flameburns623 Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 (edited) I went looking for a Facebook page for this board and found Bill Reel's page. After listening to a podcast discussion between humself and Cathy Escobar; as well as a podcast of Mr. Reel's testimony, I did a Google and found an interview of Mr. Reel on what I think is a separate program, called "Mormon Stories". In some ways these two sets of broadcasters (if they are separate entities) seem as if they somewhat embrace an approach to believing which I was wrestling with at the time I resigned Mormonism. One which I wrestle with somewhat yet today, BTW. There don't seem to be good wiki-like articles or other resources to summarize who/what these folks are. Can anyone help? Thanks! Bill Reel claims to be a believing Mormon, though in my opinion, he is often more critical of the church than makes me personally comfortable. But it doesn't matter what I think anyway. We have some history so I am hardly objective. John Dehlin has recently been excommunicated and that fact has been publicized extensively. Arguably he used his excommunication to bring himself more publicity to advance his site. It is very likely that Bill will show up here soon. He posts here as "ReelMormon" or something similar as I recall. Every person who hangs out here probably has an opinion on these folks- so sit back and bring on the popcorn. 1
JulieM Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 (edited) I think Bill Reel was a Bishop when he first started posting here. My impression of him is that he is very honest and kind, but blunt. He has spent a lot of time helping people who are experiencing a faith crisis and it seems he may be having his own now, but I'm not sure about that. I haven't seen him post here for awhile, so hopefully he will see this and respond himself. And who is John Dehlin and Mormon Stories? Whew. I'll let someone else try to answer that better than I can. I can't figure that guy out! He was in the church, then out, then in and out, and now he's been ex'd. Hard to follow and know what he's doing now. Edited March 2, 2016 by JulieM 2

No wish to start any brush 🔥. Never heard of Dehlin till I googled him based on the cited post. Poked around on their sites. Reel looks more interesting than Dehlin but we'll see. Hit the Facebook "follow" button on Reel and Dehlin and some other fellow who featured prominently for some kind of open letter he wrote. He turns out to be Hard of Hearing, as am I. We may have that and Mormonism and not one other blessed thing in cimmon. Not real fond of strictly Mormon-bashing stuff so if any of threse characters show themselves mainly interested in peeing in the Sacrament water, I know where the "unfollow" button is. Unless Facebook does another of their unending updates and rearrange things again. Thanks for the feedback. Edited March 2, 2016 by flameburns623

I think you have a handle now on who these two individuals are - Bill Reel is a member of the Church and Dehlin has been excommunicated. These two human brothers have deal with faith crises and responded to the challenges of having, maintaining faith in different ways. I just recognized that you have become Catholic - I hope you have now found a home that feeds you spiritually. Welcome to the Board. We have a few other Catholics that post here and several of us used to post on the Catholic board. Peace, 2

And oh BTW: ifyou're referring in your post to the Catholic Answers board, that is one of several I visit. Wave if you stop by and see me. Edited March 2, 2016 by flameburns623 Addendum.

I know Bill personally. He's a convert who became a bishop at a relatively young age in my stake. He's very focused on faith crises, inoculation of members, and keeping people in the church if at all possible ... while at the same time taking fairly liberal stances such as women's ordination and finding ways to include gays in the gospel plan as they are. He's been interviewed twice by Dehlin (to my knowledge) - once when he was a bishop and then more recently after he was dropped from FAIR (possibly due to his vocal criticism of the recent church policy on children of gay couples). Bill runs a pretty good podcast himself. He currently lives near St. George, Utah. 1

I'm beyond "conservative" in my sociopolitical views, but I don't engage often on such matters. So we'll see how well I like his stuff over time.

I could never make sense of it, so here I am. I used to post on Catholic answers, but no more. I got tired of getting sprayed with holy water and upheld crucifixes and yells of "Abomination!". It was fun at first, but I got better! 2

It was fun...though they allow Catholics to say whatever they want and keep everyone else on a short leash. I was banned when I answered on of THEIR threads questioning the Apostasy. They disliked my answer. Since I was once a vocal Catholic there, they are tad bothered by my conversion.....one member over there informed me they are afraid of me. I find that hard to believe...but comical. 3

You don't know Bill Nye the Science Guy? He had a science TV show in the 1990s and now he goes around debating creationists with science. He recently tried to debunk the story of Noahs Ark.
flameburns623 Posted March 3, 2016 Author Posted March 3, 2016 By the way, does anyone know who does the contemporary version of "Lead Kindly Light" which is being used as into music on "Mormon Stories"? I've had Sherul Crow and Kid Rock's performance of "Picture" stuck in my head for days. I wake up humming it. I hum it while driving. I hum it during commercial breaks. I need to reset thr jukebox in my brain. "Lead Kindly Light" would be a nice change.

I mostly spent the 1990's working and sleeping. Burned through one marriage, fell into inactivity in the LDS Church, and missed a lot of pop culture.

Popular Post Calm Posted March 3, 2016 Popular Post Posted March 3, 2016 I don't know. It seems somewhat malicious to portray church leadership as equivalent to violently abusive fathers, including for visual impact a guy with a black eye. 5

I think he's certainly blunt and sometimes you gets raw outburst of emotion that he'll later reel in (no pun intended). I don't think he's the world's best communicator and I think he sometimes says or does things he might later regret (don't we all) but what I meant was that I don't think he's got a hidden agenda or is malicious in being a snake in the grass. It depends on your definition of "malice" I suppose. 2
