According to Joseph Smith in D&C 137 the streets of the Celestial Kingdom are paved with gold. In Kim Rives NDE she said she passed a beautiful meadow with flowers of all bright beautiful colors and passed by 2 other cities which varied in glory and came to a 3rd city possibly representing the Celestial Kingdom where she said the streets were made of gold and the buildings had diamonds encrusted in them. In Revelation, John sees the throne of Christ made of sapphire blue and rubys and amber gold with a rainbow surrounding the throne. The whole point I'm getting at is from all these people's experiences it seems that heaven is decked out in materialistic materials. Is that how you hope heaven is or do you have a different image in your mind when you think of the Celestial Kingdom or heaven in general? I imagine my idea of heaven like the Garden of Eden, a paradise of nature, yet we're told by people that heaven has cities and buildings like on earth, only celestialized. So to get to my thread title question, what do you hope heaven looks like in appearance and does diamond encrusted buildings or streets paved with gold or rainbows around Christ's throne matter to you?
VideoGameJunkie Posted December 3, 2015 Author Posted December 3, 2015 I'm just saying it seems ironic that in scriptures people are chastised for having great wealth and gold and silver and precious materials and told to put up treasures in heaven, where it appears heaven is made out of great riches and materialistic objects. 1
JAHS Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 When I was a kid my dad and mom were having an argument on what heaven was like. He was sure we would be able to go skiing in heaven. Mom disagreed. He said, "Well if there is no skiing then I would rather go to Hell". I hope he's right.

There is that show "America Unearthed" and that guy has all these ideas about things but proves not much of anything, so it's a disappointing show and "Unsolved Mysteries" like whatever happened to all of that scene? I want to know about Hoffa, Loch Ness, how do you get the Caramilk into a Caramilk bar?
Jeanne Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 Well streets of gold and thrones of saffires and rubies sounds way too gaudy for me..not my style. I like the idea that all yours senses are enhanced and nature is colorful and music is like no other. Peaceful. I just want to find some answers without having to go to google..and not pay taxes and no insurances to buy...! Love Jeremy's idea above. Those pics are beautiful..beats gold all to heck!! 1

I expect that that is instead an attempt to convey beauty surpassing normal understanding. That the place is so alive with color and light that gems and untarnishable and unrusting gold are as close as they can to describing it. Though the scenery will be nice heaven is more about unlocking the key to your desires. The things you have yearned for your whole life but cannot put into words. The desires that make you feel sublime joy just to crave but you cannot even articulate entirely what they are. It is to be made whole. To triumph over all your enemies both external and internal. To be drenched in joy where the Savior will somehow through the atonement wipe away all our tears and wounds from this life no matter how severe and crippling. It will be wonderful. It will be fun. As to whether or not you are allowed to ski.......one of the advantages of becoming a deity is not having to ask permission. If you want to ski make a planet that is one titanic mountain and ski down it. I am planning to ride a wave around an entire planet, dance in an exploding star, and ride a dinosaur just because I can. To be human is to desire. Our heaven is not the nirvana of the Buddhists where we sink into mindless contentment and no longer want things. I could be wrong and my plans for the afterlife will seem puerile when I get there but that is only because there will be stuff that is much much better and not because I will be bored of everything. To be exalted is to truly live. That feeling of exuberance that makes you want to run or to dance or to play a game or ride a roller coaster or strap on a jet pack and go flying will be magnified. If I believed heaven was an eternal sacrament meeting or like our pictures of heaven where everyone seems to be milling about in white robes engaging in small talk in some eternal extended family picnic I think I would abandon the gospel tomorrow as that kind of "happiness" is not for me and consider my other options....like maybe hookers and nose candy. 6

No, I am hoping he's right about there being skiing in heaven. His argument was that since God created everything spiritually before physically, there must be skiing in heaven. Not sure about the logic of that though.

Well Duncan if you want to know about the Loch Ness monster just watch an old episode of South Park where Chef's parents say he always asks for about tree fiddy. Or $3.50. But maybe not that many people on this board are familiar with South Park. 1

I'd like a house with a large boat dock on a protected inland waterway with a deep channel to the ocean and a space ship in my backyard capable of FTL so we can visit all of God's worlds. and it would NEVER be cold. ERayR Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 I am reminded of the story I heard about a rich man who was allowed to take whatever he wanted to heaven with him. When he got to the gates the angles were inspecting his bags and they asked him why of all the things he could have brought he chose to bring pavement. I think that all the descriptions of opulence are simply attempts at describing its glory. I do picture heaven as a place of peace and tranquility, a place of gigantic family gatherings, a place where I can learn and get answers.

IMHO there will be no snow in the Celestial Kingdom. However, it would be a short hop, skip and a warp speed jump to the planet Snowbird.

Hanging out with Jesus in perfect harmony because God's Spirit flows between and binds us. (You know that as a non-Mormon, I'd have to bring the Trinity into my picture of heavenly perfection. ) (For a really interesting view of the Trinity, check out who's living in the shack, in The Shack by William Paul Young. I wouldn't go there for theological accuracy but I definitely find some intriguing theological and relational insight there.) I envisage spending time and perfect understanding with everybody I've ever known and loved. (And that includes some of you, though I only "know" you here!) And I foresee lots of fulfilling work and fun interactions and activities. I imagine witticisms without the "cut", and even "attitude" without the defensiveness and without mockery or contempt. Rather than seeing our experience in heaven as ethereal, I see it as very real. (I'm remembering the last scene in C.S. Lewis' last Narnia book, The Last Battle, where everything is more real than anything imaginable.) That corresponds to what a lot of you have said ... brighter, clearer, more in focus, etc. And I love Jeremy's forest pictures. Yes!!! And also beautiful gardens. And the "city" for me is all about gathering together and communication with each other. Lots and lots of us in community, both in intimate relationships and in big groups.
