Garden Girl Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 Well I was not disappointed... Saturdays are my favorite day for watching sports. Starts out at 8:00 a.m. my time (PST)... then there's usually a game or two during the afternoon/evening. This morning was a replay of the Bell Helicopter 2011 Bowl game, where we played against Tulsa... that's one of my favorite games, particularly the last few seconds when Cody Hoffman made a terrific catch from Riley Nelson to give the Cougars the 24 to 21 win... Then in real time today...The Women's Basketball team (5 - 3) played against the Colorado State Rams (4 - 3) in the Energy Solutions Arena in Salt Lake...defeating the Rams 69 to 58... BYU maintained the lead by scoring more second chance points, and by out rebounding...The Rams are expected to win their Conference...Lexi Eaton had a season high 30 points; Xojian Harry had a career high 13 points; and Morgan Bailey scored 9 points...Their next game will be Tuesday, 12/9 in the Marriott Center where they will host Weber State, to be televised on BYU-TV. Then this evening the BYU Men's Basketball Team welcomed the Univ of Hawaii Warriors, where they played in the Energy Solutions Arena in Salt Lake... the first half was fairly close in score... but BYU started pulling ahead in the latter part of the first half, and in the second half, with BYU defeating the Warriors 90 to 70.Kyle Collinsworth, along with others, made numerous plays that helped the Cougars maintain their lead, and with Collinsworth being named the "Game Changer" ... he scored BYU's first triple double since 1988 (19 points; 12 rebounds, and 10 assists). Haws finished with 30 points (including 10 for 10 free throws)... Fischer had 20 points, and Winder had 11 points. During the final few minutes of the game, Coach Rose called in players from the bench, giving them the opportunity to play and gain valuable experience, because Rose says BYU will need all of the players during the season.Next Wednesday, BYU will next meet #25 Utah in the Marriott Center... to be televised on ESPNU. Garden Girl Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 (edited) Well it's all set...The BYU Cougars Football team (8 - 4) will meet the ACC Champion Memphis Tigers (9 - 3) in the Miami Beach Bowl on Monday, December 22 at 2:00 PM (EST). The game will be televised on ESPN...Memphis has won their last six games straight; BYU closed out their year by winning their last four games.Coach Mendenhall said they are looking forward to the challenge of facing Memphis, and that it should be a good match-up.This will be the first meeting between the Cougars and the Tigers. Kenngo1969 Posted December 9, 2014 Posted December 9, 2014 (edited) I'm rooting for BYU Utah in men's basketball tomorrow evening. I hereby assert my 5th Amendment Constitutional right against self-incrimination, and decline to say who I'm rooting for. (Whoever wins? ) Regardless, it should be a great game. Garden Girl Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 (edited) Last night, Dec. 9... the BYU Women's Basketball Team (5 - 3) (0 - 0 WCC) faced Weber State Wildcats (4 - 4) in the Marriott Center and won 64 - 53... Play was sort of sloppy on both sides, with lots of turnovers and fouls. But, BYU won to play another day...Bailey shot a career high 28 points... and Eaton had 25 points, including three 3-pointers. Tonight, Dec 10... the BYU Men's Basketball Team (7 - 2) (0 - 0 WCC) will face rival Utah (6 - 1) (0 - 0 Pac 12) in the Marriott Center at 7:00 PM MST. The game will be televised on ESPNU. At their last meeting... Dec 14, 2013... the Utes prevailed 81 - 64. HONORS:Women's Volleyball... four Cougars received American Volleyball Coaches Regional Honors...Hamson, Gray and Boswell received 1st team honors. Young received Honorable Mention.Additionally, Head Coach Shawn Olmstead was named All-Pacific South Region Coach of the Year for leading his squad to a 27 - 4, 16 - 2 WCC record, including outright lst place WCC play. Garden Girl Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 I watched the Cougars vs the Utes last night 12/10... frustrated... the Cougars shooting was cold... the Utes pulled ahead early by up to 13 points at times... but the Cougars would catch up, even lead for a short time... it was an edge-of-your-seat game. All I can say is that it was a good thing for the Utes that BYU was not up to their usual play (the highest scoring college team in the country, adveraging 90+ points per game) or they would have lost rather than win 65 - 61... I do have to give credit to the Ute's defense, holding BYU to 60+ points to win by 4.The Marriott Center was packed... the commentators said 20,000... the noise was thunderous... what a game... GG 3

GG I was there, and it was certainly LOUD. The Utes are a very well coached team, and they could well win the PAC-12 this year. I do think their game plan benefited greatly by Nate Austin's early-game hamstring injury--he is, afterall, BYU's leading rebounder. Just sayin'...
