JLHPROF Posted August 3, 2017 Posted August 3, 2017 Hey guys, I was asked to provide some gospel related references to situations where God has given his children what they asked for, even when it wasn't the right thing to ask. Some examples so far would be Joseph Smith and the 116 pages and when Samuel was asked to provide a King in the OT. Any other similar examples spring to mind? Thanks!

Israel's repeated desires for a King, Gid finally giving it to very bad circumstances with their first three. Same in the BoM, will some different plots.

Who prayed for the priesthood ban to be put in place? 59 minutes ago, HappyJackWagon said: Joseph Smith and polygamy Joseph prayed about polygamy, not for polygamy. And frankly, ending polygamy (the Manifesto) would be a better example. Are there no other examples in Church history or scriptures where God said no, the people said we want it, so God said "fine, do what you want and enjoy the consequences"? Maybe Adam and Eve? HappyJackWagon Posted August 3, 2017 Posted August 3, 2017 It's not terribly faith promoting for a prophet to keep a record of asking for something that is wrong, and then pestering God enough that God finally relents so that the prophet gets his way. I can see why there wouldn't be very many stories like that recorded in scripture.

Are there more? Edited August 3, 2017 by JLHPROF

I truly hope you don't believe Brigham got down on his knees and said "please Lord, please may we ban the negro from holding the priesthood for a century or so". I sincerely doubt he wearied the Lord on this until the Lord said "fine, they're banned, ok". 1
strappinglad Posted August 4, 2017 Posted August 4, 2017 There is the old saying , " give a man enough rope and he will hang himself." The story of Jonah and Baalim(?) come to mind. Not what you are looking for exactly but kinda? Even Peter was reluctant to follow the admonition to take the gospel to the Gentiles. Instead of finding such stories NOT faith promoting, I see them as honest views of very human prophets and leaders. It gives me hope not despair . 1

Nephi says the Jews desired things they could not understand and God obliged them. When God told Moses he would wipe out the children of Israel and let Moses raise up a new people Moses begged him not to. Think of the problems that could have been avoided if Israel were reduced to one tribe. When Elisha was walking along and some guys started calling on bald guys to "go up" God had two two bald bears go up all over them. Samson prayed for strength to commit a murder-suicide and God granted it. That is all I can think of off the top of my head. 2

No, sincere thanks actually. I didn't look to see who was speaking. That verse was a good example of what I was referring to no matter who was speaking. 1

Bernard Gui Posted August 5, 2017 Posted August 5, 2017 Would the story of David McKay and his brother traveling to Idaho to help assist flood victims count?

On a happirr note, Spencer Kimball "pestered" God to lift the priesthood ban as well as to find out as much about it as possible. To the latter he also "pestered" church leaders but I'd say the end result was good. Edited August 5, 2017 by Darren10
