why me Posted September 20, 2013 Author Posted September 20, 2013 "The way I see it, it would not matter what was found. You would dismiss it. It would have to be a spot on bulls eye for your mind to begin to believe it."I brought up this find for a purpose: it was quite a civilization, certainly matching some of the civilizations in the book of mormon. And new discoveries are still be uncovered on that site. Does it prove he book of mormon? No. But it certainly proves that great civilizations exited in various parts of that continent. And they had the creative abilities of the ancient Egyptians.

The existence of advanced civilizations in ancient Mesoamerica and South America are well known and have been since the European's arrival. In addition, the only relation to Egypt is in the scale of mound projects. If the author had chosen to compare it to a portion of the Great Wall of China would you be advocating for pre-Columbian contact by the Chinese? 1
why me Posted September 20, 2013 Author Posted September 20, 2013 I wonder if you would have been as interested if the archeologist that made the comparison had said Greeks, instead of Egyptians, I would have still been interested. It was a great find about a people who exited during the book of mormon time. They were advanced and had knowledge. In that, I see resemblances with the book of mormon.
why me Posted September 20, 2013 Author Posted September 20, 2013 If the author had chosen to compare it to a portion of the Great Wall of China would you be advocating for pre-Columbian contact by the Chinese? But he didn't. He compared it to Egypt. Here is another article: http://news.discovery.com/history/archaeology/astonishing-ancient-amazon-civilization-discovery-detailed.htm Built long before Christopher Columbusset foot in the new world — the sites date from 200 to 1283 A.D.– theearthworks are the remains of roads, bridges and squares that formed thebasis for a lost civilization, according to a study published in the journalAntiquity.Denise Schaan, co-author of thestudy and anthropologist at the Federal University of Pará, in Belém,Brazil, tells Discovery News about this intriguing finding.Denise Schaan: The geoglyphs are an astonishing discovery. They do not represent the ancient city full of gold long sought by the early explorers of the Amazon, but they are indeed an El Dorado to archaelogists: they are the vestiges of a sophisticated pre-Columbian monument-building society.According to Schaan and colleagues Martti Parssinen from the Universityof Helsinki and Alceu Ranzi from the Federal University of Acre,Rio Branco, Brazil, the structures are formed by ditches about 36 feetwide and several feet deep, lined by earthen banks up to 3 feet high.Denise Schaan: We are talking of enourmous structures, with diameters ranging from 100 to 300 meters, connected by straight orthogonal roads. They are strategically located on plateaux tops above the river valleys. Their builders took advantage of the natural topography in order to construct spaces that were full of symbolic meaning. But who built the structures and what functions they had remains unclear.Denise Schaan: They were probably villages, ceremonial centers, gathering places and point to a society of a complex nature. Indeed, to build these structures you need organization, planning, and large labor force. Amazingly, this suggest that quite substantial population was living in an area long believed to be too harsh to sustain permanent settlements.
why me Posted September 20, 2013 Author Posted September 20, 2013 http://www.sott.net/article/214763-Amazon-Was-Home-To-Large-Civilization-Archaeologists-Say More closer to the book of mormon than meets the eye.
Bikeemikey Posted September 21, 2013 Posted September 21, 2013 I agree. This discovery is very cool. Also, if anything regarding the Book of Mormon, it shows that archeology / man's science does not know everything. But God does. To point of fact: This discovery does demonstrate that man does not know everything, it does not demonstrate that god does know everything. 1
strappinglad Posted September 21, 2013 Posted September 21, 2013 To point of fact: this discovery presents evidence of an advanced civilization existing in the Amazon area. It says nothing about God.
ERMD Posted September 21, 2013 Posted September 21, 2013 Oh Great…that’s all we need to muddy the waters….another possible site for the setting of the Book of Mormon. Added to the LGT (Limited Geographic Theory), the HGT (Hemispheric GT) and the other HGT (Heartland GT)…we can now add, postulate about and debate the BGT (Brazilian GT). Despite all of these alternative conflicting theories, I still stand by my favorite theory for BoM setting…the DNH...seems to be the one with the most evidence supporting its conclusions. Another worthless drive-by. 1
mfbukowski Posted September 21, 2013 Posted September 21, 2013 Thanks for the clarifications on your meanings. I do wish there was some method of determining some statistical problabilities on some of those things. But then you have the old saying, thereare lies, damned lies, and statistics... As you may have guessed by now, I could easily be classified as a TBM. I do believe in the restoration of the Gospel most completely. But I have this odd quirk where I like to see things laid out, to see what the odds of something really having happened are. That is something that I haven't seen done as of yet. Like thr Valley of Lemuel, Nahom, Bountiful connections. What would be the odds of someone who has never been to the area or seen an accurate map make something like that up out of thin air but be able to find very plausible candidates for those places. Or the odds of Joseph actually being the author of the Book of Mormon, forgetting about any historical aspects, but just the otherstuff that has been discovered by different scholars and throwing them all in together. The skeptics feel that it would be rather easy while TBM's say there is just no way. How could something like that be given any type of statistical rating? Oh, to keep the subject on topic, I don't think there has been any type of connection established or even an attempt to be established, between this new arheological find and Egypt or the Book of Mormon. GlennA machinist knows that there are certain materials which just cannot be machined to close tolerances because they are too soft. You can't get a very sharp edge on a wooden knife, because the edge would break down under pressure. I know an electrical engineer whomight say that the task you are asking to achieve above would be like "machining butter". When you start with the ambiguity of language in defining the terms above, you are not going to get the kind of precision in your initial definitions to use mathematical models. "A" will equal "A" only sometimes.
mfbukowski Posted September 21, 2013 Posted September 21, 2013 A civilization in the Americas that suddenly ended 700 years ago most likely did not end due to European diseases.Hey- I've got a new hypothesis. Lehi's crew carried diseases from Jerusalem here and killed off all the peoples of South America (it took a few hundred years) and so they started over Noah style, and that's why other tribes aren't mentioned in the BOM. The "wars" were metaphors for the wars against disease and eventually everyone including the alleged "Nephites" died out too. Where's that phone number for Bookcraft........

Stone holm Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 That was the 4400 not the 144000. Oh no, you are not telling me that the 4400 is not a reality show? Oh my....
Tiki Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 http://news.discovery.com/earth/deforestation-unveils-lost-amazon-civilization.htmI think its awesome that the Gentiles finally inherited the lands of the Nephites in the year 2013. (Mormon 5:19)
Robert F. Smith Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 http://yle.fi/uutiset/finnish_archaeologist_digs_up_ancient_civilization_in_brazil/6837612 ...................................Finnish archaeologist digs up ancient civilization in Brazil Archaeologist Martti Pärssinen has made sensational finds of an ancient civilisation in the Amazonian area. The summer’s digs in Brazil have unearthed unique artefacts, including entirely new forms of ceramics................................................................................ Nothing new here, and this research has been going on for years. Brazil is as large as the continental USA so that it is no surprise that interesting discoveries can be made there as the rain forest is burned and ripped apart. The civilization in question is not a highly advanced civilization such as we find in Mesoamerica.
Robert F. Smith Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 Where does Ogden Kraut publish his books? The late Ogden Kraut did a lot of self-publishing.
