grapevine Posted December 24, 2024 Posted December 24, 2024 (edited) Background on them, I heard of them when someone with all kind of interesting ideas of Book of Mormon parallels to our day, Mosiahs government parallel to ours. Quote Rodney Meldrum on we’re Book of Mormon events took place. Wants byu to stop teaching evolution and think they teach socialism and communism. Pro homeschooling and anti vex or vaccine skeptic. Person with those ideas quoted blog they wrote on how we shouldn’t blindly follow prophet. Church as much ours as his. He is accountable to members and has no stewardship in family only church. It’s not the members church but Lords and prophet accountable to Lord to teach members. What if prophet is in error, can he become wicked and on. Then said Ezra Taft Benson had to apologize for fourteen fundamental talk. Reading into Ed Kimball’s lengthen your stride no such thing. Meant to underscore President Kimball’s call and talk quoted in General Conference. Blog there quoting Doctrine and Covenants were we are to listen to Joseph Smith not other Presidents. And who are the servants anyone can be. Using Samuel coming from outside hierarchy himself. 5th article of faith and the 42nd doctrine and Covenants, as well as 28th and 50th refute those claims. James who started Foundation a few years ago when the Mtc president sex abuse scandal came out started blog on not blindly following leaders and used that case as well as mountain meadows and Helmuth Hubner as we should not obey blindly. Then talked about George P. Lee, Richard R Lyman and people in Joseph Smiths day that committed serious sins while holding prominent positions. There will be people that fall but those are exception most leaders endure to end. James himself passed away a few years ago. Daughter runs site now. Hannah wrote books on not detecting Hoffman forgeries among historians, also wrote about how Joseph Smith never used seer stone in translation. If he did does it effect your testimony of the Book of Mormon? Doesn’t mine. Didn’t use magic or treasure seeking. He did work for some of the people but not profitable and not dishonorable occupation in and of itself. Critical of what Leonard Arrington and Richard Bushman wrote. They didn’t make Joseph’s parents out to be bad people. He probably did drink like neighbors before word of wisdom was known and felt like failure on some farm payments. Doesn’t mean he was bad father had weaknesses and trials like everyone else. Sariah complained when the sons went to get the brass plates and Lehi murmured when Nephi bow broke. Does that mean they were bad parents? Reading into things of that nature. Before he died James gave talk on greatness of Joseph Smith. We all need testimony of him. However Dallin H. Oaks mentioned that patterns of apostasy can be when we garnish sepulcher of dead prophets but don’t follow living ones. Dead prophets no longer here to declare word. Mentioned that in byu devotional many years ago as well strengths becoming downfalls. Ezra Taft Benson in fourteen fundamentals and Spencer Kimball in other places mentioned that. Living prophet mentions something you don’t want to hear so you wish they would keep there mouth shut. Wonder if that could of became his weakness. Spent lots of time studying Joseph Smith but not prophet that is alive. Brings to to book children wrote on Christ centered home and traditions. I haven’t read it just reviews. What makes there way of raising family better than any other family? Do you have those in the ward whose way is best and are not shy about letting you know? There Book got published. Dating, music dance had idea# there, how they celebrate Christmas different way. Don’t celebrate Halloween, however is the church against wholesome Halloween celebrations? I haven’t heard that? Dallin Oaks said not bad to play video games but keeps you from doing other things better. Wait until game is over to help with chores or have to play when show on someone wants to watch. Problem everywhere. Reviews they may not believe in video games. When he was in Ward Young Mens only did projects were he could take whole family so took young children with him. Could that be a distraction? Took children out of school to avoid bad influence. Could avoid there good influence as well. Homeschool them. In his last testimony said he had it on good authority that Half the byu religion department is teaching Book of Mormon is fiction. We’re did he get that information? May be a few fall through cracks. But with watchdog over them they would not be teaching for long if they said that. Ces keeps close eye on people they hire. Are a few professors may criticize proclamation on family, teach socialism and communism but exception and not rule. They also think there were nephites descendants in Europe were latte4 day Nephrite's. Have any church leaders said that? Brings me to book on there home life. They wrote book and were divorced. You can’t always hold divorce against people and I don’t like to take sides myself. Even divorced people can salvage what is left and make best of bad situations. Move forward. Did overzealousness or abuse cause the divorce maybe both. Just writing book like that on there family traditions and ironically there marriage failed. Is how they raised family any better than anyone else’s as well? Edited December 24, 2024 by grapevine

That is likely their definition of “fiction”, which includes possibly suggesting there are allegory aspects to the storytelling like Nephi tailoring his account to parallel OT stories (Exodus, David and Goliath) to show legitimacy of his kingship rather than something closer to eyewitness testimony in court. Having read how Stoddard and others interpret somethings I am familiar with I don’t trust their accuracy on what I am not familiar with. I am not sure, but I believe the Stoddards support the pseudoscience Universal Model, which is going to make it difficult for their kids to get college degrees if the kids keep insisting it’s right. They won’t be able to pass a basic GE course for science. I feel bad for kids stuck with that. The parents probably love them dearly, but they are setting their kids up to be the wrong kind of outsiders imo. I can see employers questioning their ability to think critically and evaluate the value of ideas even if the job has nothing to do with science. Edited December 24, 2024 by Calm 3

From what I remember, supposedly Hagoth or some other sailors somehow crossed the Atlantic and landed in the Denmark region a little before Julius Caesar's time. I don't remember where I read it, though. I don't recall any church leader talking about it, though.

Dario_M Posted December 24, 2024 Posted December 24, 2024 (edited) True. We shouldn't follow people blindly. Not even our leaders. The only one we need to follow blindly is God offcourse. Humans are just humans. Doesn't matter wich status they injoy. They are imperfect. But not God. God is perfect in any way possible. 🍁💫🌈 Edited December 24, 2024 by Dario_M

Because it is written in the bible old and new testament and in the book of mormon. It's not certain. But many things are not for certainty in this life anyway. 9 hours ago, sunstoned said: Everything we have that supposedly came from God was at best filtered by men. Men wrote the Bible. Men wrote the BoM. But it all started with God. God gave the people (prophets) information. Jesus Christ was sent to the earth by God to teach people the differends from right to wrong. And to save us all for our sins. And because of Jesus Christs mysterious appearance, they made a book about him and the things he taught mankind. So is the bible and book of mormon man made? No. It's not like you're reading the Harry Potter. That is an example of a man made book (story). An untruthfull story that is nothing more then a fantasy. While the book of mormon is not written out of fantasy. This was not something Joseph Smith just made up. His ideas and believes came directly from God himself through his revelations. 9 hours ago, sunstoned said: Prophets are just men. Yeah? So? Btw they are not just ordinary man. They are man with a special gift. The gift to pick up information that came from the angels who where sent by God. Or to even pick up information directly from God himself. 9 hours ago, sunstoned said: and even when they profess to speak for God, they do get things wrong. Sometimes when somebody says something to me i misunderstood that person and i later on need to walk back on stuff and need to hear the story again to finaly really understand what the person was saying to me. The same thing caunts for prophets who receive revelations. Sometimes they misunderstood things. And other prophets received a better version of the revelation and need to correct what has been thought was the truth by the other prophet who had it wrong.
Kenngo1969 Posted December 27, 2024 Posted December 27, 2024 I just did a search for the book, and the only thing that came up is ... this thread! 1
