Yirgacheffe Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Yes, Ambien is nice, but it may impair memory and if you advent taken it before make sure someone is there. My mom first time took it before a bath and then couldn't get out. Had to pull her out, then she crawled to the bed and I pushed her up on it. I've heard stories of people coming down and finding groceries (which mean they drove) or all the knives laid out. Start with small dose (half what they gave you) and the up it only if needed.Besides loss of memoryand doing weird things like undressing in the wong pace (thankfully ive never done really weird stuff, just memory issues as I completely forgot that I had cut my hair last night until I saw the remains in the sink.hadn't taken much off thank goodness, one night I almost made myself bald on one side because instead of scissors, I thought I'd try electric hair cutter....there can be dizziness and halluncinations...the letters will come off the page and start marching for me, very minor, heard of more significant ones. Ambien is one of the better ones iirc because it doesn't disrupt deeper sleep, but you can get quickly dependent on it.And it for awhile would make me suicidal when I woke up, but after several years of not taken it, it no longer has that effect for me, but I've heard of others so be careful agin and keep someone around who knows what might happen just in case. Also can be very addicting though I've been able to get off of it pretty easy by just cutting it down for a week to half, than quarter dose.Iow, read all the safety material they give you for once. Great drug but strange side effects.Try put some CDs with relaxation techniques, can be very helpful (unless you have RLS which gets worse when relaxing). And if you do it every night...take a hot bath, no reading or TV aor computer and some stretching exercises, light snack, and bed with no lights on, even a clock light might be too much, I cover all the electronic little red and green lights with black electrician's tape and then finish off with a cd same time every night, it can be very helpful. Use your body if it works, mine won't and oh how I wish it did.Tryptophan helps with sleep as well, amino acid so empty stomach or with juice....precursor of serotonin, makes me less groggy and no nightmares I get with melatonin.I seem to remember something on the evening news lately talking about how dosing for Ambien was too high for women (dosing was determined from working with men?) and women should be extremely careful when starting ambien for many of the reasons you listed.

Rain Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 I am about to offend everyone. Should be fun. I love the LDS Church, but I have a big problem with how (some? many? most?) members treat one particular issue: the Word of Wisdom. Interpretations can vary and reasonable minds can disagree, but I must say I find it funny how many of our members think they are in compliance with the WOW yet are likely morbidly obese. Now, I know there are healthy people who are fat and overweight (or at least many fat and overweight people claim they are healthy), but by and large if you are fat it is because you are not healthy. I know from experience. I love food. Starburst, pizza, cookies, PB M&Ms, popcorn, etc. are my favorite things in the world. At different times in my life I have struggled to be more moderate. I personally think the text of the Word of Wisdom was not meant to be an exhaustive list of do's and don'ts. Yes, coffee, tea, tobacco and alcohol are all off limits. But if the WOW was given today what would the Lord have to say about Diet Coke? Fast food? Other junk food? On a related note, one of the things that really grinds my gears is our attitude towards fat folks. The only thing our society hates more than obese people are obese people who are trying to lose weight and be healthy. I cannot tell you how many times I have refrained from eating crap food and friends get visually angry with me. Or after having lost a lot of weight, an overweight friend might say "You looked better before." How is that any less offensive than me saying to them "You looked better before you got fat?" I hate how we view body image in our culture, but I think we have gone the exact opposite direction and way over corrected. The notion of "you are perfect the way you are" is bull when you are overweight and unhealthy. And chances are you are unhealthy if you are overweight. Heaven forbid we actually encourage people to improve rather than coddle and tell them how awesome they are with all that extra weight. Instead we guilt men (and women) who are attracted to...attractive people (gasp!)...by calling them shallow and heartless. So IMO and interpretation of the WOW I think there are many of us (myself included at times) who are hypocrites when it comes to personal health and are not living the Lord's law of health as he intended it. Drinking a super mega double big gulp every morning? Eating McDonalds on a regular basis? Yeah, I think each of those are violations of our covenants. I am in compliance with the commandment part of the WoW as determined by the church and taught by the missionaries and am morbidly obese. I am working on the wisdom part of it. There is one part I consider as a wisdom part for others, but is a commandment to me because I have prayed about it and the Lord said I should treat that part as commandment for myself. I do too. I know what it is like. I also know how hard it is to lose weight, having done it myself. I sympathize with not being able to lose weight either. But I have often encountered people who say they can't physically lose weight and then I see how they eat when they are trying to lose weight.Unless you are with them very often you really don't know how they eat. Last year I worked diligently to lose weight. About 4 days a week I was exercising 2 hours a week and 2 days for about an hour. I was putting everything I had into my fitness pal and trying to follow the best eating plans - no fad diets. I was consistently eating the amount I should. On occasion I would go to eat with friends and would treat myself to more, but what the people eating with me didn't see was that I was eating less that day to make up for it. My heart was getting much stronger. I was gaining muscles. I was not only doing sit-ups which I hadn't been able to do for years, but do them on a decline bench with weights. I was feeling great compared to what I had been. I actually measured 1/2 inch taller when I went to the doctor because I was standing up straight. And in 8 months I lost a whopping 20 pounds - about 1/2 pound a week. Now I know the whole muscle/fat thing, but 1/2 pound weightloss per week is discouraging. My whole point is that yes, we should teach good nutrition and exercise etc. But we don't need to point fingers and say, "you are doing it wrong." I was at the doctors today for prescription meds for generic Ambien. While waiting for the doc I read an article about breathing techniques to help you sleep. I didn't get to finish the article, but that's something to look at trying. I know I need it. I started yoga several years ago and learned a lot about breathing. I bought Yoga for Stress Relief for my neck and shoulders and loved it. Then I found a gem that helps you go to sleep. My poor son is happy and laid back most of the time, but there are little things that have him way over anxious. One of those things is getting enough sleep so he can get up in the morning. If he has the slightest trouble getting to sleep he will get all worked up and stay awake for hours because he is stressed that he isn't asleep. So I've started going into his room at night and going through some of this part of the video with him and am teaching him to do it on his own. It has been very helpful in getting him to sleep. 1
The Nehor Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Come the famine the fat shall inherit the earth. Come the famine the fat shall be eaten by everyone else.
Avatar4321 Posted September 7, 2014 Posted September 7, 2014 I was fat. I didn't drink or smoke or anything like that but I have been addicted to sugar. The word of wisdom is good to follow. I started eating fruits and veggies at breakfast and lunch and I'm the best I've been for a long time.I don't think the word of wisdom is just for our health. It's to see if we will keep the Lord's counsel. A way to try our faith 1
mfbukowski Posted September 7, 2014 Posted September 7, 2014 I need to lose 45 pounds to be back to normal. I don't know how I'll find the will because with obesity comes tiredness. It takes energy to exercise.Obviously if you fast you will lose weight. I am not saying I recommend that, but at some point you WILL lose weight as you reduce your calorie count to a certain point regardless of if you are fasting or not. People who cannot get out of bed in nursing homes lose weight all the time, and sometimes that becomes a problem in itself. Also, you will find that the more you exercise, the less tired you will become. So exercise until you are tired, then do a few minutes more the next day. Gradually, the time you are exercising will increase. Try it and you will see it's true!
Calm Posted September 7, 2014 Posted September 7, 2014 For the vast majority of people this is true. Not for all when there is another cause for the tiredness. If after 6 weeks it doesn't become easier, you might want to go to the doctor and get a good physical.
mfbukowski Posted September 7, 2014 Posted September 7, 2014 Now I know the whole muscle/fat thing, but 1/2 pound weightloss per week is discouraging. That's 26 pounds a year, 52 pounds in two years. I'll take that in any two years! 1

