smac97 Posted October 6, 2018 Posted October 6, 2018 Our bishop just got a letter from the First Presidency via email about new changes to the responsibilities of the Elders Quorum and Relief Society Presidents. Here are the basics: 1. EQP may be assigned to oversee member missionary work, temple and family history work in the ward (usually to be delegated to counselors in Elders Quorum presidency). 2. EQ Counselor will supervise Ward Mission Leader (who will be a Melchizedek Priesthood holder). 3. EQ Counselor will supervise ward temple and family history leader (who will be a Melchizedek Priesthood holder). 4. Relief Society Presidency can have a counselor assigned to help with member missionary work, and the other counselor assigned to help with ward temple and family history work. 5. Bishop coordinates "all aspects of the work of salvation in the ward council." Ward Council usually meets weekly, but may meet less frequently (our ward has already been doing this for a while). Thanks, -Smac 3

Thanks, -Smac I'm not seeing anything very significant here, but I have a few questions. So, is the Temple & Family History Leader a new position? I don't recall that calling. We had a Family History Center director, but that doesn't sound like the same thing. Is the new Family /Temple leader a member of the ward council? Having the EQ supervise Family History/temple sounds like the same stewardship the HPGL used to have. Or is there something more to it that I'm missing? The RS part seems very small. It sounds very similar to the old practice of having committees in quorums and RS. The biggest part is having the EQP oversee the ward mission and mission leader. Will the WML still be a part of the ward council? 1

Thanks, -Smac Before the Bishop oversees both member missionary, temple and family history and usually your Bishop and his counselors consider them important--but now there is another layer the ward mission leader and temple/family history leader will have to go through. I can see where this would be a problem if your EQ and RS counselors are not 'on the ball'. If they have little enthusiasm for member missionary work or for temple and family history(which can be the case) , it will be a problem getting them to pay attention to needs of these programs and it will seem that they are going over their heads if they try to get the Bishopric's attention.
ksfisher Posted October 6, 2018 Posted October 6, 2018 “Whether a bishop calls a ward mission leader and a ward temple and family history leader or the counselors in the elders quorum presidency fill those roles is up to the inspired direction of each bishop.” I think this takes into account that different units have differing strengths and abilities.

Thanks, -Smac Our Ward council meets more often now than it ever has in the past. I'd be open to meeting a little less frequently but I'm good with whatever. The other changes don't see to be that different, though it seems like the EQ and RS counselors will have to work together if they are all going to be over missionary work and temple work. That'll be interesting.

Our Ward Council spends 50% of our time talking to the missionaries and coordinating with the WML so that's interesting to me. 1

Exiled Posted October 6, 2018 Posted October 6, 2018 Sometimes making assignment and duty changes can invigorate an organization, as long as the members believe it. 1

The Ward Mission Leader is no longer part of the Ward Council. It will be interesting to see if the full time missionaries will still be invited to attend. If so, that really undercuts the WML. Thanks for sharing. Edited October 6, 2018 by HappyJackWagon

Reading the rumors on here earlier about this change that was where I got hung up. How can one member of the ward council oversee what had been a peer on the ward councul. This explains it.

Do you see it as a mistake that the WML is no longer part of the ward council?

That seems unnecessarily critical. The church has seen to leave that decision up to the inspiration of local bishops.

It does indicate that you think they belong there even though the church is now saying they are not part of that council. I think my (& KSFisher) reading of your comment was accurate even if you didn't intend for it to be critical.
