A Saint Who Needs To Be Successful

Recommended Posts

I have been loosely involved with the Church for 4-5 years and wish I could start attending Church on a regular basis but my life has been preoccupied with guardianship living facility factors. Right now I am working to get to a better facility to start being able to actually go to Church on a regular basis. I have been to Church only a handful of times but it was the greatest joy and I have history with the Missionaries but they are too busy for me right now and PLUS I am kind of frustrated when we meet because I am stuck at the facility that I don’t want to be at. I am very creative and want to pursue writing. For instance I would like to write books for KDP or “Kindle Direct Publishing” and I am also a photographer and abstract artist. I want to use my talents but I have been out of the loop. What can I expect when it comes to inquiring for help with these things as I finally start to begin the Covenant Path? I have been through so much and my dream is to get married and start a family and become a great passionate who has success. All of this.

How close is your ward building?  The bishop might be able to find a family that is able to pick you up for Sunday meetings at least.  Are you under restriction for leaving or is it more not having transportation handy?

If you are a member of the church, there are resources. I never heard of any housing specialists, but there are employment specialists that might be able to direct you on where to apply your skills. It's a bit of a long process but I'm thinking it's a long-term solution. With an ideal job, you might have money to live on you own and get rides wherever. Step 1 is talking to the Elder's Quorum Leader or Bishop, tell him what you told us, mention an employment specialist if he doesn't know he can do that, the bishop will send a message, it can be weeks before they hear back and get in touch. You'll get weekly meetings, tell the specialist your skills and interests.

I cannot drive. I do not even dare go there when it comes to driving because I crashed and could have killed someone. I don’t mind getting a regular job but hopefully I could get rides and then I need a type of job that is entry level that pays well enough for a decent place. Otherwise I am interested in writing books for Amazon but I would need someone to walk me through because I’m more of a hands on kind of man. The place I am staying now will allow me to go to Church three months from now and that is only because of my participation in the program. I will need to get a taxi at first and then see if anyone can give me rides after that point. I appreciate all the information.

Any chance you live in Utah, because working at a Deseret Industries might be an option?

Wise choice on the no driving. I view a car as a lethal weapon and choose to drive pretty much on the same rules on whether I would be comfortable handling a gun (I have vestibular imbalances that make it unwise for me to drive).  It is very frustrating being dependent on others for transportation, but it’s worth keeping others safe from me on the road.  I couldn’t ever accept killing someone just because I want more freedom.

Have you checked out the bus routes in your area?  For work, not church.  You still might need a taxi for gaps where a bus doesn’t go, but it could save you money. Taxis could eat up a lot of your income.

I would definitely call the bishop and see if they have an employment specialist in the ward or stake that can help you.   They might know someone in the stake that is familiar with Amazon.

Good ideas! Also, curious if Deseret Industries is only in Utah. Hadn't thought of this before.

Looks like they’re in the Western US plus one in Texas (one marker may stand for more than one location):

Can you learn to ride a bike and keep your ear to the ground for one that someone is getting rid of?

The way you described your circumstances suggests you aren't in the US where most Deseret Industries are.   But other countries also have programs that include staffing retail second hand stores to get experience.  So if not a DI, then look for some other non-profit focused on helping the unskilled get jobs.   (If your congregation has an employment specialist, they may know the local resources.

I can get a bike. I live in Oregon in a city called Medford. I am not too sure about riding my bike to get to work each day. I am disabled and need to work from home. Very creative.

I bought an electric bike called Lectric. It's a decent price and sometimes people sell them on FB marketplace or wherever for a better cost. But there again, it might be a pain to make sure it's not stolen. Oh, I just read you are disabled, do you get disability? My dad was on that after being unable to work and he was in terrible pain from an old accident that caused severe scar tissue from the many surgeries. Best to you!

I don’t know if they have a program or not, but check with the local business schools or colleges to see if they have a service that helps new business owners and/or others.  My husband is an entrepreneurship professor and his students have started many businesses just by using what’s available around them already (it was a class assignment each year), some grew into actual businesses even.  They also worked as consultants with people who had ideas on how to get going with it.  It’s not exactly what you are looking for, but they may know of a service that is a better match.

But definitely make contact with the bishop for your area and then he can connect you with the ward’s employment specialist. I will talk later with my husband when he gets home to see if he has ideas.

I make around $900.00 a month on disability. I have been waiting for my benefits to get here. Still waiting. I will just have to wait. However, would it be out of the question to inquire with the Bishop about renting a room from a couple within the Church? It would be a major plus if I were to rent from a Church family opposed to someone on the outs.

It would be very appropriate.  If you have a reference or two as well as an information sheet with any special needs you might have listed, it could help speed up the process.

I also had a chat with my Mom tonight. She is my legal guardian. We applied for SSD benefits almost two years ago. I am eligible and have had them before. It is supposed to take under a year at most. Still nothing. Come to find out my Mom says that the person she talked with about my benefits initially during the time they were going through my benefits case load was put on hold because he or she quit soon after they took the case on. My Mom found all this out and so now we are trying to get it on track. In Jesus Name. Amen. All of this.
