Why Pray "thy Will Be Done?"

... Imagine if we were brothers. We grew up in the same household with the same parents. When you have need for lunch money you ask your parents and they give you lunch money. When I ask, I get silence. Or when we both ask dad if we can go play at a friend's house he answers you but doesn't acknowledge me at all. Silly example. But that's how it feels. He seems totally inconsistent in his responses to his children's prayers.

I honestly feel for you HappyJackWagon.  I'm acutely aware that it's not the same thing, but I am baffled by the fact that the same God who whispered peace to my soul on three occasions as I lay on an operating table seems stubbornly silent as to how, if at all, I might rescue my career aspirations.  (And don't forget that there were two miserable failures before that.)  I can only say that there have been occasions in which I've been made aware of the Holy Spirit operating in my life ... but only in retrospect.  It is possible for the Spirit to operate in our lives without our being aware of it.  For example, Elder David A. Bednar once taught:

Strong, dramatic spiritual impressions do not come to us frequently. Even as we strive to be faithful and obedient, there simply are times when the direction, assurance, and peace of the Spirit are not readily recognizable in our lives. In fact, the Book of Mormondescribes faithful Lamanites who “were baptized with fire and with the Holy Ghost, and they knew it not” (3 Nephi 9:20).

Perhaps you might find something of value here (scroll down to the November 4, 2013 update, which has the most relevance to what we're discussing here): https://greatgourdini.wordpress.com/2012/10/17/of-doubt-faith-questions-and-choices/.

Regardless, I wish you well. :)
