Dirk Posted May 21, 2024 Posted May 21, 2024 Hello folks, thanks for having me. I am a Christian from another tradition, NOT hostile to the LDS church/Mormonism, I'm just here to learn (not try to convert anyone). I'm currently reading The Book of Mormon but the print is tiny and I struggle with it. I started using the audio book online but dislike the paragraph summaries and extra notes/comments. Anyone know where I can get a free large print B of M and/or where I can find audio without the summaries? Thank you, Dirk
bluebell Posted May 21, 2024 Posted May 21, 2024 Welcome! One option could be your local missionaries. You can also read the book online if that's helpful but I know a lot of people (me included) like reading actual books. If you'd like to go that route you can download the "gospel library" for free and access all the scriptures that way (and everything else the church has as well). There is also audio available through that app as well and it doesn't have any commentary or summaries included.
Dirk Posted May 21, 2024 Author Posted May 21, 2024 Thank you, I prefer to read a book like you, I retain more. I also like to highlight and underline. Prefer I reach out to Missionaries I'd like to read the Book of Mormon, maybe even the Doctrine & Covenants.

Here's a link that will allow you to request missionaries. https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/comeuntochrist/sg/form/request-missionary-visit
Dirk Posted May 21, 2024 Author Posted May 21, 2024 Would the 1830 edition be a better fit for me? No extra notes, larger print?
bluebell Posted May 21, 2024 Posted May 21, 2024 27 minutes ago, Dirk said: Would the 1830 edition be a better fit for me? No extra notes, larger print? I don't think so, because that edition has some changes and also has different formatting than the current one. Large print Books of Mormon are available and the missionaries should be able to help you get one. Those don't have any notes other than the typical footnotes that you find in most bibles and the chapter summaries that are at the beginning of each chapter. This link below should help you see what I mean and show what you'll find in a print copy. https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/bofm/1-ne/1?lang=eng https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/bofm/enos/1?lang=eng
rpn Posted May 21, 2024 Posted May 21, 2024 Not sure you'll find much without the chapter descriptions. (Though they aren't considered doctrinal, just info: skipping them entirely is fully okay.)
Pyreaux Posted May 21, 2024 Posted May 21, 2024 One Soft Covered Extra-large Triple Combination (Book of Mormon, Doctrine & Covenants, and Pearl of Great Price) $21.50 USD https://store.churchofjesuschrist.org/extra-large-triple-combination/5638699264.p?color=Extra+Large It is very big. It has cross-references, an index, maps, illustrations, and other study aids. They sell a regular BoMs for $2-4, they may even give it to you through the missionaries. Are you the Dirk from the Ward Radio chat on youtube?

Are you the Dirk from the Ward Radio chat on youtube? I'll see if I can find a Canadian supplier, shipping is often very high. I'm just Dirk, from no where Canada. I finished 1 Nephi today using audio, fascinating, how do you know when you have a testimony?

The Church usually covers shipping, though that just might be for church members….unless things have changed in 20 years (I never pay attention to the invoice when I order things from the Church, lol). They will likely ship from a Canadian warehouse again unless things have changed since I lived in Calgary and worked at a church themed bookstore (privately owned, but sold scriptures and such, marked up much higher than what the Church asked for them to cover their expenses, so I never bought Church Distribution from the bookstore even with my employee discount, lol, I picked up a few things about how the Church ran that side of their distribution). Booksellers tend to mark the scriptures and other Church Distribution products way up because the Church tries to keep prices close to, if not at cost or even below for its members and the sellers only get a 10% discount if they pick them up in SLC (my boss did as he was often down in Utah on business and family), otherwise same price for stores as for individuals. Calm Posted May 22, 2024 Posted May 22, 2024 (edited) I tried to test to see if shipping was applied to nonmembers in Canada, but it requires an account to be made. I am emailing them to ask instead. They may not answer till tomorrow though. We have some Canadian members on the board, they may also know. Edited May 22, 2024 by Calm
manol Posted May 22, 2024 Posted May 22, 2024 (edited) Welcome, Dirk! 1 hour ago, Dirk said: how do you know when you have a testimony? The very last chapter of the Book of Mormon contains this passage (Moroni 10:4): "And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost." So it would be something that you feel. Partway through the book, in the Book of Alma, Chapter 32, there is a more detailed description of what is pretty much the same basic process. Starting with verse 28: "Now, we will compare the word unto a seed. Now, if ye give place, that a seed may be planted in your heart, behold, if it be a true seed, or a good seed, if ye do not cast it out by your unbelief, that ye will resist the Spirit of the Lord, behold, it will begin to swell within your breasts; and when you feel these swelling motions, ye will begin to say within yourselves—It must needs be that this is a good seed, or that the word is good, for it beginneth to enlarge my soul; yea, it beginneth to enlighten my understanding, yea, it beginneth to be delicious to me." This explanation continues for the rest of the chapter, another fifteen or so verses. So briefly the idea is that you give it a fair chance and see (feel) how it sits with your soul. Shipping is 3.90$ in Canada (I am pretty sure he meant Canadian dollars), $3 in the US (US dollars of course). That would be the triple with the Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants (revelations mostly from the beginning era of the LDS Church), and Pearl of Great Price (additional scripture, quite a bit about some of the stories in Genesis) Edited May 22, 2024 by Calm
Pyreaux Posted May 22, 2024 Posted May 22, 2024 Extra Large is 11 X 8.5 Inches. A cheap option is an abundance of old used Leather "Quad"s which has a KJV Holy Bible with Book Of Mormon 7.5x5.5 Inches, if that is big enough.

It's just standard sized print you'd find in most books. But, the "Reader's Edition" by Grant Hardy was the way I was able to read the Book of Mormon cover-to-cover for the first time. It's an earlier version of the text (1922, I believe) so there will be some slight differences, but it doesn't have any summaries, and is formatted more like a book, rather than like scripture. The formatting made it so much easier to follow the overarching plot themes, etc., for me, and appreciate the text overall more than I ever did reading it piece-meal (or attempted front-to-cover) over the prior years. 2
Dirk Posted May 27, 2024 Author Posted May 27, 2024 Is the "1830 Book of Mormon Replica (Palmyra Collector's Edition)" an accepted edition of The Book of Mormon? I like the look of it I just want to make sure it isn't some weird variation of it.

But other than that it's fine. Edited May 27, 2024 by ZealouslyStriving
