Glenn Beck... A Man Without A Home

Recommended Posts

Posted

Glenn is a good man who has strongly been effected by the atonement. If he lost his faith in Christ then he is having a very rough time. Prayers for him if any of that is true.

Glenn Beck: I have lost so much faith in man. Par for the course. Put your faith in God, not men

CFR to both of you that in the Beck FB post in question that:

"he no longer attends his ward due to a dispute between several members there."

Hi tonie,

I know that the CFR wasn't directed at me, but I have seen it posted online by others who have heard Beck state this on his show.   I don't know if Beck has actually written about this anywhere.

Here's one such quote:

I was listening to the radio and heard Glenn Beck say he was not attending his ward. Few details were shared, but he did state that something had blown up on Facebook with other members of his ward and this was the final straw that broke the camel's back. He and his colleague, Pat, decided to share the said "offense" with the bishop and SP and are slated to speak with those that were involved in said offense. He said if he didn't have such a strong testimony he would be DONE, DONE, DONE with the church.

Probably only he knows if he is going to Church.  If you read the whole Facebook feed it sounds like he has a falling out with people that he used to trust.  Whatever that means.  He seems volatile and gets set off by all kinds of stuff.

"his frustration is with his perception of Des News"

"he suffers from depression"

So would either of venture to explain how spreading a rumor is not gossip? Or that alluding that he suffers from depression is not gossip?

I will gladly venture to explain. When someone on Facebook posts vague comments that are difficult to decipher it is an open invitation to speculate on what they meant and what led them to post it. It would be gossip if the source was some unattributed rumor. If you do not want people to speculate you do not write Facebook posts that fuel speculation.

Hope that helps.

And you have an authoritative source that defines gossip in such way?  You personall, twisted, opinions do not suffice.

The posts were gossip, plain and simple.

Classic gossip.

I've never watched Beck.  Or listened to him.  (Doesn't he have a radio show?)

I've seen segments, none of which impressed me.  I also recognize those brief segnments could have been taken out of context.  But I also don't watch or listen to that type of program anyway.

I don't have any strong opinions on the guy, but I wish him the best on his journey, wherever that leads him.

Wow.  Not really.

Combined with what he posted himself on Facebook, I'm not sure you can call this "Classic gossip".  He stated things on the radio and then wrote things on Facebook, so they originated with him.

This.

I hope he can work through whatever he's going through.

All we know from his FB post is that he has lost faith in man. He did not say in that FB post that his is suffering from depression, nor that he is not attending his ward (which the OP labeled as a rumor), he did not mention in that FB that he is upset with Deseret News for publishing that he is a tedious blowhard and someone who should not be taken seriously.

So yes, "so-and-so said, that glen beck said X" is gossip, until confirmed or otherwise denied by Beck

Well, if you can't drink, and you can't smoke, and you can't fool around, then there are only so many sins left to enjoy. Over eating and gossiping are a couple of the obvious ones.

This made me laugh.  So true.

No, and I have found that most of the time when someone says something is "plain and simple" they are just trying to be willfully blind to nuance.

Let us say you go in to work tomorrow and your boss says big changes are coming and offers no details. Would it be gossip to try to fill in the gaps. Clearly he does not mind since he or she laid the groundwork. So did Beck. He was purposely vague and shouted it out to the world. Clearly he either does not mind speculation or sucks at communicating (in which case he should find a new career) or he is a colossal idiot. Which do you think it is? I am going with the first option. Gossip also implies we are talking in secret. This board is pretty public.

So no, not gossip. Nice try though.

I do not know what is scarier, that you actually believe what you just posted - fallacies and all; or that you were willing to post it.

Spreading an acknowledged rumor, is gossip.

Appealing to wild speculation that someone is suffering from depression, is gossip.

Perhaps you should read up on what the LDS Church considers gossip; sadly we are all largely guilty of doing it.

So I googled "glen beck not attending his ward" and I came across the quote you provided as evidence of non-gossip.

The quote you provided is from a EXmormon sub board of reddit.

The poster uses the screen name "exmowoman".

The remainder of the quote is :

"[E]veryone can now see how incomplete and flawed [beck's] defense of polygamy was. I have no idea if this is what the said Facebook dispute is all about, but I sure would feel like I had egg on my face over the polygamy defense if I were [beck].

Perhaps someone's shelf is cracking?"

So the only source so far is an apparent exmormon who appears to have an axe to grind.

I think we can agree that both are not just scary; they are horrifying. They reveal the black depths to which a human soul may descend in their avarice and arrogance and the horrifying part is that that perverse evil lurks in all of us.

Oh, and you are wrong about the gossip part.

Oh, and you are wrong about the gossip part.

Prove it.

What does the LDS Church teach about gossip?

What secular definition of gossip supports that wild speculation is not gossip.

I am arguing that something is not something. If it is impossible to prove a negative then the burden of proof clearly lies on your shoulders.

The LDS church teaches that gossip can develop a feeling of malice or damage someone's character. I have no malice and did not create any. I admit I do not think much of Beck's character but nothing I said here would damage it and I do not believe anyone else did either.

Beck wrote his comments on FB so that people can comment on his post. Is this gossip? I don't think so but it is speculation. However, if stretched, all the comments on his FB page can be considered gossip I suppose, however, since his FB page was very general in context, gossip is to be expected.

He does suffer from depression. It is in his book.

Um,..his polygamy defense was incomplete and flawed.  It was discussed at length on here too:

Is this vicious gossip too?

I wonder why Beck doesn't comment back and clear up the gossip. I guess he likes it being perpetuated possibly.

What some people do not understand is that beck is a public figure who appears in the media. His post was on facebook in order to get the public to comment and speculate about his post. It keeps him in the public domain. Those who believe that the members are gossiping here do not understand the role of publicity for a public figure. Of course, beck would encourage gossip about his facebook page. This is why he posted his page.

Looking at the things he does I doubt that he is even aware or if he is he considers it as unimportant and irrelevant.

that would be my guess. He is extremely busy with running his company. I doubt he is aware of this. And while I haven't heard much of his show the last few days he hasn't been acting any different then he normally is. I have seen nothing showing any faith crisis