Kenngo1969 Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 Wichita State is no slouch. Props to the Utes. Wednesday night should be fun. P.S.: I grew up a BYU fan (my dad grew up in Orem, and the Cougs were the "local" team). I tried to get into BYU for my graduate studies, but, alas, the "Y" didn't let me in. I had a couple offers to out-of-state (California) schools and from the "U." Perhaps I, in a fit of pique, should have gone to one of those schools; however, even with (very modest) honors at entrance, it still didn't make economic sense for me to go to school out of state (particularly not considering the enormous cost of living, let alone what it cost to go to school). Just for fun (and provided I could arrange the necessary heavy security ), one year, I'd like to go to a matchup between the two schools in a half-red, half-blue outfit, with a "U" emblazoned on the red side and the "Y" emblazoned on the blue side, and red face paint on half of my face and blue face paint on the other half ... just to keep the fans of both schools guessing where my truest allegiances lie. (I know this is heresy, but I usually root for both schools, and for whichever one has the most to lose when they play each other. ) It's probably fitting that the Utes won, given their national ranking (I hate it when a local team, any local team, attracts national attention by being (highly) ranked, only to lose) and it does seem as though it was a good game. (Didn't get the chance to watch, because we don't get SPIN-U (AKA ESPN-U).

Garden Girl Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 (edited) Dec 12... Hooray for the BYU Women's Volleyball Team... Rah-Rah, Rah Rah Rah... yeaaaa Cougars!! The #12 BYU women played #6 Seed, Florida State and won in 4 sets: 25 - 20; 25 - 19; 19 - 25; and 26 - 24... Jen Hamson had a career-high 30 kills. They now advance to the Elite 8... and will play the winner of the game to be shown tonight between #3 Wasington and #14 Nebraska... I'm just about to begin watching that game (to start as soon as soccer is finished) to be televised on ESPNU. GG EDIT TO ADD: I just finished watching the Washington/Nebraska game... what a game!! #14 Nebraska upset #3 Washington on Washington's home court to win 3 sets to 1... (Wash. had not lost on their home court all season... 17 games). Tomorrow night (Dec 13) BYU will face Washington... at 8:30 PST, to be televised on ESPNU... I have to say, Nebraska is a really good team and simply outplayed Washington... Tomorrow night's game should be exciting... Edited December 13, 2014 by Garden Girl 2
Garden Girl Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 (edited) Tonight at 8:30 PM (PST), the #12 BYU Women's Volleyball Team will take on the #14 Nebraska Cornhuskers in the Regional Finals... televised on ESPNU...Nebraska upset the #3 Washington Huskies last night... BYU will have to play really well to prevail and move on to the NCAA national semi-finals. Go Ladies! GG EDIT TO ADD I've kept referring to #12 BYU, but found out that #12 is only in the WCC... they are unseeded in this NCAA tournament... not sure why but perhaps because BYU is independent (?)Anyway, I hope some of you were watching this game... What a game!!I'm so proud of our Women's Volleyball Team... They swept Nebraska in 3 sets, to move into the NCAA National semi-finals... for the first time since 1993...They played smart, efficient, and with enthusiasm... overcoming anything Nebraska was able to hand to them... the scores for the three sets: 25 - 21... 