What Is "the Church"?

And yet, the people are a reflection of what the church is. They go together like a horse and buggy. Would the mormon be great and near perfect without the lds church? Maybe not. So, that member is a mirror into the church and what it is.

I disagree, some of the best people I know are not "Mormon" they belong to other religions, does that make their religion true? Are they good and righteous people because of their religion?

Being "Mormon" is not a measuring stick of righteousness or the truthfulness of the church.

The church is not perfect. Neither are the people. Neither is the prophet. If we remain focused on perfection we're going to be bombarded continually with disappointment.

is that bad? After all, one of Christ's commands was to be ye therefore perfect, no? Maybe we're supposed to be walking around as defeated wasted disappointments.

Yes, being defeated and disappointed all the time is a bad thing. It's harmful to the individual. When the Savior said "Be ye therefore perfect" what he meant was Be ye therefore complete or whole.

We would need have a george bailey experience to see what life would have been like without the church. The poster stated that the mormons were great and near perfect. It was a general statement about mormons. What would these people be like without the church? And would that general statement represent most mormons? It seems that people equate the church with great people.

So we're going to be continually disappointed and feel defeated if we lack being complete or whole. None of us are, are we?

The Bride of Christ.

Our Mother? Or is each member married to him?

Are you suggesting that I, a man, am married to another man, who is Christ?

Bridegroom

Jesus Christ is symbolized in the scriptures as the Bridegroom. The Church is his symbolic bride.

Yeah I know but am I and every other member of the Church married to him as his bride or is the church our Mother with her, collectively, being the bride.

Come to think of it, more, does that make any kind of difference? Maybe a little, I guess, like how a corporation is a person but also the people in it.

Christ only has one wife, though right? And we're all it?

You may be trying to stretch the symbolism a bit too far.

No, the point being if you expect everyone to be perfect, without flaw, you will be disappointed because no one, not prophets, parents, spouse, bishop, can live up to that expectation.

Why should I feel defeated and disappointment all the time? Better to follow the advice of King Benjamin and remember our own nothingness and rejoice continually. I took upon myself the name of Christ. To bemoan my own failures and disappointments is to suggest that He failed and He did not. I/He is still a work in progress.

Although the great Nehor does need them, 100 thumbs up for this!

Yahhoooo! we're a bunch of nothings, less than the dust of the earth, one among billions of billions.

It sure makes it easy to rejoice when we remember how nothing we are, huh?

Oh but you are a special child of God reserved to come forth in these last days. you are better than the other billions, no?

To the OP, I also grew up Baptist, and yes we called the building the Church, and even LDS do the same. Although it is usually more along the lines of "the chapel or the church building". In the scriptures it states, "wherever two or more are gathered in my name, there also will be my Spirit" (to paraphrase). Using this scripture it can be argued that Church can even be via the Internet or TV, when it comes to General Conference, just two days away. Or for those who shut-ins they can attend "Church" when weekly the Church has Sacrament meeting over the air...to a point. When this is case the Bishop should insure that the Sacrament is taken to that person who cannot attend due to health or handicap reasons who are not in attendance.

Having said all of that, when we say "the Church" we are also referring to the worldwide organization and all it's members. A Church that is so structure that even the traveler, vacationer, those on military deployment can enter any one of its building and know that the lesson at their home Ward is the one being taught. That if a Priesthood holder that person my be able to even step in a bless the Sacrament, and even take part in ordinances. Usually when the person is unknown to the Bishop, they can present their Temple Recommend, if there is any question. If there is a snow-in or other weather that causes the cancelation of a meetings, and with the permission of the Bishopric, it a Priesthood holder is in the home they can administer the Sacrament...thus for this day the home is the Church (which the home is always an extension of the Church). Something else to note, in the Bible Dictionary. If you look under Temples you will read the following comment, "Only the home can compare with the Temple in sacredness". This comment elevates the home above the Ward building...wow!

  • Mosiah 26:22

22 For behold, this is my church; whosoever is baptized shall be baptized unto repentance. And whomsoever ye receive shall believe inmy name; and him will I freely forgive.

That's what I said (without the quote).  The Church are those who are baptized and enter into the Everlasting Covenant.  Just that simple.

Then those who have that membership confirmed in the eternities become part of the Church of the Firstborn - the Heavenly Church.

Yeah, but don't tell anyone. They might feel bad. ;)
