Does the LDS Faith have a "health guidelines"? Yes, the health guideline is known as the "Word of Wisdom".

Here is what the Church has published regarding the "Word of Wisdom":

[T]he Church revelation spelling out health practices (Doctrine and Covenants 89) does not mention the use of caffeine. The Church’s health guidelines prohibit alcoholic drinks, smoking or chewing of tobacco, and “hot drinks” — taught by Church leaders to refer specifically to tea and coffee. *"

Will you find Mormons who drink alcoholic drinks? Yes you will. Will you find Mormons who drink tea? Yes you will?

To a different point, I am not aware of any official statement from the LDS Church which distinguishes "herbal tea" as NOT being a "tea" prohibited by the Word of Wisdom. Such a statement might exist but I am unaware of it.

huh, wierd.  Reminds me of how the Muslims would not drink but they sure loved their hashish.

Herbal Tea's are not Tea. IE; Mormon Tea

SEE http://www.gcrg.org/bqr/7-3/mormon-tea.htm

The stuff tastes terrible, but it is not against the WoW.

ohhh herbal teas are quite yummy if you get the right stuff.  Try blood orange tea sometime, its awesome, especially if you seep the leaves with some grapefruit.

Interpretation of the WoW is such a rigamarole...

It's still anyone's guess what God wants us to do.

Hello JLH...

I don't think the WoW is a rigamarole...nor that it's "anyone's guess" what God wants us to do...

Simple common sense, and the scriptures, make it clear enough what types of things we are to avoid... and we know that a simple diet of veggies, grains, limited meat is what is most beneficial in terms of body health and avoiding obesity.  Research has given us much help in understanding calories, carbs, stimulants, etc etc which helps us choose food/drinks for our best benefit so that we maintain the spirit of the "law" as was presented in Sec 89, February 1833.   I don't see it as "anyone's guess" at all...

Way back when this diet was somewhat common.  About the only bad thing was how people used to eat a lot of sweets.  Not sure if you have midwestern roots, but man do they eat.  Thing is, they would work it off.  Think the scariest thing nowadays is the processed garbage and general laziness of people when it comes to food choices.  Vegtables are cheap so I eat a lot of salads, buy fruits on sale and tend to stick to chicken.  Also crock pots can turn the toughest cut of meat into a world class dinner.  I'm just waiting for my generation to fill up hospitals with cardiac problems and all the other bad things that happen to people who never learned how to eat right.

Tell me... my husband's family was from Nebraska, and we used to visit almost every summer... and yes they can sure eat... It's true, people used to work it off... then work started placing people indoors at desks, etc.... and now, instead of running and playing outside, younger people are playing videogames etc., and they no longer have Phys Ed in schools.  So our physical activity has been greatly curtailed overall as we grow up, much to the detriment of our health... and continues unless we make a real effort to alot time to exercise and other physical activity.

I chuckled at the "crock pot"... my favorite cooking utensil so to speak.  Being alone, I don't like to "cook" per se... so it is easy for me to make soups/stews with lots of veggies in the crock pot without having to think about it all day... And now they have the slow cooker plastic liners so you can easily clean up...

Just in the sense it is a religious covenant that members agree to abide by.  If I understand it correctly, a lot of kosher laws came about as a response to idolatrous practices.  Other was about clean vs. unclean animals in the sense of religious purity.

The WoW came about due to Joseph Smith responding to a request by his wife to do something about the mess the men were making with their tobacco.  God took that and built on to it a principle that would not only lead to healthier practices but would work as a social marker to set his people apart (which the kosher laws do as well for Jews).

I was an Orthodox Jew. The WoW is a piece of cake compared to keeping (true) kosher. :)

TSTS, have you tried Good Earth's "Sweet & Spicy" herbal tea?

No. But I do have a passion for some Celestial Seasons "Wild Berry Zinger". :)

Do you have any statements from the LDS Church on the matter?

Yes.

http://mormonism-unveiled.blogspot.com/2013/04/several-authoritative-lds-sources.html

April 1977 Ensign article entitled "The Do's in the Word of Wisdom" as evidence.

