If the planet can't handle that many people, what's going to happen when X number of billions of God's exalted children keep a home on celestial earth?

God has his own ways to control population.

All money is an IOU.

No it isn't. "Money" as most of us think of it is a means of exchange. Checks and credit can be seen as representing IOUs, but cash exchanged for goods and services represents work (whether ones own, or if one is using money given to them, the donor's work).

It's a more convenient way of trading than barter or actually having to work __ hours to buy that TV. One is credited with medium of exchange in proportion to society's premium on his work, and he can trade this medium of exchange for goods and services. How is this an IOU system?

No it isn't.

Yes it is.

You go to work and your boss gives you implicit IOUs in the promise that he’ll pay you on Friday. On Friday, he exchanges those implicit IOUs for an IOU ordered against his bank account—a paycheck. When you cash the check, you exchange those IOUs for cash, which historically constituted IOUs for gold or silver at the nation’s central bank. Now cash is an IOU against goods and services in general. When you purchase goods and services, you receive those valuable things in exchange for the green IOUs you have in your pocket.

The IOU nature of money is intrinsic to why it has value and can be traded for valuable things.

Yes it is. You are exchanging paper, plastic, metal, or blips on a computer screen of no intrinsic value for something of intrinsic value. IOW I am exchanging my IOU for something of intrinsic value that you have agreed to accept.

It is better than barter by a long stretch. As a theoretic say you have all the food in the world, and I have all the gold in the world. If you don't accept my gold as payment. I go hungry.

Just In case nobody here has mentioned it yet, there was a baby "boom" that resulted from men coming back from Wolrd War 2 a while back, and while we've still been making babies since then the numbers have slackened and will continue to slacken because there hasn't been another "boom" comparable to that one since then.... and we also aren't having as many children in our individual families as familes once did in the past.

No need to be afraid.

No need for another boom.

Men and women will continue to go on making babies together because that's just something we do.

What about the reverse of that? Specifically, pressuring people to have large families because if they don’t, they’ll be driving the race to extinction? We’re hearing that rhetoric in this thread, too.

Hysteria and hyperbole in either direction is unjustified.

I say we get the extremists from both sides together and have them fight to the death for our entertainment.

Bonus: The losers will stop consuming resources.

This also means that power will shift in favor of those who do have (and value) large families. In societies that have average family sizes of "one-point-something," demographic groups that continue to have 4-7 children per couple on average will gain exponentially disproportionate power and influence over generations (if it is sustained over generations).

I think you are confusing populace with influence.

Historically, very few retain actual power and influence. And the ones that do tend to have the most resources.

Most families with many children do not have the kinds of means per family member that smaller families have.

All that said, the LDS folks do a good job of instilling a work ethic and education that can give people both. So who knows?

This would give us a chance to use the old Mayan ball courts again.!

I don't know what you guys are talking about. Every day the world is getting smaller (by far). It's bursting at the seams, what can we do? Zero population is the answer. Without it the rest of us are doomed.

Who can survive? Not one of us will be alive. Who can be strong when every inch is gone?

Every day the food supply is shrinking away. With starvation at our door what can we do? Licensing of children is the answer. Without it, the rest of us are through!

And it's a tragedy our oil is depleting each day. Every baby makes it last a shorter time. Legalized abortion is the answer. Without it, there is no peace of mind.

No it isn't. Just ask your accountant if there's a difference between paying your employees in IOUs or cash. From an accounting (and economic) standpoint, they are very different.

You can argue that the IOUs held by Social Security are

because they are originated from the Federal Government, but that isn't the same as having cash. And the difference will become very, very important in the future.

What is interesting is all of the talk about controlling the population because of the limited resources of planet earth results in one thing only; educated people stop having children and the uneducated continue with abandon to populate the earth. What does this say about the future of society? What "culture" will exist when all of the polite educated slowly die out? What is lost with this segment of society? What I think is best is to ignore the silliness of controlling the birth of children to placate some obnoxious prediction that the world is ending and will never provide the for the future growth of humanity. I really do reject these type of nay-saying prognostications as the tinkling brass of the fearful.

We either voluntarily control it, or mother nature will control it for us. I prefer the former.

That sounds ominous. Can you elaborate on what you mean?

Thanks,

Whether it is gold, silver, paper, plastic, or blips on a computer screen. It all an IOU. Ever seen a silver certificate dollar?

You are an IOU. So take that.

No, it isn't. An "IOU" (aka "I Owe You") is a debt, meaning the giver of the IOU is committed to paying at a later date. The giver of cash (or any other form of payment via some agreed upon unit of value based on gold, silver, paper, plastic or blips) has no additional obligation.

It's the first thing you learn if you want to sell stuff on Craigslist. IOUs (be they checks, money orders, wire transfers etc.) are different than cash, and the wise Craigslist seller only accepts the latter.

In the case of Social Security, the problem is that the IOUs in the trust fund are a debt obligation for the US Government which will have to be paid at a later date. This might not be a problem for the Social Security system, but to a government that is already deficit spending, borrowing money at an alarming clip, and printing money, it's something that should at least be factored into the equation.
