Calm Posted September 16, 2012 Posted September 16, 2012 I haven't read the thread, but if you think about it there is a rite and it is taught in the temple. But of course I won't discuss it.True.
mfbukowski Posted September 16, 2012 Posted September 16, 2012 (edited) I have used the priesthood to disposess.Likewise, with the simple formula taught in the temple.Edit:Snip - said more than I wanted to Edited September 16, 2012 by mfbukowski
Jude2 Posted September 16, 2012 Posted September 16, 2012 Likewise, with the simple formula taught in the temple.Edit:could I as a woman sealed to my husband do the same thing but add in those few words needed to indicate it wasn't by my power ?
mfbukowski Posted September 16, 2012 Posted September 16, 2012 could I as a woman sealed to my husband do the same thing but add in those few words needed to indicate it wasn't by my power ?If you follow the temple formula, it doesn't cite any priesthood that I recall. My answer off the top of my head is "absolutely- why not?"Unless someone shows I am wrong- but remember what Eliza Snow was able to do with no priesthood. A prayer of faith is all that is required to do many many things and sisters, I am convinced share in the priesthood of their husbands- I know some will debate it, but I won't.It's just plain true. Sealed men and women are one before the Lord- one flesh. 1
mfbukowski Posted September 16, 2012 Posted September 16, 2012 And I have heard those words from more than one Temple President- so who am I go argue?
Carborendum Posted September 16, 2012 Posted September 16, 2012 Someone I know gave a blessing to a person to cast one out. . .I have difficulty believing such a story with this as its header. This specific story has several "tells" that to me sound like an urban legend. Not to criticize MM personally. But the story just doesn't sound right.
Carborendum Posted September 16, 2012 Posted September 16, 2012 could I as a woman sealed to my husband do the same thing but add in those few words needed to indicate it wasn't by my power ?As Bukowski said, a prayer of faith.I was almost taken over twice in the summer leading up to my mission. If you read Joseph Smith's description prior to the first vision, it was exactly like that. So, I naturally thought of his words,"exerting all my powers to call upon God to deliver me..."I prayed very deeply and mightily. I was delivered.
Carborendum Posted September 16, 2012 Posted September 16, 2012 (edited) A young lady asked my dad at seminary what one should do in this kind of situation and this is what he told her to do (raise the arm to the square and command the demon to depart in the name of Jesus Christ). A little while later she along with her sisters were about to be assaulted by a gang (this was in San Francisco) and she stood and did exactly this and they ran away. She credits my dad with saving her because of his teaching. Now what actually caused them to run away, no one can really tell, it could have been simply shame; but my family has always found the story very interesting. This reminds me of the story of the lady that was being attacked in her own home (botched robbery). She began reciting scriptures. The man calmed down. He apologized, and left. This was in the news just a few months ago. Does anyone else remember that? Edited September 16, 2012 by Carborendum
Carborendum Posted September 16, 2012 Posted September 16, 2012 (edited) We don’t talk about this much do we.This is a little off topic; Can sin cause mental illness or is it the other way around?I’m struggling with really forgiving someone who caused a lot of pain in my life. She seems evil to me, when ever I see her my skin crawls like there is something evil in the room.I’ve conclude that she is mentally ill and I will stay my distance until we see each other on the resurrection day then I can be sure she has been healed.I happen to be holding an internet dialogue with a young gal across the country that seems to be suffering from "a little of both".You have to understand that demons are weaker than us. So, they prey on those already weakened. This girl has issues. I'm trying to straighten out some of her thinking. But each time I get to a new point of discussion, she immediatly goes off on a million other things that make NO sense. When I finally thought I was making headway and she was beginning to have some clarity, something majorly bad happened in her life. She's really trying to maintain control. And she mentions the "spirits" that have visited her as sources of wisdom. She just doesn't realize that they are demons trying to manipulate her. I believe this to be the initial stages of possession in her case. She is being controlled, but just not a direct "puppet" type. No, this isn't me mischaracterizing anything she's said or done. I can't go into the full detail. But I feel like there isn't much I can do from several states away. So, I talk to her. I try to expose her to the Spirit of God as much as I can. It is simply using the name of Jesus Christ in faith, along with the authority of Christ's priesthood.

