. 15... And when he had said these words, he himself also knelt upon the earth; and behold, he prayed unto the Father, and the things which he prayed cannot be written, and the multitude did bear record who heard him.And the people did bear record that no eye had seen, nor ear heard so great and marvelous things as they saw and heard as Christ prayed to the Father... no tongue could speak, nor could there be written by any man, nor could any man conceive so great and marvelous things that they saw and heard Jesus speak, and they were filled with joy that filled their souls...Then Jesus bade them rise and said unto them: Blessed are ye because of your faith. Have you ever read anything so beautiful that, to me, gives insight into Christ... his love and compassion, his mercy... I love thinking how he wept because he loved so deeply and felt compassion so deeply... and how he knelt and blessed the children... and lovingly called them "little ones" ... every time I read these passages, it brings tears to my eyes because I know that Christ loves me in this same way... and feels the same compassion for me... for all of us... Here are all these people who have been through such adversity walking about the signs and then he appears and invites them to touch the wounds he suffered for them. I think I could read that a million times and still feel the awe of that experience. 3

As I was coming back to the LDS, many miracles were ocurring. This verse was amazing. It explained the miracles...and reminded me from whence they came and why. 5

Garden Girl Posted May 26, 2015 Posted May 26, 2015 (edited) Another part of the BoM that is a favorite is King Benjamin's sermon to the people... wise words for us today just as importantly as anciently...And, even the very first verse where Nephi tells of being born of "goodly" parents... how many times have I prayed and given thanks for being born of a goodly mother... my life could have been so much different if she was not the person... the woman... that she was. Here she was only 29 (and quite pretty) when my bio dad ran off and left us... not giving one thought to our welfare... but my mom, even though lonely I'm sure, didn't run around or seek out men. She devoted her time to her two little girls (3 and 6 years old), and participated in activities such as Campfire Girls, and a knitting club with some lady friends. She made our life wonderful... and my sis and I never realized until we got older just how very poor we were. So... I was born of a goodly mother... and it was this goodly woman who received the missionaries and their message of the restored gospel... she had ears to hear and a hearkening heart...When I was age nine, one of my mom's friends from Campfire told her she should meet her brother-in-law who was just recently divorced and had custody of his daughter... so my mom agreed to meet him... and that's how she met the man who would become my step-father... they dated for a couple years... she was very careful about the man she would allow to share her life... and ours. Before she would marry him, he had to give up drinking completely because of how my bio dad's drinking had affected her, and sis and me. When I was 13, my step-father converted to the Church, and just about a year later we travelled to Salt Lake City where we were sealed as an eternal family. (During the time my dad was taking the discussions, I'd see him in the evenings, in his favorite chair, reading the Book of Mormon and other materials the mishes gave him).My folks were TBM all the rest of their lives. My biggest regret is that my mom did not live to see me return to Church after so many years of my being inactive. She never was able to sit with me in Church as an adult... nor attend temple with me.... I weep for that... But as I read the scriptures, particularly the Book of Mormon, I take comfort... and I remember being sealed as a family as if it was yesterday... from the beach on a lovely, sun filled afternoon... gentle breeze, deep blue sea.. clear blue sky... prayers to those living in the states where the rains have been so heavy and devastating... Oh that all of my prayers were this sincere, even if this short. Mosiah 4: Is the formula for life long forgiveness and conversion. Alma 19: This chapter details doctrines so sacred I dare not even try to elaborate on them here, other than to say we can learn a lot about the divine role of the genders and why they are separate and very, very equal. Alma 32: This chapter is about knowledge and belief. Alma teaches us how to know. His formula works. I have used it. Moroni 7: This chapter is about judging and deciphering between what is good and what is evil. This chapter has come to be the most useful in my everyday life. And this is to say nothing of 3 Nephi... 4

While doing my scripture study I came across this gem:2 Nephi 10:2 For behold, the promises which we have obtained are promises unto us according to the flesh; wherefore, as it has been shown unto me that many of our children shall perish in the flesh because of unbelief, nevertheless, God will be merciful unto many; and our children shall be restored, that they may come to that which will give them the true knowledge of their Redeemer. What a comfort that scripture is to me!! I must have read it about 100 times this past week 3

Sp0ckrates Posted May 28, 2015 Posted May 28, 2015 Hey, my favorite stalker! (Just kidding!) Thanks for that link. I did a search for the word dormant and it found just the verse I was looking for. A Mormon friend of mine suggested I read the chapter having that verse. I asked why Alma said faith was dormant and what that meant. She didn't know but suggested I ask here. Here is the verse:And now, behold, is your knowledge perfect? Yea, your knowledge is perfect in that thing, and your faith is dormant; and this because you know, for ye know that the word hath swelled your souls, and ye also know that it hath sprouted up, that your understanding doth begin to be enlightened, and your mind doth begin to expand.(Alma 32:34)
bluebell Posted May 28, 2015 Posted May 28, 2015 I think Alma means that once we have proven something true, then we don't need to have faith in it anymore. Faith is hope in things unseen. Once we know that a tree will produce good fruit, for example, then we don't hope that anymore-we know it. And we know it because we've 'seen' the fruit. No more need to hope and nothing is unseen, therefore, faith isn't being relied upon any longer. It's dormant.

Rivers...This was one of my favorites that I also cited... the imagery of the Savior kneeling and weeping, blessing the children... the angels ministering to them... and then the Savior turning to the parents and saying "Behold your little ones." The tenderness of that phrase brings tears to my eyes... GG
