Thought vlad was baptised, wondering if I would be fair game so how does that work? Does Joseph Smith and the prophets fight the other pantheon of gods for souls? Seriously how does that work? I'd imagine vlad would not be happy. Hanging out with Hinkley would be neat, always liked him. 1

We believe that Jesus Christ gave the command that to enter into the Kingdom of Heaven everyone was required to be baptized. Given that baptism is an earthly ordinance what happens to everyone that did not have a chance to be baptized? Are they all condemned because they were not born where baptisms by one in authority could be done? We believe that God set up a path that all may receive the ordinance. We strive to do genealogy for all our ancestors. Once we find a name(s) those names can be taken to the temple and all their salvific ordinances may be completed on their behalf. They can be baptized, receive the priesthood, and be sealed to their spouse by living persons. The greatest example of doing work for those who are dead is the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his resurrection. He died that we might live. We stand in the place of our ancestors so that they may be saved. The individual receiving these ordinances may reject them or accept them. They remain the only person capable of accepting the work or rejecting it - in other words, they do not lose their free agency. There are no other Gods to fight with over any soul - God the Father is and will always be our only God in the same way that Jesus will always be our Savior, Lord, and Master. Hope this helps. It may be strange, but I have never thought of the Devil being a god. However, I can logically get there, but it is not generally a thought I have about him. If I had to answer what is he then I may turn to a real cop-out and say he was a demi-god. He is not responsible for having created anything; he fights and has resisted his God for a very long time; and he does not currently offer any real concept of salvation for his followers other than those statements made to deceive.

Satan undoubtedly feels that he is powerful and influential, and no one can deny that fact. He also undoubtedly feels that his way was the right way, and has been deeply humiliated in the process. Yet his role is essential in both liturgical and real terms, and he knows that. For there must needs be opposition. Where would we be without real choices? Could we really do without him?

His feelings are pretty irrelevant to me; regardless, God uses him to fulfill his own purposes and is the opposition to all that God does thereby giving us the choice between good and evil. I think we think highly alike on this part of the equation.

That is what I was tripping over - the ancient Near Eastern sense of who/what god was. In the LDS sense Jesus was a God before he ever came to earth - thus he had not fulfilled the essential steps that we go through and are made one with God because of his eventual atonement. As I have thought more about it I would probably say his godhood was arrested with no hope of further progress on the path to godhood. 1

So, the question becomes, are the Mormons right about baptism?

If I end up in Volksvanger i'm curious how it would work, I'd be with my folk, my kind in the great halls, would a mormon baptism = total recall? While i'm a cultural christian there's always that nagging voice that won't shut up. Imagine St. Boniface or some other Saint who put up with the murderous saxons and was probably as fiesty, if not more so than they were. If they are, I want to hang out with Hinkley, He's probably one of my favorite mormons. I just want to talk to him. Funny, he's right up there with Bishop Sheen as far as favorite people go. That or in a few days see news reports of some guy with a wolf head mask running around nude scaring random people.

You'd probably enjoy Robert Heinlein's novel "Job: a Comedy of Justice". It's not very reverent towards religion in general, or Evangelical Christianity in particular, but it's kind of a fun romp. Includes supporting characters like Loki, Satan, Jehovah and Odin. I read it once many, many years ago, and barely remember the plot any longer. I should probably read it again. 1