Stargazer Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 Debatable, but unfortunately not here.Probably, and I do believe I am wrong about the use of priesthood authority. So, I guess I better visit the temple soon and refresh my memory.

Not to criticize MM personally. But the story just doesn't sound right. You need to be a little less cynical. It is not uncommon for those involved in highly spiritual events to edit out their involvement by putting their description into the third person. Like Paul the Apostle did when he wrote that he had known a man a number of years previously who had been caught up into the third heaven. It is generally agreed that he was speaking of himself in the 3rd person. And in this case the "tell" in the last paragraph, where MM forgets to use the 3rd person, and inadvertantly reveals that he was the junior companion in the story, and was thus present:When the senior companion was asked why he was not unnerved by all this he said that he had experienced these sorts of things before. There was no ceremony or actual rite involved. Not that I saw, at any rate. Edited September 17, 2012 by Stargazer

Carborendum Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 Sounds like an urban legend. Yeah, I know. That's why I had to add the line about it coming from the actual news...Here, I found a link.http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2096655/Woman-wards-attacker-reading-Bible--AFTER-slashed-throat.html
Carborendum Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 You need to be a little less cynical. It seems to have served me well in the past.If MM wants to clarify it, then I'll redact that statement. Otherwise, I stand by it (and my cynicism)

The Nehor Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 Yeah, I know. RobertAC Posted September 17, 2012 Posted September 17, 2012 This is a really, REALLY interesting topic. I have friends and acquaintences, both cleric and lay people, who handle exorcisms and deliverances. About a year ago, we were discussing different religious beliefs and practices. The subject of Mormon beliefs in exorcisms came up, and there was silence. No one was sure what the beliefs/practices were.
Carborendum Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 Did you read my entire post? I provided evidence that he was talking about a personal experience in the 3rd person and was a participant in the event he described.Yes, I read it. And I saw it as an interpretation. Possibly even valid. Not necessarily fact. I'm leaving myself open for correction by the author. But I don't see a need to consider myself corrected at this moment.
Carborendum Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 The Daily Mail is about as reliable as the Onion.I suppose it wouldn't mean much to say I originally read it on Yahoo News?
ed2276 Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 could I as a woman sealed to my husband do the same thing but add in those few words needed to indicate it wasn't by my power ?Yes, you could. Among the signs of those who believe in Christ listed in Mark 16:17 is that believers can cast out devils in the Lord's name. There is no gender limitation. As a believer in Christ, you can cast out demons in the name of Jesus Christ. You don't need to add any words negating "your" power. All power comes from God, even priesthood power/authority. Priesthood holders do not cast out demons by their own power. You, as a woman, need only say, " I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to depart." and that would be sufficient. You wouldn't need to say something like, " I command you in the name of Jesus Christ, though I do not hold the priesthood, to depart."

My only personal experienced with something like it was in high school. One of my friends was tormented by the menacing spirit of his grandfather, who had murdered his grandmother in his presence years before. As he was talking about the incident, I felt a cold chill in the room. Mike said, "He is here." I was a bit scared to tell the truth, but I told Mike to rebuke the spirit by the authority of the priesthood he held and in the name of Jesus Christ. Mike did so. Immediately, I felt the coldness leave the room.I believe Joseph Smith wrote about an increase in demonic possessions and false spirits appearing among the saints around the time the Kirtland temple was being built. I don't remember the source for that. Maybe someone has a better recollection than I do.

I can’t explain it I just know I felt frightened. I used those words and whatever it was left. I was left wondering if it was a real person coming into our house or a spirit.

But he did eventually go back and fulfill his mission and serve honorably.
