Church Endowment Ceremony

Doesn't youtube take down possibly illegal videos if they are asked to?

Yes. But there is a procedure. As I understand it if it is challenged the person who put the video up has to give his or her name to fend off the challenge.

I think it was this same guy that said he has video of Mitt Romney in the temple and that it will be released in September, this month.

So if it shows Mitt's face wouldn't Mitt be able to sue or have the guy arrested? But I highly doubt he has the footage.

What does this mean to me? The Endowment is a very personal experience that is undertaken with others; however, the entire experience remains very personal. It is disappointing that there are individuals that are so calloused and brazen that they would record such an ordinance, but this is a problem for the individual and God and really has no impact on me.

I recently attended a Muslim wedding at a mosque in Cairo. Prior to the groom talking with the imam, it was Asr prayer and I had the opportunity to observe the men line up for prayer. It was quite impressive and humbling. Afterward, the imam called the groom and his family to him. The imam talked to the groom and his family and the obligations of a husband and the importance of the family to support this man in his commitment to his wife. Close to the end of this short period the groom began to sign papers and the bride came out to observe his signing. I had left my camera in car, but there were a few that took pictures at this time. The groom's brother asked if I wanted my camera, but I just did not feel comfortable taking pictures in a mosque during such a solemn event.

Some people feel comfortable taking pictures of events regardless of their solemnity; others feel quite uncomfortable. I have had friends who have felt it was quite acceptable to take pictures in a delivery room; something that I abhor as crass to the extreme. I think there is a common decency that should prevent some actions. However, to covenant to keep some things sacred and then blatantly break those covenants to satisfy some prurient sense of....I don't know what motivates such an individual. This is just sad for the individual, but still does not impact my temple attendance or commitments.

I think that there is a lesson here. No matter how we may feel about the lds church now or in the future we do not become like this individual or other individuals who spend their days on the internet mocking, bashing or hating the lds church. That would be a waste of a human life. Much better to celebrate the birds and the butterflies.

I'm reminded of the story of an apostate bragging to a Mission President that he had obtained a fraudulent recommend and had gone through the temple. After crowing about how he knew all the secrets he asked, "What are you going to do about it?"

"Nothing. You have now covenanted with God to do things you don't understand and God expects you to be obedient. Good luck."

If we are not willing to do the ceremony in public there is a problem. The problem is either with the ceremony or us.

Uh, no. There are a lot of things I don't want to do in public. When I sing to my wife it is none of the public's business and it is appropriate to be kept private. What a simply ridiculous position that could only belong in a society that thinks it is appropriate to have a Twitter account to tell everyone what you are doing at every moment; a facebook account for the same thing. Some of our citizens have development a distorted sense of privacy.

There is nothing that LDS do in the temple that have not been known for over a hundred years. Attempting to portray it as secret is at best disingenuous. When I seek the divine and the spiritual, I don't need or want your attention and I could not care less about your desire to observe me or others.

Or mormons have a ceremony that they consider to be sacred and not to be shared with the general public. Maybe the temple doors should be open to all...tourists...interested people...and all can take part in the ceremonies. Would that be better?

Replace the word "ceremony" with "sex". See the problem there.

We don't do the ceremony in public because God told us not to. You can go talk to Him about that if that bothers you.

Yes, we could throw the doors of the temple open, and let "the public" wander through in their shorts and halter tops, carrying their food and drinks, sitting in the Celestial Room with their feet up because it's relaxing... they could take the empty seats in an endowment room and watch us as we make sacred covenants with God, smirking and giggling at how serious we are we silly Mormons... yes, come one, come all... wander through the temple anytime you want... and don't forget to go to the sealing rooms because there's seating in there so that the sealings of families can be observed... bring the popcorn because it's so entertaining.

You are right GG. And that was my point to the poster. It is sacred to the mormons involved. And the reasons for it is not because it is weird but because it is sacred. Now the comments under the video are mocking and disrespectful from the people viewing it. Why mock that which is sacred to some.

How about someone who views it with out any idea what it means to the Church? No problem on his/her part correct?

