The name is taken from a poisonous snake that is common in Europe and whose name had generally been applied to various venemous creatures. The fiends who so mistreated the Saints in the early days would certainly qualify as "a generation of vipers" under this definition. 1

Rattlesnakes in their various forms are pit vipers, so called because of the heat sensing pits between the eye and the nostril. They are indeed dangerous and not to be trusted. 1