Since Doctrine & Covenants 89:11 states “And again, verily I say unto you, all wholesome herbs God hath ordained for the constitution, nature, and use of man — every herb in the season thereof, and every fruit in the season thereof; all these to be used with prudence and thanksgiving”,

Herbs also add variety to our meals through spices such as onions, garlic, peppers, sage, parsley, bay leaves, etc. Some herbs have medicinal properties as well. However, one should use extreme care in treating illnesses with herbs, since most have not been subjected to the careful testing required for other drugs and some contain powerful chemicals. Some people enjoy herbal teas, but even these should not replace more nutritious drinks in the diet. Always tell your physician if you are taking any herbal teas and know what the tea contains if possible. Recently an association has been identified between herbal teas and cancer of the esophagus, but further research is needed. In Utah, in the summer of 1976, three deaths were attributed to the overuse of herbs. When dealing with severe or chronic illnesses, be especially wary of herbal treatments or remedies that have not been proven effective through scientific studies. Priesthood blessings and competent medical care, not home remedies, should be obtained for treating serious disease.

Look at pictures of families from the 1950's and look at them now, its scary.  Its going to be interesting when these people are just clammoring for medical services and furious at the few healthy people for not paying more into the system and they end up dying from their poor choices.  Thats something many just don't seem to realize, no one cares about eachother anymore in the USA, a good chunk of us could just die off and while they would pay lip service no one would shed a tear.  Not like anyone was ever really that caring, what decency there was way back when went out the window with family values.  I never understood why people here did that, it was their extended families that kept them alive during the depression, and what do they do not even a mere what, 10 or so years later during the 60's?  Toss it all away.  I tend to make friends with people abroad easier than I do with most Americans and they always cringe at how nasty younger people here are to eachother and never understand why they are that way.  Sure, times are tough, but there is no need for that.  O well....

I love my crockpot, I make a lot of stews and roasts in it all the time and just freeze the leftovers.  Besides avoiding nasty fast food or even worse frozen tv dinners I save so much cash.

Depends on the flavor of Mormon. Utah Mormon, Restorationist Mormon, Community of Christ Mormon? Strangite Mormon?

No idea, only Mormons i've seen were in college and at other jobs.  THey typically had like a million pictures of their kids and pictures of their temples all over their cubicles so that flavor of Mormon.

I have mentioned obesity on here before in connection with temple recommends.  I have seen many that have them that are obese, and not because of some genetic fault.  They are obese because they abuse their 'temple'.   There are several bishops and former bishops on this board.  Can any of you recall a time a temple recommend was withheld because of such self abuse?  Or is that overlooked?

This problem is left to God to judge. While obesity is almost always a result of the sin of gluttony it is not something Church leaders have been instructed to take action on. The sinner punishes themselves enough on their own I suppose with the lethargy, the health problems, the lack of spirituality, and the early untimely death.

The only time I know it is looked at is that obese prospective missionaries are instructed to lose weight before going. The sad truth is that most of the western world is getting fat through overindulgence.

The guy on the left was basically a circus freak in 1903. Now I see people that fat every time I go to the grocery store. Unless the trend is reversed I expect life expectancy numbers to start falling soon. I have seen people who are clinically obese who insist they are "average". What a strange world we live in.

Hmmm, yes, in general.  Also you see a lot of single men staying in decient shape.  With single men opting to stay that way for life they usually take better care of themselves than their married peers.  Also, being thin anymore is seen as a status symbol in the united states.  Seems like most thin/in shape people are educated and have the dicipline to stay healthy, thats been my experience anyway.  Also, you see two interesting triends, a lot of eliteism from the thin people, and now "fat acceptance".  Google it, its cringe worthy.  O well, atleast they will be dead in a decade or so, save us some costs with an already broken healthcare system.

Meh, they make good pies.  If only sweets weren't so fattening ><.  Life is soooo unfair sometimes.  Why are the tastiest things in life so unhealthy?  Sometimes wonder if there was a hamburger tree in the garden of eden, right next to the cherry pie tree.  If I had a time machine I would go back, slap adam across the face and tell him to quit talking to that serpent lol.

Almost forgot, obligatory reply to that American Police Officer pic.

I am familiar with fat acceptance and health at every size movements. They are weird and disgusting. I personally think we need more social shame for fat people the way we do others who engage in such self-destructive behavior.

Pft, good luck with that.  I say let them ruin their lives then die of heart problems and save us a lot of money in healthcare costs.  I look at that stuff like I look at alcoholism, in the end no one forced you to put the bottle to your lips just like no one put a gun to your head to eat fast food every day for most of your life.  Your life, your choice, deal with the consiquences because no one will care about you when your life falls to pieces.

Except for their family and friends. :acute:
