Hunter has not really had any anti Mormon attacks on him like every other President of the Church has. I can't seem to find some statement he made or someone call his person into question, it's like they left him alone. I know he only served 9 months and he had that Cody Judy character situation but why has he escaped from it all?

It would be a stretch to say he did much at all due to those debilitating health issues he faced.

Just seems curious to me

Freedom Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 I had an opportunity to meet him when he was president of the quorum of the 12. I don't recall how long we chatted, i was up on the stand and it was between meetings. He was the embodiment of peace and gentleness. 2

Damien the Leper Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 Pres. Hunter stood out from the crowd uniquely from the other 14 general authorities. A rebel of sorts in his own right. I would have loved for him to be president for 15 years or more.

Hunter was not a divisive personality, rather he was a consensus builder, both as a member of the 12 and later during his short time as prez. If there was one theme to his talks during his tenure as prez IIRC it was that we, members of the church, should treat each other with more kindness and tolerance. IIRC, this followed (among other things) the "Sept 6".

I fully support your standard of not criticizing in that kind of thing if one doesn't have documentation of some sort. It is a very fair and compassionate approach.

President Benson had been an outspoken apostle on many polarizing subjects. President Kimball had taken a very hard stand against immorality. President Lee was (from what I heard) the strongest supporter of the correlation movement (a polarizing issue) and didn't have the greatest record on the race issue. Joseph Fielding Smith had decades as an outspoken and conservative apostle. David O. McKay was liked by everyone, especially Cecil B. DeMille.President Hunter was probably the most "even" Prophet of the bunch for many decades. Not much to criticize at all.

There was some kind of a reception and Elder Hunter was there and I was introduced to him. Because of who my father was I'd been around GAs all of my life, but this was my first time meeting Elder Hunter. I said that this particular time in my life was the beginning of a "slide", and this is true; in fact that night I'd been out doing some things I should not have been doing, and so I was a little hesitant when an acquaintance said, "Here. Let me introduce you to Elder Hunter." To this day, imprinted on my memory, is the way Elder Hunter looked at me--specifically the look in his eyes and the way he regarded me, took my measure. With the knowledge of what I'd been out doing only minutes earlier, I felt like a worm--but he seemed to regard me differently. It is hard to describe. If I had to put it into words, I would say he looked at me with a measure of love and respect I'd never felt from anyone before, not even those nearest and dearest.Anyway, to this day I've never forgotten that brief encounter, and this is one of the reasons why I do now and have always held Howard W. Hunter in very high regard. 6

The news guy asked why I had an umbrella up while sitting in the crowd...I told him I was already a redneck and did not want to make it worse; It Was HOT! He laughed and said, "I've got to talk to you"!

I just meant to say that I'd met several GAs when I was a kid and later a young adult and so was never awed to be in their presence, but Elder Hunter really made an impression on me.
