VideoGameJunkie Posted March 27, 2016 Posted March 27, 2016 Peter was one of the great Apostles loved by Jesus and was so devoted by the end of his life that he was crucified upside down for what he believed in. But what I like him for the most was how human he was during Christ's ministry and how he made mistakes like you and I might make. It's rare to see an Apostles mistakes mentioned in scripture, but in the New Testament it mentions how Peter began to doubt when he was on the water and started sinking, or when he chopped off the guys ear in the garden, or when he denied Christ 3 times. I like how the scriptures show he was human and not some super perfect apostle like so many other figures in scriptures seem to be. What are your thoughts on Peter and his mistakes before Christ and then going on to do great things. 1
Traela Posted March 27, 2016 Posted March 27, 2016 All of Peter's mistakes start with him being the most devoted and enthusiastic of the apostles. He was the only one to even try to walk on water. He was the only one to follow as far as the courtyard of the Sanhedrin. Even cutting off the soldier's ear was from wanting to protect Jesus. I think his character most clearly comes through when Jesus was washing the apostles' feet: he is absolutely appalled at the idea, then when Jesus tells him it's necessary, he wants his hands and head washed too. 2

Agreed. Peter had passion.
Blah Posted March 27, 2016 Posted March 27, 2016 I taught NT in Sunday School several years ago. Suffice it to say I gained such respect for Simon Peter I named my son after him. 1
UtahTexan Posted March 28, 2016 Posted March 28, 2016 The first leader of the Church after Christ ascended. He was strong, with weaknesses...he grew in the faith and in his own recognition of who he was. 1

It isn't only Simon Bar Jona (Peter) who is portrayed in the NT realistically and with feet of clay. The entire Bible is filled with one very human, fallible hero after another. Only Jesus lacks those faults, and (thankfully) he is very patient with us. Love suffereth long and is kind. 8

This is true. One of the first courses I took in Bible College was the book of Genesis. When you study the lives of biblical heroes like Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob you find that they all had periods of weakness and failure. My pastor likes to say that the Bible paints the picture warts and all.
strappinglad Posted March 28, 2016 Posted March 28, 2016 It is an interesting coincidence: Dwayne " The Rock " Johnson and Peter " the rock ' Johnson ( Bar Jonah ) Peter reminds me of Joseph Smith. He came from a lowly background with not much formal training and was left to head up a group of men , some of who were better trained. Along comes Paul ( Sidney ?) and the inevitable clash of opinion.
Duncan Posted March 28, 2016 Posted March 28, 2016 I can't imagine following the Saviour! Pretty big shoes to fill! He and the Apostles had to preach Jesus to people who clearly rejected him, would not want that calling

That is why Christ made him the head. Same reason Brigham ended up the head. In fact same reason Christ was named Savior instead of Lucifer. Complete obedience to their priesthood head.
thesometimesaint Posted March 28, 2016 Posted March 28, 2016 A great man who lead the early Church. 1
The Nehor Posted March 28, 2016 Posted March 28, 2016 One of those spiritual giants that show up about once a millenia.
Avatar4321 Posted March 29, 2016 Posted March 29, 2016 I love Peter. I'm always amazed at how example. We would do well to remember the saviors admonition to him "when thou art converted strengthen thy brethren"
Maedros Posted March 29, 2016 Posted March 29, 2016 (edited) A very zealous man for sure - when he fully understood the cause: he led the charge fearlessly. Another thought that comes to mind when considering Peter is the controversy in meaning of Matthew 16:18: " And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it" 1. The Church was built through the 'rock' that was his character (however the gates of hell prevailed against him and he was murdered and the Church destroyed) 2. The Church was built on the rock of his testimony of Christ (the testimony of Jesus Christ as the Son of God is the 'rock' upon which the Church is built John 17:3) 3. The Church was built on the apostle's profession of Christ by divine revelation (the revelation of prophets and apostles is the rock upon which the Church was built - but the gates of hell prevailed against them and the church fell anyway) It seems to me that no. 2 is the best explanation since the gates of hell never prevailed against the belief in and testimony of Christ - in fact it was because men continued to teach and testify of Christ that laid the foundation for the restored Church and put explanation 3 into effect. Just a thought.. Edited March 29, 2016 by Maedros
