Pictures Of Jesus In Our Home

This is not a fight you want to have... there are numerous "religious" pictures that are availalbe through Deseret Book that depict  our faith principles... and, of course pictures of the temples... people coming into your home and seeing a temple picture could perhaps ask questions about what building it is, and you'd have an opportunity to explain about our temples vs chapels.  Missionary moments...

I say arguing about pictures of Christ is not a fight you want to have because somehow it just doesn't seem right when there are so many other pictures available that demonstrate our faith...

I don't see that Anakin7 said he wanted a fight, just a picture of Christ in what is his home too.  Isn't Christ the zenith of your faith?

I would love to get a Jesus painting for the house but rarely have I seen any rendering of Him that really speaks to me.

I'm fond of this one:

That's amazing!

We have it in our living room after i found it on sale for 50% off.  Otherwise we never would have been able to afford it.

I'm amazed that it's by Arnold Freiburg since he's the artist who did the BoM pictures of Nephi and those stories where the men have super huge arms.  I don't like those pictures at all and would never have been able to guess they were painted by the same guy.

Of course Christ is the center of our faith... however, Anakin7 indicated he had asked politely, and even with loving kindness tried to explain why he wanted a picture of Christ... "but to no avail."  I can't even begin to imagine why his formerly Catholic wife, now LDS, would be so adamant about not displaying a picture of Christ in the home as it makes no sense, nor does her comment that that was something Catholics did, not LDS... but it doesn't seem that arguing about it, creating contention, would be something that Christ would want.  If his wife thinks that LDS do not display artwork featuring Christ, she's misguided...

How is continuing to advocate for something one finds spiritually uplifting in one's own home creating contention?  Anakin7 seems to want to address is wife's misguided understanding, he specifically asked for info on the subject of LDS and pictures of Christ.  It's unkind to accuse him this way.

Hello Yirgacheffe...

Continuing to "advocate" for his wanting to have pictures of Christ in the home, if his wife continues to ignore his wishes and continues to verbally refuse his attempts... it's called arguing...

And I didn't "accuse" Anakin of anything... I simply suggested that rather than continuing to argue, no matter how patiently, there were other subjects that he might consider, including pictures of the temple, etc.  Or, as you suggest, he could continue to "advocate" (argue) about it with his wife even though after his patient pleading she does not appear willing to change her mind.

What in the world are you talking about... "and then avoiding them as though having a depiction of Jesus in your home is an evil thing."

There is not one LDS home that I know of personally that does not have at least one picture of Jesus... I have a large one called "The Second Coming" and I love it and sometimes just gaze at it.... Some of my friends have numerous pictures of Christ, Christ and the apostles, the temple, etc. in addition to framed quotes by the Savior...

This is also my experience.  Most LDS homes that I have been in have some religious art, including pictures of Jesus.

I just don't understand why his spiritual "needs" don't count in his own home.  If you can't live and express your spirituality in your own home, if you can't even push to have your view understood....I just don't get it.  Why does she get to unilaterally decide what is "kosher" and his expressing and advocating for his point arguing.  Why do you think he should just lay down and give up or be accused of being argumentative?  Why instead of accusing him of arguing don't you provide what he asked for?

I am with you on this.

I don't understand why everyone thinks he shouldn't get a say in this.  It's his house, too.  The attitude here seems to be that he is somehow in the wrong.

So he likes different kinds of art than does his wife.  Why can't they both have what they like in the home?  My husband I had different tastes, but I didn't ban something from the house because of that. Why should I? Why should I stop my husband from having something he likes just because it's not my taste?

Why is the husband expected to be understanding, but the same is not expected of the wife?  How about addressing her inability to be okay with her husband having something he likes?

It is not always what is good for the goose is good for the gander. Some geese bite if their desires are not considered paramount. And some ganders as well.

My BIL is Catholic and when his mother was alive, my sister and mom and I would visit her. In her front door entry she had the most awesome portrait of the "Last Supper" on her wall, very Catholic, but back then it was so very Catholic to my LDS senses that I doubt I would have had one on my wall. Very strange thinking on my part. I'll have to check and see if Deseret Bookstore has them. I remember meeting her for lunch at a restaurant all of us and she having some black on her forehead from burnt ashes I believe, she was celebrating Lent or Ash Wednesday. And I still don't even know what that really entails. I hope Anakin's wife doesn't give up a lot of that Catholic background. But adds it to her Mormonism.

ETA: Checked Deseret Bookstore and they didn't have the "Last Supper" one. Just one showing Jesus alone breaking bread. My husband bought me the one called "The Light of Christ" a few years ago, with Jesus standing in white at the shore of a sea. That was new at the time, hadn't seen it before.

I don't understand either, Yirgacheffe.. he said he has patiently tried to explain to his wife why it's important to him, but she still refuses to "allow" him to put up pictures of Christ... He has "pushed" to have his view understood but apparently "to no avail" (his words).  There reaches a point, then, that to continue to push does become an argument... which is too bad I agree.

Actually, Raingirl, IMO it is the wife who is in the wrong for not being willing to compromise, and respect her husband's view... therefore it seems they are in a standoff...

So it appears he has two options... 1) he can put his foot down and tell his wife it is his home too and he is putting up a picture of Christ whether she likes it or not (since she has continued to refuse to "allow" him to do so in spite of his previous requests), or, 2) he can try to find something else to display that will give him a feeling of peace and spirituality, thus avoiding a contentious situation...
