Short story: Street preachers routinely use mockery to deride the sacred beliefs of others. They also are quick to use a double-standard to condemn other mockers, but engage in the behavior themselves.

Mockery is unbecoming any professing to be a disciple of Christ.

As I read the opening post, my mind was directed to (1st Samuel 8:7) that offers an interesting perspective here:  If what you do is of the Lord, it's not you they are mocking, it is the Lord.  So you pray for them all the more.  If you are offended by what they do, pray all the more!  The Lord just revealed pride in your heart.  Without pride it is impossible to be offended (which is the greater sin).  Just my thoughts!

Good point, TF. I am not offended. I am, instead, sorrowful for those who profess to represent Christ and to deliver His message who use mockery of others' sacred things to further their purposes.

Good point and it makes all Christians look bad in the eyes of the atheist.

What I've noticed repeatedly about those guys is that persuading someone to their faith or leading a person to truth is not their priority. It is to disrupt the sublime feeling that conference-goers are anticipating as they go into or experiencing as they emerge from the Conference Center. However deplorable, hypocritical or despicable their methods may be is of no great moment to them.

In that sense, they are very much like the inhabitants of the great and spacious building in Lehi's vision who are in the attitude of pointing fingers and mocking those who are on the pathway to obtaining the fruit of the tree of life, which is the love of God.

It should make any mocker look bad in the eyes of any caring, humble, charitable person--theist or athiest.

Read the commentary I linked to by Mohamed Ghilan. He makes the point that athiests sometimes promote mockery:

All that is mockery, being sourced from a satanic origin, stands in stark contrast to all that is Sacred. This is evident in the main subjects of mockery, most of which are revered within religious discourse. To make it palatable, the likes of the late Christopher Hitchens say that, "Mockery of religion is one of the most essential things... one of the beginnings of human emancipation is the ability to laugh at authority." If anything is truly deserving of mockery, it's this statement and those like it, which fallaciously link human freedom with mockery of the Sacred.

Mockery of the sacred, from any source, should be eschewed by all.

Wow, the sign in the photo says that God hates both "rebellious women" and Mormons, so I guess the "Ordain Women" movement just created a new level of Hell...

If God hates them both, wouldn't the one rebelling against the other cancel out each other -- in mathematical theory at least?

Could it be they're unaware they are fulfilling prophecy? Could it be they are among those whom Lehi and Nephi saw in vision mocking and ridiculing the saints of God as they joyfully and gratefully partook of the fruit of the tree of life?

Lehi taught there must needs be opposition in all things. Therefore, by their mockery not only do they fulfill prophecy, but they validate the truth of an irrevocable eternal law

That's what I was thinking.

In my personal experience, mockery usually stems from anger and hurt. It isn't at all Christian or Christlike.

My experience is that mockery comes from bigotry and feelings of superiority.

It may appear that way, but it is very often a sign of insecurity rather than feelings of superiority. People who are confident don't need to mock.

They don't need to but very often do.  I come at this from experience and not philosophically.

I always wondered what would happen if a missionary walked over to them, removed his shoe and shook the dust from his shoes at their feet? Then silently put his shoe back on and walk away.   If I saw that happen ,I would run, for lighting would surely strike them!

I mean, hey, I've heard stories in the past about missionaries doing that and some very horrible coincidental consequences as a result! Isn't that a power not be messed with?

Wow, teddy, it's been awhile.  Good to see you back.   :)

Thanks Cal!

I love how caring Cal is to remember everyone and notice when they are absent  a while.

From what I understand that is an ordinance not to be done lightly but with prayer and fasting before hand.

No, they're mutually exclusive and therefore additive.

I think we very often confuse sacred with secret. My garments are not sacred. They are SECRET, as should be all undergarments (that probably explains why the store in the mall is called Victoria's Secret ... and not Victoria's SACRED). The fact that I didn't show off my Fruit of the Looms as a non-member did not make them in some way sacred. As I understand things, the sacred part for us is the covenants that those garments represent; not the garments themselves. Therefore, while I MIGHT take offense at someone mocking those covenants, I take no offense at someone making the garments themselves. Neither would I take offense at someone mocking the size and shape of the vessels we use for weekly sacrament. These things are just symbolic representations; not articles imbued with sacred power (we call those things "idols").

So, I humbly suggest that we all put on our big boy/girl garments and get over ourselves. The only power that the mockers have is the power we give them.

Very disappointing. Such ill informed sentiments do nothing for the glory of God. The bigotry and hatred that ensues in such vile propaganda is telling of the hearts of those who spit it. That's not Lucifer at work but self-inspired evil.