25 - 20... and 25 - 21.The BYU team (29 - 4) is the #1 blocking team in the country, and Amy Boswell is the #1 blocker in the country... a couple of others have national distinctions also... the commentators likened unseeded BYU to Cinderella attending the ball... going for the glass slipper... and the only thing now standing in the way of getting to the ball (finals) is #2 seeded Texas (23 - 10)... Garden Girl Posted December 18, 2014 Posted December 18, 2014 Today is a very important day for the BYU Women's Volleyball Team (29 - 4)... they play #2 seed Texas Longhorns (23 - 10) in the NCAA Tournament's Semi-Finals... The only thing standing in the way of BYU advancing to the finals is Texas...The game will be televised today on ESPN2 at 5:00 PM (MST) or 4:00 PM (PST). Think good thoughts for our ladies... they've worked hard to get here in the final four... GG 2
Garden Girl Posted December 19, 2014 Posted December 19, 2014 Oh how I hope some of you were able to watch this evening's game between our Byu Women's Volleyball Team and the #2 seeded Texas Longhorns... what a game! I thought I was going to have to get out the Lisinopril... my blood pressure I'm sure was sky high!! The BYU Cougars took the match in 3 sets to 1... (25 - 23... 25 - 16... 17 - 25... and 26 - 24). It's now on to the finals... (The commentators said "Cinderella is going to the ball!) BYU is only the 3rd non-seeded team to make it to the finals. Tonight the other game is taking place between #1 Stanford and #5 Penn State to determine who BYU will play. It's going to be televised on ESPN2 so think I'll watch it and see who we'll play...Each time Texas pulled ahead by a couple of points, BYU came right back and tied and then went ahead... Can't say enough about the team as a whole, or players like Alexa Gray, Amy Boswell and Jen Hamson. Boswell (6'4") and Hamson (6'7") were key in blocking. The team will play the finals on Saturday 12/20 at 6:30 PM (CST). The game will be televised on ESPN2 (?).And today Coach Olmstead was named AVCA (Amer Volleyball Coaches Assoc) Coach of the Year. Congrats Coach O. GG 2
Garden Girl Posted December 20, 2014 Posted December 20, 2014 (edited) Tomorrow... 12/20/14... the BYU Women's Volleyball team will play in the NCAA Finals... against #5 seeded Penn State, who upset #1 seed Stanford last night. The final will be shown on ESPN2 at 5:30 PM (MST) Before any of the BYU sports programs I always pray for our teams... not that they will win per se, but that they will be able to play with honor and good sportsmanship... that they will be able to draw on their inner strength, skill, and talent... that they will be able to represent BYU well... and that will be my prayer tomorrow as the women take to the floor in what must be a most exciting and challenging feeling as they participate in their first NCAA finals... it was 1993 the last time our volleyball team made it to a semi-final... let alone the finals. And here we are... unseeded... Cinderella going to the ball...Go Cougars!! GG EDIT TO ADD... Also today, 12/20, the BYU Men's Basketball team plays Stanford at 8:00 P.M. (MST), to be televised on ESPNU. Edited December 20, 2014 by Garden Girl 1
Garden Girl Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 (edited) I didn't think my heart would hurt so much for our Women's Volleyball Team... they lost to the defending champions Penn State (3 sets to 0). In fact, this is Penn's 7th championship. The scores... 25 - 21... 26 - 24... 25 - 14... Overall, Penn did outplay BYU... but the third set wasn't because Penn played so well... BYU played badly, making several errors that resulted in Penn pulling ahead where it was just too difficult to catch up. But all in all, I'm so proud of our team in accomplishing what they did... they upset 4 seeded teams on their way to the finals, including #2 Texas... they had hoped to upset a 5th, #5 seeded Penn State... but it was not their night. Kenngo1969 Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 I hate it when the Cougs are on SPIN-U (aka ESPN-U), which I don't get.
