Stone holm Posted July 4, 2013 Author Posted July 4, 2013 How can they be unfair but true?Unfair because one would think that it would never be true about a person who has faithfully done ones duties in the True Church year after year.
Tacenda Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 Harsh? It cuts to the quick of my worry, which is just that impersonal, institutional charity is usually done very well by massive organizations and corporations. But the sort of charity that changes the world because it touches the people in a fundamentally human way is often not meticulously organized or sanctioned by Big Church or even Big anything. Wipe out one big charity, and another one easily enough takes its place. There will always be another Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Peace Corps, World Health Organization, LDS Philanthropies, Habitat for Humanity, Salvation Army, etc., etc., etc., ready to react to need and disaster wherever their careful preparations are called for. I would like the sort of Charity that seems to clearly reveal the hand of God, and somehow that works best through human beings acting on their own conscience than through abstraction with their Mission Statements. Those whom we remember best are not interested in "massive charity" at all. Jesus himself failed to organize anything like it when, all along, he had the power to heal the whole world. How efficient could he have been, yet was not? Why is that? The greatest of them are not reactionary do-gooders who suit up when their corporate organization calls upon them, in order to do the "organized mass thing." They do not act in the context of a group with a particular slogan and nicely designed suite of web pages promoting their goodness. What I'm trying to get across is that the type of person we haven't turned out at all are the type who respond to personal vocation that is both timely and prophetic. It isn't the stuff of "I'm a Mormon" commercial advertising or weekend warrior goodness. Vocation is a way living; it does not put down its cause to do other things. It gives its entire life to that cause, not just "a lot of time."Calmoriah said that he can't see how any of this applies to the real world, and thus I must rest my case. That is precisely why we have not produced a single Mother Theresa, Dorothy Day, or Mahatma Ghandi. To be sure, our good people have a profound influence over many, and they do make a difference; but nobody from among our ranks has come along to change the world and bring everybody a renewed faith in humanity.Well, I do sound critical (because I am!), and don't mistake me: Institutional charity has its place, and those who stand up and work in the name of the organization are, nearly all of them, far better than I who am simply a noticer and a hypocrite. So, take everything I say with the requisite grain of salt.Love Mother Teresa and read a book about her. You're right, she gave 100 %. She would care for the homeless drunkards, and go right to them, not go through any middle man to help. She was the body, she would hold them, nurse them and treat them like they were her own. She was like the mother, they might not have had.
pmccombs1 Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 My difficulty is that people who are just "noticers" quite often are not aware of what is actually going on, either in the group or person they admire or the group or person they are finding fault with. It could be. Perhaps I'm not a noticer at all, just a silly crank. All I know for sure is that I've badly derailed the topic of this thread! An interesting and important discussion, nevertheless; and I'm glad that Stone Holm brought it up, because it gave me some food for thought.
Damien the Leper Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 We should just leave Jackson Co. out of this all together. The LDS church will never own the Temple Lot to fulfill prophecy.

The Lord does alot of things that may seem impossible. It's in His hand and His timing to get the Temple Lot.
Tacenda Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 Sorry for the underlining of my post. Along with not being able to use my enter key, sometimes my posts have this underlining problem. Just wanted to post something I saw on FB that is awesome. A college in Oregon is offering free college. The way it works is the graduating class will pay 3% of their earnings in life to the college to help students get through debt free. What do you all think? Is this or could this be the wave of the future? I love it. It is such a selfless act that a lot of people can get in on!! http://www.addictinginfo.org/2013/07/04/oregon-legislature-unanimously-passes-tuition-free-higher-education/

Am an Oregon alum, hope it works -- but can imagine a certain segment of the population frothing at the mouth over it.

I had thought it was for the rest of their lives and that seemed a bit excessive. I wonder if there is a maximum that can be automatically deducted. For example for the occasional student who is a millionaire by the time s/he graduates (I've known several), that 3% can add to quite quickly to much more than what they would have paid in tuition fees. Of course this may balance out those students who graduate with a degree and still end up working at the local McDonald's.What about those who don't finish college? Do they have to pay back the loans in the old fashion way? Edited July 6, 2013 by calmoriah
volgadon Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 http://www.mormondialogue.org/topic/61367-mormon-gathering-in-the-ottoman-empire/ Some sources regarding a specific problem of gathering.
brightpath Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 The Gathering has not even started yet. When the New Jerusalem is built by the Lamanites(Joseph seed) then the City of Enoch will come down, the Lost 10 tribes will come from the north, and Christ will be in the mist of them. This is the only true gathering.

Scott Lloyd Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 (edited) And there you have it folks direct from Correlation to the members.I make no apology for using priesthood-correlated material when my intent is to convey an authoritative Church position. Should I?Do you agree with Brightpath that "the only true gathering" of Israel will not begin to transpire until after the City of Enoch materializes and the restoration of the 10 tribes occurs at Christ's Second Coming? If so, perhaps you can help him/her with my CFR.But be advised it is authoritative Church teaching I'm interested in, not private ruminations. Edited August 12, 2013 by Scott Lloyd 1

Scott Lloyd Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 (edited) Who am I to contradict correlation, even GAs tremble in fear.Actually, the much-maligned Correlation Committee is comprised of the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve. They control and supervise staff who work in the Correlation department of the Church. Ergo, he who would would disparage "correlation" disparages the Brethren themselves.Just thought that should be pointed out.And thus, if it's a matter of choosing between what "Correlation" says and what some anonymous personality on an Internet message board says, I will cast my lot with the prophets.
