consiglieri Posted January 7, 2016 Posted January 7, 2016 I listened to the podcast interview with FAIRMormon chairperson John Lynch the other night. http://blog.fairmormon.org/2015/12/10/purposemission/ I was surprised to hear him say that the LDS Church has occasionally asked FAIRMormon for internet posting information on certain unnamed persons of interest. And that FAIRMormon happily complied with their request. It sounds to me like FAIRMormon is at the beck and call of Church leaders to help them spy on members. Do I have that about right? All the Best! --Consiglieri
The Nehor Posted January 7, 2016 Posted January 7, 2016 He will need to be disciplined for that lapse in security. Carry on everyone. No one here is monitoring all of you and passing the information on and if there were such a person it would not be me. 2

I think it slipped out while he was busy patting himself on the back for being on the Bat-Phone from Salt Lake.

Tinfoil hats, anyone? Nice try, Scott. It appears you are conceding that FAIRMormon helps the LDS Church gather material for member dossiers. This would, of course, be directly connected with the disingenuously named Strengthening Church Members Committee. That would be the Committee the Church doesn't want people to know about. Including a certain BBC reporter.
consiglieri Posted January 7, 2016 Author Posted January 7, 2016 And one wonders whether FAIRMormon helped gather material for John Dehlin's stake president for use in his excommunication. That would be the material his stake president referenced which he obviously didn't read. It obviously came from somewhere into the hands of the stake president. And a similar thing happened with Rock Waterman, as I recall. Is there any representative of FAIRMormon who would like to answer these questions? Mr. Lynch, perhaps?

Did the SP get info from Fair Mormon???
Popular Post bluebell Posted January 7, 2016 Popular Post Posted January 7, 2016 If its public boards and stuff then it's not spying. It's consolidating information that's already available. 7

I don't know what FairMormon does in this regard any more than you do. I'm just saying it's overwrought nonsense to label as spying the act of reading or hearing and making note of what people say on publicly accessible Internet sites. Accountability is the price one pays for speaking out or writing in public. And if you're going to publicly disparage the Church of Jesus Christ, you ought to be accountable for it. Are you opposed to accountability? Quote Including a certain BBC reporter. I don't know what you're alluding to with this, so I won't bother responding to it. Edited January 7, 2016 by Scott Lloyd 4

Calm Posted January 7, 2016 Posted January 7, 2016 (edited) People write into FairMormon quite often asking "have you heard of this person, this website, this video, this book? He/she is a critic/defender of the Church". Sometimes these requests are even from nonmembers from what I can tell. Some of FM are friends of church leaders (sometimes they ask for a relative or friend) and will relay the same request for information for them. And if we haven't heard of them, we use our ultimate spy device, google, to provide them with info if it is connected to apologetics. I don't know of anytime where FM sent stuff to someone's local church leader after a request. I don't know of anytime where FM as an organization sent info without being asked. It is possible that someone as an individual did since I don't have access to personal email accounts, but no one has made that claim that I remember. We have some good googlers, such as myself but if you've seen my work here for requests, you've seen my work there for requests. Edited January 7, 2016 by Calm 2
The Nehor Posted January 7, 2016 Posted January 7, 2016 Yeah, I do not see this as menacing. Consig is taking a page out of a certain poster from the board that must not be named with this kind of saying nothing but implying evil intent throughout.
Scott Lloyd Posted January 7, 2016 Posted January 7, 2016 So take note people: If you are a leader in the Church on any level, you give up your right to use an Internet search engine. Or some would appear to believe that. 3

The association with FM was dropped years ago. A very few members of FM are also posters here these days, though less and less it seems. Myself and Juliann are the only regulars that come to mind. WikiWonka, Neal R and a few others post every couple of months or so, iirc. Edited January 8, 2016 by Calm

I'm not saying Greg said anything though! i hope you are joking. Our service is confidential. We may direct people to contact their bishop if they ask us questions that are inappropriate for us to answer, but we do not ever contact anyone ourselves. If someone were to do so, they would be booted from FM. The only exception that might be considered if it were to ever happen is if someone wrote in talking suicide or violence to others.
