Nathair/|\ Posted November 18, 2012 Posted November 18, 2012 The commandment to Love One Another is to take much higher priority than any other commandment or doctrine, and applies to everyone that you come into contact with. Love is the Law, Love under Will. (Internet cookies to anyone who can tell me who said that.)
Kenngo1969 Posted November 18, 2012 Posted November 18, 2012 That may be all for now. There may be more later.Oh. In that case, I'll wait, all aquiver, on the edge of my seat, with 'bated breath!
peteolcott Posted November 18, 2012 Author Posted November 18, 2012 Then that prompts the question, why do you (I assume, since you are the one who started the topic) feel that consensus is lacking regarding the preeminence of loving God and loving one another among those who participate on this board in the first place. It's akin to my attempting to build "consensus" regarding the statement, "The sky is blue." The proposition isn't particularly the subject of discussion or debate; it's simply a given. We believe the Holy Bible, in which those Great Commandments are recorded. We believe that the Savior repeated those Great Commandments to the inhabitants of the New World and that they were also recorded in the Book of Mormon. We teach and testify of those Great Commandments in our talks and lessons. We sing of them in our hymns. Yes, like other fallible humans, we all have times in which we could do a better job "walking it like we talk it" regarding the Great Commandments. But even this last concession isn't particularly controversial. It, too, is a given. So my questions remain. As I said, I wait, all aquiver, on the edge of my seat, with 'bated breath, for further illumination. After very many years of pondering and prayer it seems to me that:when this single doctrine is applied correctly, it will begin the process that will end with Ephesians 1:10.http://bible.cc/ephesians/1-10.htm

The guy who said that, quite honestly, squicks me out entirely, but he did say that and "every man and woman is a Star" both of which I find incredibly ennobling. Mr. Do As Thou Wilt?Got it. 1

I call him a lawyer guy based on the title of the book you quoted from.
DH Posted November 19, 2012 Posted November 19, 2012 (edited) Who could or who would?God.Let's not confuse loving someone with approving of their actions.Having said that, I'm not nearly as good a person as God is, and would have great difficulty loving those people. Edited November 19, 2012 by DH

Nathair/|\ Posted November 19, 2012 Posted November 19, 2012 That lawyer guy with the initials of AC. I call him a lawyer guy based on the title of the book you quoted from. You got it. I should point out that even though I think he was a bad guy, he did know his stuff. He'd also probably be laughing uproariously at some of the ways we've referred to him in this thread, especially the head of lettuce joke.

peteolcott Posted November 19, 2012 Author Posted November 19, 2012 Nope, it was the second great commandment according to the Savior. If love God is the greatest commandment, and the way to express love to God is to Love one another, then Love one another becomes the greatest commandment.

The Nehor Posted November 19, 2012 Posted November 19, 2012 If love God is the greatest commandment, and the way to express love to God is to Love one another, then Love one another becomes the greatest commandment. That is only one way to express love for God and not the most important. The most important way is to follow the first law of heaven which is obedience. "If ye love me keep my commandments" and all that. 2
CV75 Posted November 19, 2012 Posted November 19, 2012 The commandment to Love One Another is to take much higher priority than any other commandment or doctrine, and applies to everyone that you come into contact with.It depends on who is commanding it, what is meant by it, and what other commandments or doctrines the recipeint posseses from the same or other sources.

azisbest Posted November 20, 2012 Posted November 20, 2012 Isn't loving God with all of our might, mind, and strength the highest priority commandment? As an outsider this topic is a curious thing to me. Is there an official rating system for the commandments, a pecking order? I thought they were things God commanded you to do. And aren't commands supposed to be followed without question? The desire to rank them would seem to be, I don't know, at least a littlle offputting to the God that gave them.

The greatest commandment is to love God with everything you have. The second is to love your neighbor as you do yourself. The intended effect was to show that all commandments fall under one (or both) of these two commandments. Sentiments like the OP go too far. The truth is Jesus was disarming a heckler and not focused on communicating truth in the best way possible. Both commandments are quotations from the Torah.Sins generally do not rank that well either. The worst is denying the Holy Ghost completely. The next rank have to do with regulating how God's children get into the world and out of it (sex and murder). Beyond that there is really no ranking despite what some gossips imagine as they damn themselves. 1
