Oh my you guys. 😓 Yesterday evening i have seen Final Destination part 1 and part 2 together with my partner. I was a bit shocked with all the violence those 2 parts had when i watched them. I was questioning or this was a sin. Watching a movie like that. Do you guys have seen that movie? If so wich parts?

Do i commit a sin with watching those movies anyway? What do you guys think? Will God be happy with that?

Btw today is allready sunday the sabbat day i see. I wish you guys all a nice church service. God bless you. 🩵🙏

Scary movies are supposed to be scary, I'd say it's all in good fun. However, in the dichotomy that everything that is not good is bad, I can't argue it is good. Though not so bad that it's a sin, there might be other consequences, like becoming desensitized to real-life violence, to experience more trauma and avoidance, escape to fantasy, and express less empathy. In very extreme cases, in some people it can contribute to them believing that violence is an acceptable way to solve problems or that it is without consequence. So, I can't recommend it to everyone, everywhere.

Okay so if i understand you correctly it's not a sin. But watching those movies can damage me?

It's true that i allready go into the fantasy. Today i'm planning to go out be myself take a little bus trip and go to Haarlem and go back with the train. Normaly i injoy such trips. But now i'm allready asking myself every possibility that can go wrong today. And how high the chances are that i could die in a horible accident or other horible way. Yesterday i've seen people dying left and right from the most horific accidents posible. It was just a movie offcourse. But it looked pretty realistic.

It's true that i already go into the fantasy. Today i'm planning to go out be myself take a little bus trip and go to Haarlem and go back with the train. Normally i enjoy such trips. I'm just saying, some people might handle it fine, some can't. It may not be sin, it could lead to just being irrationally fearful, or to sin (Though there are other ideas; maybe consuming violent media doesn't make people violent, maybe violent people are just drawn to consume violent media). Some can handle seeing a woman (or man) in a swimwear and not be fazed, some can't. Some people can make a harmless bet, some get addicted to gambling. Some people can drink and quit, some become hopeless alcoholics.

Some feel it is righteous to be vegetarian, who are tempted by meat, while judging others who eat meat, "For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs. Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth: for God hath received him." (Romans 14:2-3)

I won't judge, neither do I encourage you to do things in case you can't handle them, "It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak." (Romans 14:21).

They make you feel bad or harmed, don't watch them. God wants you to feel happy, and His Spirit. Sin is willful rebellion against God's commandments. God does not command every little particular, which is why King Benjamin said (Mosiah 4: 29), "And finally, I cannot tell you all the things whereby ye may commit sin; for there are divers ways and means, even so many that I cannot number them." I would say that willfully doing things you know are harmful to you physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, are a form of sin, but can certainly be repented of. God walks with us though all our experiences, but we still need to learn to reciprocate and walk with Him.

Yeay yeah. That's really clear to me.

I don't watch such stuff, but not because I think doing it is sinful.  More because it is impossible for those images to be scrubbed from my mind, and IRL has enough inescapable ugliness for me to choose to fill my brain with unnecessary exposure.

Yeah but being happy is more difficult then you think. At least for me it is. I have a major depression. My depression is so bad that i need Lorazepam every day to calm me down and prevent me of totaly loss it.

Yeah these FD movies are extremaly voilent. And it looks so realistic. As if it's all real. If you're sensitive for those images you will def have a hard time to get rid of them after you have seen everything.

I had a few years ago seen the new Saw in the cinema and that was the most horific satanic gruesome sadistic thing i had ever seen. I regretted seeing that movie a lot. It bothered me for a whole week badly.

Given your medial condition, do certain movies help or harm your well-being, and what do you think God would have you do about that? God helps us no matter how easily harmed we may be.

@Dario_M it sounds like you were able to recover by going to church and I'm glad to hear that.   I think you made a good decision to not watch those movies any more.

I stopped watching scary movies years ago, and more recently have stopped watching revenge movies, ones where the plot is about the good guy going on a quest to get revenge on the bad guy for doing something awful.  Like @rpn I'd rather not unnecessarily fill my mind with thoughts and images that tend to have a negative effect on me.  I DO NOT mean to imply that there is anything wrong with watching these sorts of movies; this is just a personal decision I have made.  Maybe I've become a wimp in my old age, or maybe I'm just lazy; it's easier for me if I don't make the mountain I have to climb steeper than it already is.

You are making a good choice. You might want to expand that type of thinking into other areas of your life if you haven’t already.

I have found with my fibromyalgia, which is really tied tightly with my emotional state, that it is wise to keep to things that leave me feeling positive…there may be some conflict in the shows I watch, but it needs to be quickly resolved and in a good way.  I have to avoid too realistic violence as well as over the top gore. Pretty violence that looks more like dancing and is obviously not realistic I can enjoy because I focus on the technique plus the usual with those (usually martial arts or fantasy films) is people seem remarkably resilient to pain, getting up over and over again from being hit in ways that would end up with people in real life in the hospital, so it doesn’t count in my head the way bombs and bullets do in war movies, especially realistic or historical ones where I know there were actually people suffering like that.  Anything that includes abuse or people enjoying torturing others gets fast forward through turned off completely.

