Well, 2024 has arrived.

Happy New Year everyone.

Hopefully the buttheads in power around the world will be less buttheadish and we can have a bit more peace in the world this year.

And may they be more careful when they sit down!

I'm hearing from the authorities in 2024 that the borders are closed and we won't be allowed in.

What do we do now?

At last! I've been waiting for this year for about 72 years now. It's finally here.

I'd rate that hope as rather forlorn; I think it's more likely to get worse. But you get a point for your careful optimism!

It’ll be fine. Star Trek promised that Ireland will unify in 2024.

It will probably eventually happen, but not in 2024. The Irish Times in December reported about a survey:

"In 2023, 30 per cent in the North said they would vote in favour of unification (compared to 27 per cent in 2022) and 51 per cent to stay in the UK (compared to 50 per cent last year), with the remainder saying they either “don’t know” or would not vote."

The numbers show a slow uptick in those in favor of reunification.  Personally, I think NI should join the Republic, but I don't think it will happen anytime soon. From what I see of the Northern Ireland government (though I'm not extremely knowledgeable), they would benefit greatly from reunification -- as would the Republic. The UK wouldn't lose much in becoming the United Kingdom of Great Britain.

I think that Scotland is more likely to leave the UK sooner than Northern Ireland, and become independent, but they would regret it very quickly, I feel.

Not that we're trying to have a serious discussion about this, but here I am sitting in front of my keyboard and I thought "Why not pontificate?"
