strappinglad Posted November 7, 2015 Posted November 7, 2015 Idle thoughts are those I get after buying a lottery ticket. Excess laughter is that found on youtube videos of guys falling. The person taking the video always laughs in an irritating way. The muted chuckle I emit after reading the " puns" thread does not count as excessive ( I hope ).
Ahab Posted November 7, 2015 Posted November 7, 2015 Contemplating is good.Helps to eliminate idle thoughts and excess laughter.
Avatar4321 Posted November 7, 2015 Author Posted November 7, 2015 It's hard for me to eliminate them when I'm not entirely sure what they are.
Senator Posted November 7, 2015 Posted November 7, 2015 It's hard for me to eliminate them when I'm not entirely sure what they are.The language is imprecise, so good luck!
Ahab Posted November 7, 2015 Posted November 7, 2015 For idle, think of your car when it is in idle, or park, whether or not the engine is running. It's not getting you anywhere is the point. So try to avoid thoughts that don't help to get you anywhere in your spiritual journey. Thinking to try to learn something is all well and good though, because trying to learn something is good. At least as long as it helps you in your spiritual journey.Excess just means too much. So don't laugh too much. And go ahead and take all the time you need to contemplate what it means to laugh too much.
CV75 Posted November 7, 2015 Posted November 7, 2015 "Remember the great and last promise which I have made unto you; cast away your idle thoughts and your excess of laughter far from you." (D&C 88:69)What are idle thoughts? And what level of laughter is excessive?Contemplating both of these.I would say idle thoughts are those that we allow mere habit or give over to the control of other people or things. I would say excessive laughter is that which does not contribute to our journey along the path to Christ, physically, mentally, emotionally or spiritually, or in any other manner. Additionally, I find the laugh tracks on "I Love Lucy" a bit excessive.

This seem an insignificant issue at least to me. This always seemed an odd directive to me.
JLHPROF Posted November 8, 2015 Posted November 8, 2015 (edited) idle thoughts and your excess of laughter I always connect this with Joseph Smith History 1:28 -In making this confession, no one need suppose me guilty of any great or malignant sins. A disposition to commit such was never in my nature. But I was guilty of levity, and sometimes associated with jovial company, etc., not consistent with that character which ought to be maintained by one who was called of God as I had been. But this will not seem very strange to any one who recollects my youth, and is acquainted with my native cheery temperament. There should be a certain level of sobriety in someone who is called of God, but not dourness. There should be more attention focused on significant topics than we often give. (I have this thought often when I see the behavior of many on Temple Square). Edited November 8, 2015 by JLHPROF