For someone with no knowledge about the Endowment, there is no impact. The Endowment is an opportunity to make personal covenants between the individual and God. For someone to overhear those covenants being made it is similar to eavesdropping, but nothing more.

I see no difference in this and those that host or put the wording of the Endowment on the web. Anyone can read it, but for those who may one day enter into those covenants, it is best to ignore those sites and just attend the temple when able.

As a LDS I find the mere fact that others can read about the Endowment disappointing; not because a non-member can read it, but by those who post or share things I hold sacred so freely. The fact that someone knows the covenants I have made with God does not belittle the significance of those covenants. In some ways, it may help them to understand why I hold them sacred, why I wear the temple garment, and why I try to follow Christ.

We cannot control the actions of wayward members or those who really cannot be trusted; they are to be pitied. There will come a day when they will hear the refrain, "Depart from me; I never knew ye"; their reward is sure unless they repent. How joyous the day when they can comprehend the gravity of their actions and receive forgiveness of their sins. May we all recommit to follow Christ more fully each time we see or hear another fail.

And unfortunately often with overhearing something you don't catch the whole context and meaning. Wuthering Heights comes to mind when Heathcliff overhears Cathy saying marrying someone like him would degrade her but he failed to stay for the rest which speaks of her love for him and how she could never give him up.

What is so disturbing is when someone shows this without the context of actually being in the Temple and with the Spirit it is subject to mockery and making jokes about people who believe. This is a hindrance to those people wanting to learn more and those who break such covenants will be accountable for the consequences.

I just hope nobody is embarassed of the ceremony. That is what I was getting at. Are we offended because he violated covenants with God or because our non-member friends might see?

Why would any believer be embarrassed. The problem is seeing it out of context and not understanding and therefore mocking that which is sacred.

I want all of my friends and family to go to the temple. Just when they are prepared to understand the symbolism and connection with the atonement.

The problem comes with the public mocking of the ceremony as they are doing when they comment about it. People can mock that which they don't understand.

On a different forum I just posted a video of Jews praying. They are rocking back and forth as they read a holy book and they are wearing special cloths for the ceremony. For us outsiders it does look strange. But I wouldn't mock them nor bash them and of course the people mocking the mormon temple ceremony will probably not do it either. The wrong connotations can be made if they do so. At the moment it is perfectly okay to mock and bash mormons for their difference.

And this is the problem with the video. There is no understanding behind it. just people mocking it. And bashing it. Which is why the temple recommend holder put it on the web I suppose.

The video took place in the Jordon River Temple. If anyone goes to that temple please inform the temple workers about the video. I got the information from the person who posted the video. It was in the comments section.

I have siblings that will look at me in a whole different light now, if they see this. I wonder if the church will come out with a statement.

They will not look at your any differently if you begin to explain it to them. All religions have their strangeness. But if explained properly, all will be well.

If they are they should be ashamed.

I emailed someone at Church HQ but I don't know if it will go anywhere or if I even contacted the right person but we will see I guess

I have a confession to make... No i didn't take that video. Before I was endowed I looked up everything I could find about the temple. I was obsessed with curiosity about what the temple was all about. We hold it so sacred (which it is) but for those who have never been and new members its hard to understand why. All official references to the temple are very vague. The initiated might understand the references made in sacrament and GC talks. The uninitiated only knows two things: 1. the temple is sacred and not talked about much; 2. the temple is where Baptisms for the dead, sealings, and endowments take place. If you are born into the church you might know a little more but not much. While I hate the demeaning tone the anti websites take in regards to the temple, I do feel that we could talk more about elements of the temple than we do. Sure, there are certain part that we promise not to reveal. But, there is so much more we could talk about. I didn't learn much about the temple from the anti sites (the "funny" clothes, and things we aren't supposed to reveal, thats about it) but the good sites were a treasure trove of knowledge. Bryce Haymond's cite is wonderful, and there are others too. It is from those sites that I feel prepared me to look beyond the outward elements of the temple and really understand the true meaning (as much as one can know the full true meaning) or to look deeper into the temple.
