Freedom Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 I stumbled upon the upcoming fall lineup for NBC and was disappointed, but not surprised, to find a complete lack of African Americans, Hispanics, Chinese or Middle Eastern nationalities. Virtually every program has a white male in the leading role with a token African American. I could not spot any Hispanics other then young women in a sexual pose. It seems to me that there were more non-whites on tv in the 70s and 80's than there is today. And these are the same people who attach the church for racism and bigotry. Yet nobody seems to care. I would love to see a show about a Cuban or Mexican American family. I was interested in other perspectives of patent hypocracy concerning bigotry. We seem to be accused of it by the very people who benefit from it.

And NCIS LA has a black co star (who speaks fluent middle eastern languages (CBS and I don't know if it was renewed).

I would take from your observation that white people tend to watch network TV and favor pro-gay programming messages.I've actually heard that the major networks have started partnering with Hispanic outlets for incorporating more news of Hispanic interst / perspective. I don't know if this is on their traditional network or cable outlets. Maybe that's "just a political move" but politics have everything to do with the economy. Splitting the population along media lines makes it easier to sell stuff including a political message.

Little Orphan Annie is a pale white girl with red hair and freckles, yet apparently that is such a horrible idea, Will Smith is putting his African-American daughter in the icon's place. Is that because he despises cute redheaded girls?

My point is that holywood actors get up in arms over racial issues but make little effort to incorporate them into their productions.

That certainly made a lot of sense to me.

It is a common theme. They cannot accuse others of being racist and yet fill their productions with racial and sexual stereotypes. I am pointing out the hypocrisy, not claiming racism, .

I am suggesting that a movie set in New Orleans have at least a few black people in the cast and among the extras considering most of the population there is african american. If you are going to cry about ethnic diversity, then walk the walk.

If not about "racism", simply about authenticity.They are not being overtly racist, but more concerned about money than reality and inclusion. I doubt the viewers of the 1960's viewed the depiction of African Americans and Chinese in their programming as racist but we do today. Hopefully, as a society, we will look back at tv today and be somewhat ashamed. Of course, the programming of the future will have a lot more shameful content.Regardless, those who throw stones should not live in glass houses.

Most people spheres remain within their own race so it is expected that one would look and see and depict the world as one views their own circles. Happy over here writes fictional characters that probably look largely white. I depict people in my art that are all over the map and often ethnically ambiguous (runs parallel with my circle of friends).Inside or outside the church, issues of race are about the same.
