I think the lights help keep people awake during the meeting. When we watch a stake conference broadcast and they dim the lights--it feels like nap time. 😀

I don't care for Elder Bednar's insistence on calling our meetings "revelatory experiences." That's even more Orwellian and euphemistic.

I agree about "revelatory experiences". Not only is it an overly optimistic euphemism but it's largely inaccurate.

However, there are many gatherings of people that aren't called "meetings". Meetings sounds very formal and unwelcoming.

I think a lot of that is a reflection of how much work getting to church is, especially when you have kids.  You have to get up early on a Sunday, get all the kids and yourself ready, in dresses and white shirts and ties (which sometimes includes ironing) and then get everyone in winter coats and shoes and drive to the church while looking forward to wrangling children during the first hour at least.

On top of all of that, if you have a calling which includes teaching on Sunday, you also have to go over last minute preps for that and face the stress and anxiety that the calling implies, even for the well prepared.

Compare all of that to being able to sleep in, stay in your jammies all day, and be inside all snuggly warm when it's a blizzard outside.  It's not at all surprising that people would be excited for an an unexpected snow day.m

I do like how other Churches sometimes call their main meeting room the "sanctuary".  I wouldn't object if that caught on.

That makes me think of Quasimodo, up on the choir seats, bellowing, "Sanctuary!"  

How about "rostrum?" It's on all of our chapel signs, but I don't know anyone who calls anything a "rostrum." It's one of those funny-sounding words, too.

Rostrum sounds way better than Rameumptom and much shorter to put on a sign . Ba da ching

The pews are always padded these days...they actually hurt more than the wood ones that conform to the body shape a bit better.

Shop around for the right pad.  Online pads aren't too expensive.  I have tried a dozen and the one that works the best is gel, but does not have the hole for the tail bone cut out.  It actually works better to have soft support.

we don't get that!!!!!!!!!!!! we have this dimly lit chapel with one broken fan and the PM group folks apparently are too afraid to use a ladder to fix it, so we suffer in the heat sometimes

Where I grew up...there was just no other place to go unless you wanted to feed the chickens or go out and count cows..  There were times when a nice horseback ride would have filled my spiritual needs.