strappinglad Posted September 7, 2014 Posted September 7, 2014 (edited) I have just been playing around on this site. It is interesting to change the parameters and see how the caloric numbers change. Age , gender, height, weight exercise levels all have a significant effect. According to my stats I need about 2400 calories a day to maintain my weight. That's 20 McDs or 60 eggplants. Decisions , decisions ! http://www.calculator.net/calorie-calculator.html Edited September 7, 2014 by strappinglad

Alan Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 Neither my wife nor I eat meat. For me, the WoW says, in effect, only eat it when you have to.We don't have to so we don't.
The Nehor Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 Neither my wife nor I eat meat. For me, the WoW says, in effect, only eat it when you have to.We don't have to so we don't. It says to eat it only when in the midst of a famine or when you are excessively hungry. My usual justification is the latter.
thesometimesaint Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 We all probably would be better off if we limited the amount of meat we eat. By the same token meat is a ready source of vital nutrients. So have a little steak for your stomachs sake.
Tacenda Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 Eggs are an excellent source of protein, and won't kill an animal. Peanuts also, among others. You have to wonder if eating so much meat is going to bite us in the butt, especially when you see abuse of the animal. Maybe we deserve the high cholesterol it causes, our consequence more or less.
Mola Ram Suda Ram Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 Well, I think I will start worrying about it more when they start asking questions about it. Over weight is not something in the WoW. On another note, I am trying to lose weight I have given up soda and I work out 5 times a week for an hour. I think there is good reason weight is not a factor. 1

In moderation eggs are fine. Hen's don't do well when in active egg laying production, 1-3 years is its normal life expectancy. Peanuts are fine in moderation. As I said we'd be better off eating less meat. For an adult 3-4 oz. 2-3 times a week shouldn't present any real problems. I support making animal cruelty a serious crime, with serious penalties. Treat animal well; respect what they do for us, and when necessary kill then quickly and as humanly as possible.

Not specifically but I have never met anyone who is very overweight who can run and not be weary or walk to the refrigerator without getting faint.
thesometimesaint Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 You should scale meat (and protein) intake based on how active you are. True, but activity level is just one of the criteria that we should wisely use.