Calm Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 Surely there is a neighbour around…otherwise you can come down south of BYU and hang out with my husband (but he will be watching it late a day or two due to too many errands if you are talking about tomorrow),
Garden Girl Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 (edited) Well the Men's Basketball Team held on to win against Stanford, 79 to 77 in a real thriller that had BYU ahead from 5 to 13 points at times, only to have Stanford go on a run and catch up. We led by 13 points with under five minutes to go when Stanford had a late run that brought them within 2 points. But BYU held on to take the win at 79 to 77. Even with a sore ankle Haws scored 24 points, with Collinsworth, Winder and Fischer scoring in double digits... they'll have to tighten up some things like turnovers...The Cougars next meet UMass on Tuesday at 12:00 PM (MST) in Marriott Center, to be televised on BYUY-TV. Tacenda Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 Well the Men's Basketball Team held on to win against Stanford, 79 to 77 in a real thriller that had BYU ahead from 5 to 13 points at times, only to have Stanford go on a run and catch up. GGGG I like that you're such a big fan and get excited with these games. My mom attended BYU and loved watching their basketball games, not so much football. Also, my niece on my husband's side was a cheerleader and her husband was the mascot a few years ago. They have a son they named "Cougar". 2
Garden Girl Posted December 23, 2014 Posted December 23, 2014 Well, the Miami Bowl is history... and what a game it was. I hope a good many of you saw the game, repeated tonight on BYU-TV. The game was intense and emotional. Both teams were evenly matched and the lead changed several times... Memphis has not allowed an opponent to make more than 20 points... but Memphis finally prevailed to win in double overtime by a a score of 55 to 48. The score at the end of regulation was tied at 45... In the first overtime, BYU made a field goal to lead 48 to 45. But just at the end of the first OT, Memphis scored to tie again at 48... In second OT, Memphis scored a touchdown to take the lead at 55 to 48... so it was BYU's ball and we were pressing for a touchdown when Stewart threw an interception which ended the overtime... and the final score of 55 to 48.What followed then was a brief but emotional fight on the field... a Memphis player threw the first punch at a BYU player and both teams erupted... coaches, referees, team leaders all breaking the teams apart. The commentators said it appeared the Memphis team taunted BYU and a BYU played pushed a Memphis player, then a Memphis player threw a punch... I saw a couple of BYU players down on the ground and Memphis kicking and hitting them. It was not pretty as both teams participated. Tom Holmoe apologized said there would be a complete review of what happened. The Memphis head coach said that that was not who they were, and they had to learn to handle success in the right way. And everyone hopes this ending would not overshadow what was a terrific game between the two teams. GG EDIT TO ADD: Also today...The Women's Basketball Team (8 - 3) played Utah State and won... again in double OT... by a score of 62 - 58. BYU has won 5 straight games... Lexi Eaton led the scoring with 29 points. Going into the first OT the score was tied at 50 - 50... and the second OT started tied at 52 - 52 but BYU prevailed for the win. The Men's Basketball team (9 - 3) hosts UMass (6 - 5) at Marriott Center tomorrow 12/23 at 12:00 Noon (MST) to be televised on BYU-TV... Go Cougars!!
Garden Girl Posted December 23, 2014 Posted December 23, 2014 I just watched another nail-biter... BYU Men's Basketball Team against UMass... went into overtime... it was a hard fought match with the lead changing 15 or 16 times total... but the Cougars defeated the Tigers, prevailing 77 to 71 in overtime....Tyler Haws had only 4 points for the game... only a couple of his numerous shots fell successfully... Anson Winder was really the steady force of the game, along with Collinsworth. I get so mad at some of the players like Kafusi... every time they put him in I just groan because invariably he fouls someone and in some cases causes BYU to have costly errors or plays... then he turns around and does something fantastic... Same with Worthington... and with Winder at times because he will foul and then turn around and make a critical 3-pointer or rebound, etc. And Fischer has been absolutely cold in shooting, missing most of his shots, then he'll make a 3-pointer at just the needed time. Whew! But they held it together to win this very important game... GG
Garden Girl Posted December 28, 2014 Posted December 28, 2014 I just watched the BYU vs. #8 in the country Gonzaga basketball game... It was a thriller... Gonzaga won 80 - 87...What I don't understand fully is the concept of fouling at the end of the game... I think I understand that that is supposed to prelong the game by allowing the fouling team to get possession of the ball after the free throws, which may or may not be made successfully. But... BUT... IMO there reaches a point when the fouling becomes stupid because there is no chance in Hades the fouling team will be able to make enough points to win in the time remaining... The final score would have been closer had BYU not given away all those free throws. To win they would have had to shoot 3-pointers, and that just wasn't happening at that point...BYU got off to a really rocky start with Gonzaga quickly moving ahead in the first part of the first half... up as many as 16 points!! BYU couldn't buy a basket... then the Cougars took hold and their shots started hitting their mark, including some three pointers and BYU quickly closed the gap with some good plays and points to TIE the game at 43 apiece going into the half thanks to a great shot by Collinsworth. The second half saw BYU take the lead by up to 6 points, only to have the Zags catch up... Play and scoring stayed close clear to the end... and then the fouling plays began... and, BYU losing 80 to 87... I suppose if we have to lose, it's understandable with Gonzaga... they've been beating everyone and stand #8 in the country... GG
Calm Posted December 28, 2014 Posted December 28, 2014 So how was the refereeing? Want to be prepared if husband decides to watch it. He who is kind to everyone else is not kind to refs. The bad ones appear to be the symbol for all that is evil in the world for him.