With depression and fibromyalgia, if my emotions get involved—as they always do when there is a soundtrack (music instantly triggers emotion for me), I want stuff more for fun and relaxing and distraction if not feeling great…which means positive escapes shows.  I do like mysteries and police shows where puzzles are solved, but the good guys have to win and in a big way and I might have to skip over the crimes parts.

I don’t know if you think about your life this way, but I find it helpful even if tedious to judge everything I do before I do it on costs and benefits healthwise. I have done that for decades because of sleep issues and always regretted when I skipped it and ended up doing something with little payoff for high costs.  That’s even with little stuff like ‘do I do a puzzle now or will not finishing it and having to leave it out as clutter until I can get back to it be too annoying?’  Maybe I will read a book instead as that’s usually not a problem if I don’t finish it.

It just isn’t worth it not to make the effort to be aware of costs when getting overtired or stressed can deepen depression.  Depression has too much of an impact on the quality of life to treat without great respect and caution, if that makes sense.

Instead surrounding yourself with order and beauty and doing fun or pleasant activities may not get rid of the depression, but t helps with the balancing act.

We have started buying an inexpensive bouquet of flowers for the front hall, usually white daisies or mums as they are so bright, so it is the first thing I get to focus on when I come downstairs and it sets my mood up so much better than seeing clutter like sunglasses and hats that used to get dumped there. It lasts for about a week and a half.  In the past I would see it as a waste of money. Now I think about it like I would the cost of a good meal.  It is a feast for my eyes and so worth it.  Just little things like that can help a lot if they touch your heart or just feel right for you.

OTOH, the things that feel off, that have you wondering if you should be doing it, chances are it’s better not to do for whatever reason.

Yeah final destination is realistic. And sad because everyone dies a horible way.

Plus it gives the whole subject "death" a really negative layer or so. And disturbing.

War movies are also a thing oh my. 💀 i've seen also some of those. And aften those stories are based on a real happening. So when you watch it you just know that far in the past the storie really have happend in real life.

Yeah and i love doing those things. Like yesterday i took a bus to the sea. And there i hiked a bit and i was watching the sea, the horizon, and listening to the sounds of the waves. I like doing those things.

Sitting in a nice garden with lots of flowers can also help a lot. I used to had 2 gardens when i lived with my parents.

But after they've sold the house and moved to Portugal i've lost all of that. Now i life in an appartment together with my partner with no balcony. So i also buy myself some flowers or nice bouquet. Just to have the feeling of having some nature in my appartment.

Asian fantasy shows are my current escape, the Chinese ones are so predictable I am not the least bit anxious, no suspense.    They are all very beautiful, especially the clothing and sets.  But they like their tragic hero endings where someone has to die to save the universe…usually get reborn though.  Korean are the most interesting.

wat is fibromyalgia excatly?

They are not sure of the cause, but it’s an overactive pain system.  It’s like my body is using a megaphone to tell me something hurts.

My daughter also has it and anything more than a light touch hurts her.  Me, some days (not most of the time though thank goodness) I can drag my finger along rough cardboard and my touch sense is telling me it’s a laceration and I should be bleeding and my eyes can see the skin isn’t even marked.  There are tons of symptoms besides the pain, the brain fog and fatigue is pretty consistent for everyone, but other stuff varies widely.  Right now if something new pops up, I just assume it’s the Fibro.

I can’t get really angry or upset anymore or I feel like throwing up.  I am learning to be stoic, lol.

I prefer the subtitles.  The actors’ voices work so much better it’s worth the effort.  I have been watching them for years so now my memory has them talking English, lol, when I think of a scene.  The women’s voices can be annoying at times because they go for “cute” or ladylike, which is weak and hesitant or somehow nasal maybe (voices are not my thing, I am hopeless picking up languages and accents).  I have only been able to watch a few Japanese shows because the women’s voices are so stylized.  But the Chinese and Korean are going more and more with natural tones…or at least what comes across as such.

I don’t know if you can get the same shows on Netflix that I do here in the States, but they have a lot of Asian ones.  I also watch a lot of the less violent European detective shows, the ones that have a lot of humor and are pretty laid back.  Most of those are through Amazon subscription channels.

I'd say that watching or not watching a movie doesn't constitute a sin. It's important to realize what a sin is. In my view, a sin is doing a willful act that is contrary to God's commandments. So watching a movie or seeing a photo doesn't in itself constitute a sin. There's no commandment that covers it. Is it a sin to watch a film that portrays a bank robbery? The answer is obviously "No."  How about a murder? How can it be?

The possible problem with watching a film or viewing photographs that cause thoughts or desires to arise in our minds is that this can possibly lead us closer to performing willful acts that are contrary to God's laws. It is said that the easiest way to avoid falling off a cliff is to stay far away from that cliff's edge. Does watching a film about a sinful act make it easier for you to commit that sin yourself? If so, then you should avoid watching it. If not, then what's the problem?

I avoid watching horror films because I dislike them intensely. Others love them, for some reason. Whatever.
