Ordain-Women Vs. Anti-Mormon Protesters

Recommended Posts

In covering the Ordain Women protest tonight, a surreal scene of irony occurred.  As the women protesters were leaving Temple Square, the normal Mormon protesters directed their street preaching screeching in their direction.

A couple shouts worth mentioning:

"Let women keep silent in the churches!"

and

"Wives, submit yourselves unto your husbands!"

I think the women stole their PR thunder, they must have been a bit miffed.

Do you have more details?

A friend who was there prior to the start of the meeting shared details he observed beforehand, but I am very interested in what happened afterwards if anyone knows anything.

PS:  have I forgotten that you are a reporter?

If so, would love to read your article or see video on the event, etc.

And any details not included in your report as well.  :)

We were all together in Hawaii a few weeks ago. I'm looking forward to seeing their report on the 50th anniversary of the Polynesian Cultural Center, coming up between conference sessions today

Reminds me of when James White, a career anti-Mormon who used to show up at every general conference, was overshadowed by the street screechers and eventually quit coming.

I think he's always been a bit resentful.

It was his great day to shine and they took it from him, of course he would be resentful. ;)

Battle of the male-contents? What better place to stage such a battle than before people filing in to hear the gospel of love?

Scott Lloyd pretty much summed it up, thanks Scott. I'm a videographer for KSL.  We covered the event that night.  Of the 150 or so participants, there were really only a core of a dozen or so, but a lot of supporters were there, some that I have seen at LGBT protests too.  There were definitely devout Mormons there, including Kate Kelly.  From the outset, it just didn't seem all on the up an up.  For example, when they sang the opening hymn in the park, The Spirit of God, the chorister had to use her cell phone to look up the words.  When getting to the end of the first verse, instead of moving on to the second, they repeated the first. When coming back to the park after being denied, the plan was to listen to the session, streamed.   No one was, their mission had been accomplished.  I asked sis Kelly about this, and pretty fast the phones came out and it became a show.  I saw no sincerity to do what had been planned, mainly for the camera.   Just a couple of my observations...

Very interesting, thank you.  Especially since Kate Kelly made a comment about how forlorn it was listening on the cell phone in the part...

In other words, they are not really active Mormons and therefore have no legitimate concern....

I wouldn't say that's entirely the case, there were definitely active Mormons there, and there were also inactive and ex mormons there, some of whom said they were such precisely due to the priesthood issue.  While the issue is real for some, there was too much grandstanding and show to make me think this was the ONLY issue at stake, despite what was portrayed to the masses.

That would seem to be par for the course. When there were about 80 video clips on their site-I think they are up to about 120 or so now-, I actually went and listened to about half of them. Not a big enough sample to be scientific, but about half the women-and men-who had uploaded videos made it clear that they were either ex-LDS but agreed with the core who is currently active, or had never even been members, but were supporting their feminist sisters.

Why do inactive and ex members seem to think we need to change our doctrines and practices for them? Are they going to come back if we did? my guess is no.

We would welcome them back if and when they come. But we cannot change the Doctrines and covenants the Lord has ordained.

This further supports my fears about people who use the media to plead with the prophet to ask the Lord about something. It just does not ring sincere or with an eye single to the glory of God.  It is more single to their own glorification.  A feminist lawyer who bends the LDS Church to her will; what would that do for her business and national recognition?  Nope, too many layers of diverse motivations rather than just writing a private letter to the prophet or asking others to do likewise.

I don't think I should laugh but I am. This is really quite funny.

I'm reminded of when the WBC was protesting an event and White was also in attendance. WBC is 5-Point Calvinist and White is Reformed. Fred Phelps was engaged by White and rather than taking White seriously, Phelps accused White of being a God-hater and did so by yelling at the top of his lungs. It was comical to see two jokes practically on the same side of the fence attacking each other.

I did love Maklelan's responses to White's criticisms he made for YouTube and his Alpha and Omega Ministry site. White is an unacredited hack who is no more a theological doctor than Patrick Dempsey is a real doctor on Grey's Anatomy.

Hi Buzzard,

Do you live in Sydney by any chance?

Close, but not quite.  ;) I lived most of my adult life in California, but am now ensconced in northern Utah County, about 30 miles south of Salt Lake City.

Oh yuck! May as well live in Mesa, Heber-Overgaard, Snowflake, Thatcher or Eagar Arizona. The only worse place would be SLC which has been New Babylon since the first day of arrivals....wait a minute...

It's a less than a half hour plus any applicable traffic to the BYU football and basketball stadiums, and lest my priorities be all askew, fifteen minutes to the Mt. Timpanogos temple. I'll take my chances.
