Ow Not The First Excommunication

I was researching heavenly mother in response to something in another post and ran across essays written by Margaret Toscano.  As I researched her further, I discovered that she was excommunicated for similar reasons as Kate Kelly.  Though... without the heavy media attention.  I'm not sure what to think of it all.... but it doesn't sit well.  Here is the link:

Yeah, she's already famous. Though Lavina Fielding Anderson would probably be more similar to Kate Kelly, complete with the petition to appeal the excommunication. And Lavina Fielding Anderson continues to attend church after all these years.

Have you seen/heard of anything about Maxine Hanks, while you're at it?

Maxine Hanks has been rebaptized and has made occasional appearances in the public eye. She was recently part of a FAIR panel about feminism and as I listened to it, I was struck by her awesome humility and spirit. She's still a feminist. There was plenty of media at the time.   And Sister Toscano is involved at least behind scenes in OW:  Sister Kelly calls her a mentor.

Yes, Margaret Toscano's excommunication should have taught Kate Kelly that what she was doing would lead to the same for her.

Given her interview on MSNBC, I'd say excommunication is exactly what she wanted to advance the 'cause'.

Are women excommunicated like this in the Catholic church?

Yes, they are also disciplined in other ways.  Some US nuns have run afoul of the Vatican because of their liberal tendencies.

My husband assigns talks... He said my next assignment will be Heavenly Mother. I told him I didn't think that was a good idea right now...Although I would love to do it!

There is almost nothing that you could say without potentially skirting the edge. Some really interesting stuff out there, but to say it over the pulpit might be kind of dicey.

Why does everyone comment on what a good member Lavina Fielding Anderson is? I know, she attends Church regularly, but why hasn't she been re-baptized after all these years?

I think it's the same boat KK is in: re-baptism will require her to lose face with her group of admirers, and this will require a lot of humility and lack of pride. Putting myself in her shoes, it would be very embarrassing, and you (me, too) would have to be extremely humble to "toe the line" after worldwide fame and accolades.

I don't know that this is the case for LFA, but why hasn't she been baptized yet? Does anyone know?

Well the door back in for KK is pretty tightly closed unless she wants to violate her conscience and disavow a group with whom she agrees. This isn't like your normal excommunication over say sexual transgression where you confess your wrong doing, feel bad about it, etc. This is asking someone to go against their conscience. If she had been exed for just attacking the Church or something she said, but in essence here they have sort of branded the OW like say the KKK.

I know what you're saying, Stoneholm. For Kate Kelly and other high-profile apostates, they have to do what probably feels to them like making a hostage video to be rebaptized.

I think they should "come around" and renounce their apostasy things, but I recognize how hard it would be for me, in their shoes. We are talking real humility and defeat of pride.

Being true to yourself can be a hard thing.  Some call it pride.  Others call it integrity.

Yes, there are some who seem to invariably describe their pride and stubbornness as integrity.

Seems to depend a lot on if you're a man or a woman.

So, what is LFA still "being true to herself" about at the expense of rebaptism? That's what I was wondering.

In order to be rebaptized, she would have to confess to wrongdoing, and it seems she can't do that in good conscience.
