Are Modern Day Prophets Redundant?

That is why we have the community of Saints so that we can make the leap together. Granted in many ways we must be alone in our seeking of our Lord and Saviour but shared faith, hope and charity exists as well if we are willing to humble ourselves and accept these gifts from others even they come across more like the crude constructs of an earnest kindergartener instead of the polished masterpieces that would make accepting them a nobrainer.

I've always wondered why we saints place so much importance in modern day prophets because I can't seem to find any place in scripture where Christ tells us to await their appearance and heed their counsel. He seems to assign that role to the Holy Spirit.

"These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you." John 14:25-26

"Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.... I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come." John 16:7, 12-13

So if we have the Holy Spirit to "teach us all things" and to "guide us into all truth," why are we so eager to hear from MEN? Or am I missing something here? Did Christ say elsewhere in the NT or BoM that He would also send us living prophets? I know that the D&C and conference talks has TONS on the role of modern day prophets but I'm looking for third-party verification.

And note: This isn't a question about sustaining the Brethren as prophets as it relates to the affairs of the Church, but rather as to whether we've assigned them an expanded role as prophets of our souls, which seems to be the role of the Holy Spirit.

It would make one wonder what in the world Paul and the other apostles thought they were doing when they were telling these individual believers that they were doing it wrong--like in Galatia. Presumably these Galatians thought they too were individually inspired too. But the scriptures tell us they needed correction.

Fact is, we'll all be off the path a bit if we lose sight of all the tools put to us. Sadly, it's way too easy to ignore one tool given us in favor of another. Thus, we're all a little lost.

I see no problems with being a skeptic and questioning; however, when confronting the question of God you must someday choose to be in with both feet or out.  Continuing to equivocate over one's beliefs is not helpful to oneself or to others.

We have to be careful about charging such with equivocation, when, upon jumping in with both feet, they may simply feel to exclaim, "This water is freakin cold!"
