No protests in evidence at my ward today, thankfully.

None at my ward today as I expected.

I suspect this is only in certain wards in Utah and California - most don't even know this group exists and are not keen on promoting division among body of Christ.

I would have no interest in attending an event ostensibly billed as a Church "fireside" that even puts the matter up for debate.

Whatever.  I expected this from you so I am not surprised.  I just don't understand why the church dedicates time and money on prop 8..make policies called revelation..and then don't want to talk about it.  Funny thing but not surprised.

Guess what? Mine is in California. Perhaps some San Francisco wards?  I am sure most here were completely unaware of it. Like I said earlier we just don't pay any attention to that sort of activity here.

This group is very, very small relative to the entire membership.  They have their megaphone on social media and it gives them the appearance that people support them; however, they are and will remain a very small group.  The vast majority of the saints recognize that each of us is a sinner and it serves no purpose to aggrandize the favorability of one sin over all others.  More importantly, we must learn to love all people regardless of their sins.  Wearing a pin accepts the agenda of those who are not prophets or apostles.  Their complete agenda is unknown and is not based on the sure foundation that Jesus Christ instituted.

no that is your opinion. I may agree we can do more, but I dont agree that the policy or other actions taken communicate a lack of love or the acceptability of being anything less than charitable to all.

I didn't say anything about the policy.  I only said that we haven't, as a church, reached the point where we are sufficiently loving and supportive of our LGBT youth.  Do you disagree?

You are forgetting that there would also be discussed the support of the policy

Jeanne -- I think Scott's response is very consistent with his view of the Church's paradigm wherein the Brethren put forth doctrine/policy/methodology, never in error, and the members follow without question.

A question I have is how do we know who they are? For most of them I would say only their family and close friends might know, otherwise they are not wiling to let others know, so we can love and support them like our leaders have told us. But of course you can't make the members love and support them; that has to come from within.  What more can "the church" do that doesn't compromise the direction and revelation we have received from God?

In many cases, we can't know.  I think that's one of the reasons for the Rainbow Initiative... It identifies people who are supportive and safe to LGBT persons who otherwise might continue feeling isolated.

I am pretty fatigued with the constant barrage of news on gays, the gay agenda, gay marriage, blah, blah, blah.  We are talking about less than 2% of the population, but this group is talked about as if they are over 50% of the population....

I intensely dislike Trump, but when I observe the same type of Group Think activists spitting upon, throwing eggs at, shouting/screaming obscenities at individuals for no other reason than they support Trump...

Amen to all of this.  It seems that the media has focused more on the LGBT issue over the last 5 years than the last 50 years combined.  The Church also has spent too much time on it.  From gay marriage, to gay scout leaders, to children of gay parents, ect.  I am tired of hearing about it.  Meanwhile more important issues in the Church like prescription drug abuse is largely ignored.

I am not a big Trump supporter but if these protesters continue, I will have to vote for Trump.  When a bunch of thugs assault others and carry around flags of other nations, that just motivates me to vote for the person they oppose because I detest these people so much.

I saw no ribbons today. I am tired of the whole ribbon thing.  I have thought about going on a mountain and creating a ribbon of power.  One ribbon to rule over all other ribbons.  For me, that would be a precious ribbon.

None in mine either; I would have been very surprised had there been any.

But I live very near a platform station for our local light-rail system, TRAX.

While walking to Church this morning, I saw man coming to the train platform, bare-chested, orange mohawk, wearing short shorts under tiny figure-skater skirt. Everything about his appearance was designed to draw attention to him. I knew intuitively he was headed up to Salt Lake to be in the annual gay pride parade, typically a calculated, in-your-face spectacle, some of it bordering on the obscene.

I thought about the radical contrast in our respective destinations. Then I thought about this wear-a-rainbow-ribbon-to-church thing, and one word came to mind: encroachment. Whatever the stated immediate goals, that is the long-range objective. They really are trying to change the Church from within, as the blogger said.

It's no mere coincidence their Sunday ribbon campaign was timed to coincide with the parade in Salt Lake.

"Encroachment" is a good characterization.

But why encroach in the SLC  LDS Church when there is the gay-friendly RLDS/Community of Christ?

Yes, I'd love to see us resolve the LGBT issues and move on to much more important and difficult subjects:

Human trafficking

Poverty/Hunger/Disease

Access to clean water

Educational issues in Third World countries

Etc.

I don't choose my Church/religion/faith community solely on its approach to homosexuality.

The Church is not supposed to be a "safe place". It is supposed to be a place where the Lord's sheep are separated from Satan's goats.

Aslan is a good King.

But He is not tame.

You want to loot the assets of the LDS Church in order to pursue leftist social agendas peripheral to the Gospel.

Because the faith community willing to accommodate such agendas is a shell of itself and lacks such resources.

I just don't think enough people are really willing to get involved in such an action to make much of a difference. Is a gay person who sees someone wearing a ribbon really going to be any better off? They might think, "well that's nice, now what?" Individual families and friends and maybe even Bishops are really the ones who have to help them feel love and supported by the things they do and say to them.

If it had to be a ribbon I think it was a poor choice to choose a rainbow; because to many it would most likely represent the gay agenda in general, which is too much of a turn-off for many church members.

And it is only right that the “championed” realize their issue is in the way of more important issues. Do you think they can’t see through this? This is why Elder Bednar answered the question the way he did!

What could the problem be?  If it helps only one person not commit suicide, isn't that enough, does it hurt anybody?

I have no interested in looting the assets of the Church.  And I absolutely have no interest in pursuing "leftist social agendas peripheral to the Gospel".

The gay youth I've worked with would have been positively impacted by knowing that there was someone willing to make the first gesture toward more openness.  And the wearing of the ribbon wasn't targeted at church members who think it represents the "gay agenda", it was for LGBT members who are likely to see it in an entirely different light.

Any word on how successful the protest was?  There was nothing in my ward in Layton.

I didn't attend my ward today because I was attending/teaching at our local senior center.  But I did notice lots of pics of rainbow ribbon clad members on facebook.
