Location Of Ten Tribes

Sometime decades ago I remember reading where some Mormon scholars sent out a poll, to determine what theory as to the location of the ten tribes was held to be the most correct by the membership. The result had been the belief that they had been absorbed by Europe and Russia. This then prompted a response from the First Presidency stating this was incorrect and the tribes were gathered in one place and knew who they were. Unfortunately, I can't find that First Presidency declaration and wonder if anyone has a cite. Also am curious as to current speculation on the subject, my own being somewhat Battlestar Galactic related.

Aren't they scattered all over the earth as per 3 Nephi 5:24-26? In a sense aren't we all scattered until we come, meaning coming back from spiritual captivity, unto Christ?

If they are in a group somewhere then I propose the center of the earth. I did watch a history channel type program wherein a researcher had found remnants of most of the ten tribes scattered around . Some were in India,some Afganistan,some Cyprus,etc.

The response makes sense because a highway is supposed to be thrown up in the midst of the deep and they are to come marching in bearing their records.

Well, I know the work that provoked it, "The House of Israel" by E.L. Whitehead 1947. Which is a delightful mixture of Scripture, history, faux history, rumor, and folklore of about the same level of credibility as some of Skousens writing but wonderfully entertaining to read. But there used to be a loose leaf addendum to it that had the questionnaire its results and then the response of the First Pres. Saying no folks you got it wrong. But I have lost that part.

Yes, Off World is the most believable theory. Less likely would be "hidden", as in a "fold" of another dimension, such that they actually occupy a section of Earth's surface "in the north countries", yet are not discernible except when they choose to be discerned....

This is interesting and completely unknown to me!

Yes, the single-most fun feature of Mormonism is its wealth of "weird tales" quality. Our cosmology is more fascinating, and our prophecies as well. I will always enjoy how Mormonism is entwined with bigger than life beliefs, what to "normal" people are no better than "bad science fiction". But then, "normal" people are largely bored and boring, having no vision or occupation beyond the physical and visceral. On the other hand, most Mormons do not know of or appreciate how strange and fun the beliefs of their religion really are....
