Duncan Posted January 12, 2012 Posted January 12, 2012 http://lds.org/church/news/steven-e-snow-called-as-church-historian?lang=eng&cid=facebook-sharedSo, what do you think about Elder Snow being the new Church Historian? Elder Marlin Jensen is turning 70 in May so I think he will be released this year sometime.
Sky Posted January 12, 2012 Posted January 12, 2012 I’m sure Elder Snow will do a great job, but I’m a little bummed to see Elder Jensen a soon-to-be emeritus general authority.

Bob Crockett Posted January 12, 2012 Posted January 12, 2012 I know Elder Snow very well. He was a neighbor of mine when he was a mission president in California and I've hiked Zion National Park with him. He was former Chairman of Utah's Democratic Party. I think. I know he was an elected Dem. A good guy.

I met him and talked for a few minutes when he did a mission tour here and super nice guy!

Calm Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 What is Elder Snow's background before becoming a GA? Any training in history?
Kenngo1969 Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 Yeah. We "release" Seventies from full-time service as general authorities so they can be called as bishops, temple presidents, to administer the PEF, and so on. We have an interesting conception of "retirement" in the Church.
Duncan Posted January 13, 2012 Author Posted January 13, 2012 What is Elder Snow's background before becoming a GA? Any training in history?Lawyer, Democrat-similar background as Elder Jensen-no training in History
katherine the great Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 Lawyer, Democrat-similar background as Elder Jensen-no training in HistorySeriously? I always assumed that the church historians were, well, actual historians!
Duncan Posted January 13, 2012 Author Posted January 13, 2012 Seriously? I always assumed that the church historians were, well, actual historians!ideally they would be! But I dunno sometimes!
Bob Crockett Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 Seriously? I always assumed that the church historians were, well, actual historians! The scriptural mandate is to preserve history, not publish it. In any event, the historian in the office who runs it is Rick Turley.
katherine the great Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 ideally they would be! But I dunno sometimes! They must have professional historians who work under their direction.
Duncan Posted January 13, 2012 Author Posted January 13, 2012 They must have professional historians who work under their direction. As Barney Rubble used to say, "could be, cooouulldddd be!"
Buckeye Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 Interesting that both Elder Snow and Jensen are or were Democrats! I hope BCSpace reads this!Well, as the scripture says: "whereever two or three are gathered in my name".
Duncan Posted January 13, 2012 Author Posted January 13, 2012 something kind of funny that has happened to me twice in my life. When I talked to Elder Snow he had SO much cologne on, I was overwhelmed and I smelled like him for all that sunday and that next day! Someone wanted to know what the name of my scent was and I said its "Au du Utah"!!
Daniel Peterson Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 The officer of Church historian and recorder is an administrative one. The person holding it isn't expected to be a historian himself, in the sense of being a professional academic historian or historical writer. The department employs a number of such people, with excellent academic credentials and records.
sjdawg Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 Elder Jensen was my mission president many years ago. He is one of the finest men I've ever met. He is very sincere and genuine. Elder Snow has big shoes to fill
19nazzy Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 Always appreciated Elder Jensen, seemed to be a very articulate and kind man.
