PM group reductions and the Temple

Recommended Posts

My parents had their HT's over last and one of them works for the PM group, he was saying there are going to be PM group reductions and the Church is hiring a private company. Which is fine for him as he is almost 65, so he's done and done. I was wondering and correct me I am wrong, but aren't the PM group responsible for the Temple? how would a non member company have anything to do with the inner workings of a Temple?

Are there no maintenance private companies operated by church members?    And what if the private company isn't LDS, but the contract requires they hire members with TR's?   Wouldn't that arrangement give such workers a lot more employment protections than working for the church would?  (Yes, it would.)   Outsourcing non-key services is a fundamental way entities stick to their actual missions.

(And, yes, it does seem a little weird, and I so very much hope it doesn't turn out to be a contract given to someone who knows someone, which family/friends of prominent and/or church leaders run.)

The Preventative maintenance group, nice way of saying Church Janitors and maintenance people!

I tell a lie they are now called the FM group, they used to be called the PM Group but now it's "Facilities Management"

I thought for a minute I had been downsized. Yes it is the FM group. Here we have the Church run management group but we regularly contract out any maintenance work that cannot be done by members on cleaning days . Major snow removal, plumbing and electrical, HVAC, carpet replacement etc. When the temples are renovated all kinds of firms contract the work. There may be stipulations as to when work can be done ( no Sundays etc. ) and probably some restrictions on personal behavior on site. I'm reasonably sure any maintenance work inside an active temple would have to be done by TR holding people.

I would hope that I would not have to call some place in Utah to get a toilet fixed 1000 miles away.

The Atlanta temple has a dedicated maintenance engineer on-site.   Also, with the temple renovation, major systems were made  accessible from the outside, no TR required.

The FM unit that services our ward recently replaced the padding on all the pews.  Did a great job in just two days.  Probably contracted it out.

I will contact a friend and ask, he PM for a Utah Temple. But, my guess is the company will only use recommend holders.

My dad had an upholstery shop. He bid on a number of church pews and choir seats and we worked together on several.

One church was a little ways away. Everything was cut out and ready and our family went up and did the work. That night we spent the night in the church somewhere.

Those jobs my dad specifically earmarked for missions for his kids.

Temples have their own employees managed by the temple recorder, including laundry and cafeteria workers, security staff, and maintenance workers and office staff.

I could be wrong but I do not think the PM group is involved and I know for a fact that there are PM group folks who do not have recommends- or at least should not have.  ;)

This possibly does not apply to smaller temples.  I am pretty sure about this but not positive.  It would be very easy to find out however.

From what I have heard you are correct on the reduction but I have also heard that the church will keep some FM's and the temple would be on the list of what they keep.

The Church is cutting back drastically on the FM groups, with FM employees who remain being over many more buildings in a larger area than before. This means that stakes are supposed to repair what they can, because there is a longer wait time and they can only do so much with limited personnel and resources. Major things will still go through FM.

In a way, it's good, because we are authorized to take care of what we can. Filing a request on "FIR" took a long time as it was, and we can just take care of plumbing, carpentry, etc. things with people and resources in our stake.
